Paranoid about flu

With all these daily stories coming out is anyone else really worried about the flu. Several kids have been out from my son's school each week for the last three weeks. He has not gotten sick but tonight started complaining of cough that hurts but he's not coughing much otherwise says he feels fine....he had a vaccination but can't help but be worried!

Yes I am worried. I have my kids constantly washing hands but ultimately I know there is nothing I can really do to prevent it. Except pray!

Re: Paranoid about flu

My DD had flu a few years ago. She was sick for a few days, but she was fine after.
Same with DH and I.
There's not much you can do about it other than the common sense things like hand washing, cleaning, etc. And strengthening your immune system with rest, supplements, vitamins etc.

I"m not worried. If we get flu, we get flu. It sucks to be sick but we'll get through it . I've had non flu viruses that were way worse than the one time I had flu to be honest.

Yes. I have an autoimmune disorder and I am allergic to the vaccine. I teach my students to wash their hands every time they enter a new room. The subway makes me very nervous too. I just try to practice good hygiene practices.

Re: Paranoid about flu

I work from home and the only time I’m in public is when I’m shopping or social gatherings. My hands are bleeding with the amount of washing I do. My husband works with the public and he constantly has employees out. One with flu, another with stomach bug... I make him boil himself when he comes home lol. I also make sure he Lysol’s everythings at work daily. Phones, computer, register, etc. if he brings something home, I’m moving into the guest room until he’s better. Since having reactivaTed Epstein Barr this summer, along with fibromyalgia - even a regular cold lasts way long and starts a fibro flare up. I’m still feeling the effects from a cold I got the week before Xmas. Joint swelling , dizzy - all fibromyalgia.

I cannot be sick. Way too busy with work the next 4 weeks to be that kinda sick

Re: Paranoid about flu

I’m paranoid. My son had the flu the last two years in a row. Last year, despite being vaccinated, he still got the flu so bad that the ped sent him to the ER directly from his appt (one reason I twitch when people claim the shot gives you a weaker version of the flu if you do get it...)

We practice good hygiene. Everyone in my house washes their hands as soon as they come in so we minimize the chance of bringing outside germs in. My son knows he has to wash his hands as soon as he comes home from school. We don’t go out of our way to put us in high crowd situations (my son has asked to go to the museum of natural hitory, but we’ll be reserving that trip for the spring, because he won’t have lost out by waiting 2 more months to see some dinosaur bones...)

Not sure what else we can do. I think we are in a peak right now but it’ll start to settle down in the next few weeks. That’s my prediction.

I'm so paranoid!! Probably because I'm 36 weeks pregnant too. Im home with my son all day but dd goes to school and my dh is out at work. I literally Lysol-ed the bottom of everyone's shoes yesterday Chat Icon we take our shoes off in the foyer, but it made me feel better lol. This was after doing all the doors and light switches.. I keep washing jackets and gloves. I'm driving myself nuts!

Re: Paranoid about flu

Much of my family has the flu including my 10 month old nephew who had it last week and spent 3 days in the hospital. It was awful and so freaking scary! Luckily he is home and is so much better but i barely slept last week. My daughter’s are both asthmatic and I do not want them getting it. I bleach and Lysol everything. Backpacks and lunch boxes go into my washing machine everyday. I send them to school with hand sanitizer (who knows if they actually use it). My hands are in awful shape from washing them over and over again.

One thing that really drives me crazy is people do not keep their kids home from school/daycare when they are sick. I would never think to send my kids to school sick.

If only you all could see the gallons of hand sanitizer in every room of my house, my car, my diaper bag, and my office.... my sons have both had RSV, one having it twice and both were hospitalized, I cannot deal with the flu. I haven’t been taking them places just to avoid the flu. My mom watches them while I’m working so if she’s sick in the slightest (she works as a nurse on the days she doesn’t have them) I’ll be taking off until she’s better. We didnt do a big birthday party for the kids and fought a lot of flack for it and after seeing all this flu stuff I’m glad we didn’t because our families are extremely inconsiderate when it comes to coming around the kids sick.
A Facebook group I’m on a mom posted Maryhaven school was closed and while people said it’s inconvenient, kudos to them. Those kids have special needs and some medically frail, including my neighbor who attends school there, I couldn’t imagine the flu in a medically frail child.

I wash my hands like a crazy person on a regular basis. Big time germaphobe. I got the flu. Nothing you can do to prevent it other then staying home and not coming into contact with people. It's airborne. Someone coughs, you walk through it a few seconds later you got the flu. No sense worrying about it because if you are gonna get it, you are gonna get it. Only thing you can do is try to eat health, take vitamins, excersize. Keep your immune system strong if possible

This. I had the flu over New Year’s. I washed my hands like crazy and used sanitizer whenever I had just left the house (my sister and her kids were sick and the ones who brought it in; they live upstairs). Out of the 8 people in the house, only two didn’t get sick.

I am glad I got it when I did because I didn’t want to be sick on my flight home. It was the worst feeling ever and I felt like someone beat me up.

The best thing you can do is wash hands, Lysol, bleach, but it is passed airborne as well. The person is also contagious when they aren’t even feeling sick yet. Then maybe they feel like they are getting a cold later, and then, bam, it hits.

A lot of people don’t stay home when they feel like they might be getting a cold. Sometimes it amounts to nothing.

Re: Paranoid about flu

According to a news report I saw yesterday, the flu is also passed by a person just breathing. Coughing, sneezing yes, but just breathing can cause someone else to catch it.

I was my hands like crazy, use a paper towel to open door handles. Purell hurts my skin, so I don't use it.
Soap and water, and lots of friction.

If I get it, I get it. Nothing I can do about it except quarantine myself in my house until flu season is over.

I'm a little paranoid....and we are flying to Cali next month and the thought of sitting on an airplane for 5.5 hours with possibly flu infected people in close quarters totally sets me over the edge Chat Icon

We upped our Vitamin D, take lots of C, drink lots of grape juice, and cross our fingers! I know in our school kids aren't washing their hands before lunch. I send mine with pure alcohol wipes, but there is only so much we can do!
