When someone passes away and hadn't filed w IRS?
My mom passed away unexpectedly ten days ago. I filed her extension for this year, but she never filed last year- I filed an extension for her last year too and assumed she'd gotten it done (I don't live nearby) but she didn't- I want and need to get this resolved and I have no idea where to begin.
I don't even know what kind of statements, etc, she'd have gotten as she was just getting my dad's pension. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

I'm sorry for your loss.
If you filed an extension last year and she owed money, then you would have paid. If you didn't pay enough (or at all last year) then you will have penalties. You will still be responsible for filing last year's return. You'll have to figure out her finances to file for this year (and next year) anyway. I'd find a CPA and start there.

First of all, so sorry for your loss! I would start with a copy of last year's returns - it'll show you if she typically received dividends, interest, what income she was filing etc. Might give you a good starting point.

I am sorry for your loss. My Mom passed away this past June so I am in the same boat, as I am the Executor of the Estate.
I sent my accountant her last tax return and any mail I got that was in reference to income, Social Security, etc.. and he was able to file based on that.

I am very sorry for your loss. Make an appointment with a CPA and file an extension for 2017 taxes.

First, I am so very sorry for your loss.
It's hard to determine what you need since everyone's is so different.
Do you have a copy of her 2015 return? If so, you can see from there what she reported and hopefully find all the info for 2016 and 2017.
You can try to contact the IRS to get a transcript of what was reported to them from banks, social security, etc. and use that information to file.

I'm so sorry for your loss, it's so tough losing your mom. Are you the executor of her estate? If you have retained a lawyer, definitely ask them.

If you have power of attorney, I believe you are able to do it. My mom passed away almost a month ago, and while they did file, she passed before she was able to sign. My dad was able to sign as power of attorney.
