Anyone else get the Tsunami warning?
Some of us in Suffolk just got a Tsunami warning on our phone. It was apparently just a test, but you had to open the app and open the message to see that. Moments of sheer panic!

Re: Anyone else get the Tsunami warning?
I got it, too. I figured it had to be a screw up since nothing anywhere else mentioned a tsunami, or anything that could cause it. Plus, it was an alert for my town, which is almost exactly in the center of the island. If *MY* town has to worry about a tsunami, the entire island is getting washed away!
The false alarms about major pending disasters has got to stop. There has to be more failsafes in place before sending panic messages out to everyone...

I knew it had to be a test or something, because I'm at work in Hauppauge and I only got it for my home town, which is one of the highest points on the island. But still that split second of "what do I do?" came over me. It came up on my Apple Watch first, which was just one line that read Tsunami Warning. Scary.

Re: Anyone else get the Tsunami warning?
Are Tsunamis even possible on LI? I thought it was something that happened only in the Pacific?

Was this a false alarm though or a test done on purpose?

Anyone else get the Tsunami warning?
It was a test done on purpose. But that was not on the alert screen.

It's technically possible, but since we have basically no tectonic plates in the Atlantic Ocean, the chances of one forming are very low.
There was an 18 foot tsunami around Puerto Rico in 1918.
In 1929, there was a tsunami near Newfoundland, and the wave technically hit Long Island, but not enough to cause any real damage.

Interesting. Yeah I thought it was pretty slim of a chance. Maybe that is why they chose that specific warming to do the test with- because it's the least likely to happen here so it would cause the least distress?

How could they not put “TEST” in the alert?! That is ridiculous, especially after what just happened in Hawaii.

Not really because it was a test and it said test.

That's not what I got. I got an Accuweather alert, but there was nothing in the alert about it being a test. When I went into the app, I couldn't find any more details about it.

Mine wasn’t a test version either! But I don’t live in an area that can possibly get hit by a tsunami usless the world is ending, So I figured false alarm.

I saw on the news that Accuweather sent out a test alert & a 3rd party picked it and didn't qualify it as a test.

Me too. I honestly didn't even know we could get one here and as Goldenrod pointed out earlier in this thread it would be really really rare. Kind of like if I got a warning on my phone that a volcano was about to erupt.

Re: Anyone else get the Tsunami warning?
I got no warning here, obviously. But the Mid-Atlantic rift could be something that could result in a tsunami. It would be super rare, though.

Re: Anyone else get the Tsunami warning?
I didn't get it and am now worried I didn't get the test! Years ago Iwas watchnig some science show with my husband and it was all about some mountain that could fall into the water and cause a tsunami large enough to take out most of the northeast including all of Long Island and it would be about 17 hours to arrive here ( I remember that number because it's my favorite!) It was rather detailed but I can't remember the mountain or where it was located. So, I definitely think it's possible.

There is no way everyone could get off of Long Island even with 17 hours notice. LI is a nightmare on a normal day on the LIE. Forget it, we're all dead. I'd rather not even know it was coming.

That was the primary reason that they shut down the Shoreham Nuclear Power plant. I'm not sure why they even decided to build it in the first place. I grew up in the shadow of the tower, and we all knew that if anything happened, there is almost 0 chance of leaving the island. We can't leave the island in a reasonable amount of time during standard every day rush hour!
At least with a tsunami, by heading towards the north shore, it should be pretty safe. It would take an insanely devastating wave to wash out the entire island. Anything that big would take out the entire east coast of the country.
