39 police calls to his home since 2010 which resulted in visits from the police. For domestic disturbance for a mentally ill person. Domestic assault. A video of him shooting a gun in his backyard. The call into the FBI.
Sign. Sign. Sign. Sign.
YET he was still able to get guns legally!

I blame the friggen guardians!! Who the hell in there right mind allows a kid with such aggression to own a ******* ar15?!? I don’t see the government changing, if it hasn’t even attempted to change in all these years, it’s not going to, at least for the foreseeable future. But these people who were his guardians need to be held responsible, and I hope some parents sue the ever loving shit out of them. Maybe then we will have more self responsibility placed on families to actually know what type of people are living in their homes for Christ sake!

What guardians? He was 19 years old. Our lawmakers have made it okay for a 19yo to buy an AR15 and high capacity magazines. Yes, lots of people could have tried to speak up but our laws have made it very difficult to force someone mentally ill to get treatment and have made it very easy for those same people to get guns. That's a huge problem.

He was living with the people who are considered his guardians after his mom died in 2017. So while yes he was an adult and bought it, they have been quoted saying that it was in a locked cabinet in their house and this ******* had the key, but they never saw him use it, so it was fine and dandy. So I think they should be held responsible bc it was in there Home after this kid had cops called how many times and yet they thought nothing of him owning an ar15. It’s complete Bs.

I hear what youre saying. And its frustraing as f*ck! But if he purchased them legally what would the cops really be able to do? This kid slipped through so many cracks is scary.

Also there are repots he took an Uber to the school. How was he able to get all this shit into the car without the driver being suspicious?

I feel like as a New Yorker, there is not much I can do in regards to getting gun laws changed. New York already has strict gun laws and our representatives are for stricter gun control. It’s the other states, typically red states that vote for politicians that are anti-gun control. Gun owners go out and vote. Nothing will change until a majority of people in the other states go out and vote for someone that is pro-gun control.

Also I'm really shocked that an 18 year old cannot buy alcohol because their brain is not completely developed, causing poor judgement and impulse control, however they can buy a gun.

Unfortunately not all our reps are for gun control. Zeldin has an A rating from the NRA, votes to relax gun laws (including the one to mske it easier for mentally ill people to own guns), and after the massacre in Las Vegas he posted what was essentially a top 10 list of why we shouldn't try to enact gun control.

Also, supporting blue candidates outside of your area, joining postcard writing campaigns to encourage people to get out and vote, etc. There are ways we can at least try.

Yes, thank you.

There ARE things we can do.

I posted this in Hofstra's thread but check out Postcards to Voters

This is such a complicated issue. It’s interesting that they have this shooter in custody.

This seems to be a white male problem. There is some sort of disconnect there. The only thing I can think of is that gun control laws are to blame.

It takes a year or so for these shooters, as I’ve noticed in the news, for these shooters to actually go through with it. Depending on the state, you can get a license in a few months, if not shorter.

I know in Germany it can take years to build up a supply of guns. The process is rigorous. There are mental health checks and you must prove that you want the gun for a specific purpose (sports, hunting, etc.) You then have to demonstrate that you are going through the gun license process and show that you are a member of a sports club. You have to show that you can do this sport correctly and take many classes to prove that you are good at it. Then there are the theory and practical tests. I believe you also have to be a member of a shooting / hunting club for at least a year. This is also true for fishing and driving (minus the mental health checks.)

You get a license for ONE specific gun and that takes a year or two. You want another type or another of the same one— you have to go through the process again. A lot of these shooters carry multiple guns. Then you need a special license to get lots of ammunition. That takes time.

A mentally ill person wants to do something soon to end their pain or something. They aren’t going to wait years to do this (of course, you have the severely mentally ill that will do this, but that can’t be stopped.)

I really think gun control is the common denominator in this. All I know is that if I hear if a gun crime is committed here, people are shocked. Then the laws are tightened— common sense to me, really. I’m not really sure what to do about it from over here, though.
