Old Pilgrim Psych building
So I thought some of you might find this entertaining. Im from Queens and never drive into Suffolk for anything other than visiting family. A friend of mine suggested we go to SkyZone for open play. I agreed even though it is quite the drive to Deer Park. I put the address into Waze and just went. Well -- waze had me all over the place, Meadowbrook, LIE, Northern State, Sagikos. I was highway jumping. Then it takes me off an exit for a psych hospital. I didnt really think much of it until the roads werent really roads and there were acres of demolished buildings, and then a bunch of old buildings in a crumbled state. It looked like something out of a horror movie. I was panicking thinking i put the wrong address into waze and i was going to end up in a ditch with my 2 kids. Luckily I made my way out, but I was shocked to later find out from friends that it is known that this is the old psych hospital and it just was never torn down. The fact that all those roads are still open to the public is beyond me. I had no idea driving around that huge building what would be on the other side. It was terrifying. Is this something everyone on LI just knows about and avoids? I will never put an address into waze willy nilly again

Yes and there is another one too- Kings Park Psychiatric. Not sure if they tore all those down yet.
It's definitely creepy and scary.
I guess back in the day, Long Island was considered the place you ship all the mentally ill out to.

Brentwood
Pilgrim State
The one in Kings Park is even creepier IMO but not sure how much has been torn down by now. If you google, you will find tons of urban explorer's videos and pics. It's sick!
Kings Park

HA! Now i know why there are so many crazies on the island. Their great grandparents were released from these hospitals when they closed. LOL

LOL Well remember the term "Funny Farm"? It pretty much comes from how they'd ship people out to the "country" or the "farm" thinking that getting away from the cities would help their mental state. And back then, LI was pretty much all farms and as country as you could get!

Re: Old Pilgrim Psych building
My GPS had me go through there at night to get to a gymnastic meet and it was spooky. Some of the roads are just slightly better then a dirt road. Very spooky.

Re: Old Pilgrim Psych building
funny, over the break I drove there with my son and wanted to explore! I don't think its creepy, I think its cool and unique !
He was super into it, and wanted to figure out how to get into the buildings! (we won't go in, I don't think the structures are safe)
We are going back to explore more and take pictures when it isn't freezing...

Re: Old Pilgrim Psych building
For those looking to explore, just a heads up that pilgrim state still has active patients on premises.. so just be careful to not interrupt them. There is also usually security there for that reason but I used to explorer in highschool and we always just told the guard we were "lost" and be on our way. LOL.

Yes, there is still a hospital there but it seems far from the old building. I didnt see one person there -- security or otherwise. It was like a ghost town. I could never go exploring over there. I was creeeeeeeeeped out!

Re: Old Pilgrim Psych building
They definitely still treat patients there so just be aware. Also, that is the site where MS-13 was leaving bodies apparently.
Waze took me through there once to go to Sky Zone. It was so weird but it was definitely a short cut!

Re: Old Pilgrim Psych building
Yeah, its not weird....just normal and everyone local knows about them. The KP one literally backed up to my parents house growing up, like buildings in their backyard on the other side of the fence. It was operational when I was growing up. Closed in 1997. KP land has been turned into a State Park and they have demolished some buildings. Not all, they are FILLED with Asbestos so removal and destruction of the buildings would be a nightmare which is why they still stand. Its always funny to me that people find them so intriguing and creepy bc it was just a total part of everyday normal life growing up, that there is nothing creepy about it. We drove through them and still do all the time as short cuts through town. I had friends who lived in homes on the grounds bc their parents were Drs there and Id go hang out at. I learned to drive on the roads in the KP center. Town hall used to be smack in the middle of the KP Psych Center. We used to cut through the Psych Center Cemetery growing up to get to middle school bc it was a shortcut and they used to lry the "non-dangerous" patients out around town during the day. There was a actually a hotline you could call to have the hospital van come get them if they were bothering the children, like sometimes theyd wander onto your street and hang around while you were trying to play kickball or something. So your parents would call and a van would show up and pick them up, LOL. There is also one in CI, next to the ducks stadium. Used to be a NYIT campus, I lived in the dorms there on campus in college which were the old patient buildings....so my life has been oddly always intertwined with our local psych centers.

You generally want to avoid driving through Brentwood at all if you can, not just Pilgrim State.

I had no idea i was even in Brentwood. I figured Waze would take me to the closest exit for Deer Park/SkyZone... not knowing this was literally in their backyard!!! So crazy.
