Anyone here have a colonial?

I have an older center hall colonial and my kitchen has just a stupid layout. We are going to gut it and start over. My kitchen is in the back of the house and my dining room is in the back right corner and my den is in the back left corner if you are standing at the front door. I'm actually thinking of blowing into my dining room and taking it over for my kitchen. Has anyone done that? Would anyone mind sharing pics of their kitchen layout? I would love to get ideas of how the kitchen flows with the dining room and the den. TIA!

Re: Anyone here have a colonial?

I’ve considered this! We have a similar layout from what you described, except the den is on he right side behind the dining room, separated by a half wall and barn door.

We thought about perhaps combining the kitchen and dining room and making the now dining room a “great room” off the kitchen. We imagined a place to hang out, do homework and projects, and still be part of the kitchen.

I’m not sure what we’ll actually do, but that’s been a brainstormed possibility.

I have a CH Colonial too but my dining room is in the front of the house. If I had your layout I would totally eliminate the dining room and have a large kitchen. Dining rooms are so antiquated. I never use mine and it's too small for a table to seat more than 8-10 anyway.

I have a center hall colonial. Our downstairs is pretty open concept, kitchen and family room (one big room) run across the whole back of the house. Dining room is on the right when you walk in the front door and separated from the kitchen by the wall that the fridge and pantry are on. All our kitchen cabinets are along the back wall of the house. We have a formal living room on the left when you walk in the front door separated from the family room by a small wall with a pretty big cased opening.

My dining room was one of the main reasons I bought my house! I wanted a large formal dining room since I host most of the holidays.

You know, I really go back and forth about this. I love the idea of having a formal dining room. The rooms in my house are on the smaller side. It's kind of weird actually. They are all long and narrow. I feel like if I open up the kitchen into the dining room, I will have so much more room that will be used. Right now, my dining room is like a museum with the exception of my DS building his legos in there. I don't know. Sometimes I think about bumping out the house like 2-3' around the entire perimeter but now that's getting into a whole lot of work.

Re: Anyone here have a colonial?

I have an older center hall colonial as well with a similar layout to what you described only my dining room is in the front left of the house. Our ultimate plan is to open the dining room up to the kitchen and completely gut and reconfigure the kitchen. Right now our kitchen is long and narrow with very little countertop space. It's hard to explain...but it's practically unusable. We're also considering blowing out the kitchen another 10 - 15' to meet up with the family room (which is on the left side of the dining room).

I have a left side colonial. Our layout is the living room in the front and the kitchen is the back. The cabinets and appliances are on the left and the table is on the right. It’s really spacious. We just bought it all redone so i don’t know if there was a dining room before. There is an extension on the right that is a den and on the left that is a bathroom laundry room. We have a dutch colonial and took down the wall between dinning room and kitchen. I was really nervous about how it would look but it came out great.

We now have a long island between our kitchen and where the kitchen table used to be. I knew I didn't want two tables next to each other but there was a big empty space otherwise. Our designer suggested the long island instead.
