Student walkout on Wednesday
Are your districts planning on doing the walkout on March 14? I read that a few districts approved it but there is a lot of controversy surrounding it. Some of the parents are threatening to sue if they do it and the teachers walk out as well. But then, if hundreds of kids walk out with no supervision, that doesn’t seem right to me either. One parent went so far as to post on FB that he wants the kids to take pictures of any teacher or admin who comes out to protest or even supervise and he will name them in a lawsuit.

We haven't been notified of anything.
It seems like a really dumb idea.
Does anyone really think the politicians give a shit if anyone walks out of school for 20 min???

Apparently our district has planned an outdoor assembly at the same time the walkout is planned.
So basically the staff is supervising a planned activity, not going out for the walkout, so the kids are not outside by themselves. The students will be speaking at this assembly, it's all planned and organized.

I think it's a dumb idea. I also hope these schools ramp up security during that time. Scheduled walkout, mass crowd on the lawn, disturbed person with a gun....I dunno.

Exactly. Like everyone else, I am desperate for change. But this does nothing- except allow every psychopath in America to know exactly where a bunch of kids will be at 11 AM on Wednesday. My kids go to a Catholic school, and some of the 7th & 8th graders had hinted that they wanted to participate. The principal got wind of it and sent home an email on Thursday, saying that if any child at the school walks out, there will be serious consequences. This whole walk out makes 0 sense.

Student walkout on Wednesday
My school district has not organized anything but the student council has. Because of this, the school has had to implement a procedure to get the kids out of the building as well as contact local police to have them on the grounds. Teachers are to remain in their classrooms and continue instruction. If your entire class chooses to leave, you are to go and supervise the walk out as we have 2000 students in our building and if they all walk out, administrators will need help with crowd control. A letter was sent out to parents on Thursday specifically stating this is not a school sponsored event.

I'm a teacher and our union told us we cannot walk out. Teachers in NY can't strike, as per the Taylor law.

My school just passed out permission slips to the kids to get signed if they choose to do the walkout. Their parents must sign it if they plan on doing the walkout, and it states in the letter that teachers and administrators will be supervising it. Not sure what else they can do about it, since there will be kids who will do the walkout. Might as well send home permission slips and keep it as organized as possible

Our schools are having an activity around this, but not outdoors. They didn't want to have the entire student body outside of the school at the coordinated time. They deemed it too risky. They are allowing the kids to acknowledge what's going on, and to participate within the buildings.

It won't accomplish anything.
If anyone thinks lawmakers care about kids walking out for 20 mins, they are delusional. The parents in my district all seem to be against it and have been posting in our districts FB group that their kids have been instructed not to participate.
I think most kids would want to participate just because you get to walk out of class for 20 mins. The kids that are actually trying to make a difference are going to learn a sad lesson about how our government really doesn't give a shit. Look at the BLM movement. The protests were much longer than 20 mins and barely accomplished anything at all.

Honestly the kids are never safe because disturbed people have access to guns. What makes the walkout any different than recess, dismissal time, footballgames?

Yes, I’m sure there are kids who just want to get out of math class, but most of these kids are too young to vote, think they’re too young to be heard, and this is something they can do. Will it accomplish anything? Probably not. But I don’t think we should discourage them from trying.

I agree, dismissal time happens every day at the same time. I don't see this walk out putting a bigger target on the kids then they already would have.
Unless a deranged person figures it's a good time to shoot a bunch of people that support gun control. Who knows, I can't even begin to wrap my head around the thinking of an insane person. Maybe it does put them more at risk.

Our district as well. They will be holding forums at the JHS and HS level to discuss the events and address concerns. They will also be holding a moment of silence and reading aloud the names of the Parkland victims. They aren't doing anything at the elementary level, of course.
As for the walkout, my feeling is that no change has ever come about without someone, somewhere making noise. I don't think a walkout is stupid. I think if handled correctly it can be a really excellent teachable moment for the kids. Instead of trying to circumvent it, I think school administration should be encouraging students to use their voice and take this opportunity to teach them about peaceful protest and being heard.

I saw this and thought it was even better:
Instead of walking out...encourage students to walk up. To walk up to a kid who sits alone at lunch, and invite them to your group. walk up to kid who sits quietly in the corner of the room and sit next to them, smile and say "hi", walk up to a kid who causes disturbances in class, and ask how they are doing. Walk up to your teachers and thank them. Walk up to someone who has different views than you and get to know them. You may be surprised at how much they have in common, Build a foundation instead of casting stones. I challenge students to find 14 students and 3 adults to walk up to and say something nice in honor of those that dies n Florida.

It is an act of civil disobedience. Schools cannot punish the students if they go. However, it is a stupid idea IMO. Why tell crazies that you are going to be gathering in one area with minimal supervision. In the high school we teach in we are to neither encourage or discourage students. Nor are we allowed to go out with them. If we do, it is subject to disciplinary action. There are other activities planned during that time that encourages students to use their voices.

My district is not allowing kids to walk out, instead they are doing a minute of silence and allowing a time for students to write letters to our government urging change.
Bc my kids are in elementary school, their letters are different, they are urging children to write a letter to a classmate or teacher to pass around kindness. My DS is part of an aevidum club and goes every morning before class starts to help out in the special education room, so he has written a letter to each child in that class.. he did that at home this weekend bc he knew he wouldn’t have enough time Wednesday.
I think the walk out won’t change anything but make more work for teachers and put many in danger bc there are too many schools in each town for police officers to patrol. I pray nothing happens during that time, bc I respect that they are trying for change but I’m not sure this is the correct way.

I'm so proud of these kids who are trying their hardest to do something, anything. The Florida kids are so well-spoken and respectful, it's really heartening.

Parkland students actually changed the law. Their ambition to get things to change is inspirational. My kids are too young but i would encourage them to walk out if they were old enough.

I haven't read the responses, but I agree with this. At my age, I know it won't accomplish much, but my DS's school is participating and my DS decided to do it, as his way to express his voice that way. And to be honest, I'm proud of him, that he is aware and he wants to be heard. Initially it was only middle schoolers who were going to walk out, but a boy from elementary school asked for other grades to be able to participate. His letter was very deep and emotional and I love that kids can express themselves... even if in ways we know won't do much.
