So this is tough to watch. I give a lot of credit to this social worker for being interviewed live.

I very clearly remember all these headline cases, and all I think is, it never stops. Bella Edwards was killed less than a block from where I live. Myself and the whole neighborhood are sick. Rest in peace beautiful girl.

I thought to share it in case there's anyone who feels they may need help or know someone who needs help. Please get help or help someone before this happens again.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Bella Edwards... rest in peace sweet girl. I work in the courthouse where the hearing against him took place the other day. I read the petition of abuse against her killer, it made me feel physically ill to know what he did to her. I had to stay away from that courtroom.. I didn't want to even be near that level of evil.
Working in an abuse/neglect part, sadly there are enough cases to fill up the calendar in multiple courtrooms every single day in every county. It's sad & sickening. And so many times preventable. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Ugh the Bella Edwards case is killing me. One of my staff I supervised is the girls Aunt and she’s been out since this happened. I can’t even. It’s so sick to think all the abuse that occurs makes me want to puke

I cant bring myself to watch this.

These stories just break my heart and at the same time make me so enraged. The story of 4 yr old Myles Dobson from a few yrs ago is one I will never forget.

I had to google Bella Edwards, so sad and sick. WTF is wrong with people? And then I read this....Bella’ biological father, Kellon Edwards, said he found out about his daughter’s murder via Facebook, according to The New York Post. Imagine?!

I was on a grand jury many years ago and to hear the levels of abuse that monsters inflict on children made me want to vomit. The medical examiner going through the gruesome details was almost too much and most of the time it was at the hands of caretakers that this was happening.

Why would a mother leave her child with a man that had his history? Why? The police were there for domestic abuse previously. That mother failed to protect her child from that monster. Monsters walk all around us and they look like everyone else but as a mother, we should never turn our back to our children.

I worked for 5 years in Childrens Services and stopped when I couldn't sleep or watch the news anymore. I worked in an agency on B111th street.

Yes, right on the boardwalk which was a huge bonus. I have agree with some that say ACS is a huge part of the problem and I agree. Unfortunately the pay doesn't bring in the best quality of workers to choose from. Our country's system to protect and house misplaced or removed children is broken.

It's not necessarily the quality of workers. It's a mind numbing job with a high burnout rate. There are also laws that prevent cps from taking action in certain situation their hands are tied. Sometimes there isnt enough credible evidence to remove a child from the home. Sometimes children are removed that shouldn't be. In this case of Bella Edwards there wasn't even an ACS case. ACS can't just go removing children if there's no cps report and no case. The police had been to that home for DV and the police didn't make a report which means either they did not see any evidence of child abuse, or if they did they failed tp report it as required under the law. Police, medical and mental health professionals, and school staff are all mandated by law to make a report to child services when given information or witnessing something that may indicate a child is neglected, abused, or maltreated. If this child wasn't in school, or her mom didn't take her to the doctor, there may have been no community oversight over this child. When something like this happens, everyone is quick to blame the caseworkers when the fact is there is no crystal ball that allows the prediction of human behavior.

I don't mean this snarky, but have you worked with ACS directly? I had one ACS worker tell me it wasn't abuse this child was suffering because the extension cord used to beat the child didn't leave a lasting mark.
I sat in a court room for 2 years with siblings waiting for the termination of parental rights to which the parents didn't even show up for - so they could be adopted by their long term foster parents - and have the ACS worker fight for the parents rights to remain intact.
I have placed a 3 year old child with 1st degree burns over 35% of his body from a scolding bath placed even though CPS had been called numerous times over the parent drugging the child and neglecting this same child by strapping him in a car seat.
I had to to leave 2 children with unsupervised visits with a mother that as sexually abusing them.

These are just some of the cases that come to my mind over 10 years after I left the field.

ACS workers have to go in to the worst parts of the city and deal with people that hate them and they make 35-45K a year? It's not mind numbing in the least...it's an heart breaking job. Nothing that happens to children surprises me because I have seen it all. They have too many cases and not enough time. There is no support or outlet. You put yourself in constant danger. ACS is not getting the cream of the crop. Does that mean all of them a sub par - absolutely not but the job doesn't draw in the best.

Regardless of there being an open case or not; the abuse is never unknown. Someone always knows. Bella had old bruising and scarring from prior abuse...her mother knew, neighbors heard but no one got involved.
