Vacation during the school year
I took my DD out for a cruise in K and now she’ll be out again for Disney in 1st. Her teachers were fine with it and sent her work home, so she did it on the plane. I purposely left a message for the school nurse when I called her out so I didn’t actually speak to anyone lol.

Vacation during the school year
I work in a school so it isn't a possibility for me but if I did not I would do it on a rare occasion, I would not make a habit of it or do extended vacations but assuming my kids were on track and understood their responsibility in making up the work I would do it.

Re: Vacation during the school year
We pull our kids 1x a year, usually for the week. My DH isn’t able to take time off during Christmas break, so we go on a family vacation the first week in December. We are able to use 3 day weekends for smaller trips throughout the year, but until my kids struggle or ask not to be pulled, we will continue to do the week. Currently my older 2 are in 3rd and 2nd, and the school never gives me a problem, my DS 3rd grade teacher did, not bc she thought he would get behind, but bc she was too lazy to get the stuff together (her words).

Vacation during the school year
In kindergarten, I don't think it matters at all!!!
I have pulled my 2 DD's out of school every year since they started school. One is a freshman in the honors program at University of Maryland and the other is a junior in high school and just got a PERFECT score on her SAT's!!
To me it was about all of the memories and relationships and experiences they have had that have helped to shape my girls.

Vacation during the school year
I swore I'd never do it, but we just pulled our kindergartner & 3rd grader out for 3 days the week of Thanksgiving for a cruise. It was an easier week for them because the teachers hadn't planned too much, but my 3rd grader did have a little bit of work to catch up on. My younger son's teacher didn't give him any work and just told him to enjoy his vacation - which he did. I think it's really ok when they're younger...go and have fun! :)

Re: Vacation during the school year
I wouldn't think twice about it in Kindergarten. Maybe around 3rd/4th grade I'd start trying for a shorter week- like a 3 day weekend or Thanksgiving week so they miss fewer days.

Re: Vacation during the school year
I'm sure it won't matter in the long term if you do, but I personally wouldn't. Growing up, we never did. My concern is I think it gives a message to kids that the rules don't necessarily apply to them. I don't want to normalize missing school. I don't judge people who do it though.

Vacation during the school year
I agree with everyone else. It won't be a problem, especially in Kindergarten. About the only thing I would check is when the school has their picture day. In my daughter's school, it's usually in the middle of September/October, so I wouldn't want her to miss that. But, otherwise, I say book the trip!

Vacation during the school year
I have for a day. We are going to Bermuda in April, and they will miss the last day of school before spring break. But I wouldn't do more than that. But that is what I feel is best for my family. I think most families do it, and I doubt the teachers will be annoyed.

Re: Vacation during the school year
I don’t think it would be an issue. I generally plan a trip for Election Day week. You have Election Day and Veterans Day in the same week. This year our district put to 1/2 Days in between. Maybe shoot for that week?

Re: Vacation during the school year
GO!! Do not even think twice about it. I pulled my girls out of school the 3rd week in September this year for Disney they are in 2nd and K.
Life is too short, you can make up school work, your son won't be this age forever, making memories is so important. In Kindergarten they are not learning anything in a week that is going to put him so far behind.
I'm pulling them again next year for 4 days in November for Disney again and I'm not in the least bit stressed over it.

Re: Vacation during the school year
I pulled DD from 4th grade last month to go on vacation. She missed 3 days of school. I pulled her in K and 2nd as well. Once she is in middle school, or HS I may reconsider pulling her, but at the moment, I really don't think there is any harm to her academic achievement.

Thank you so much. Believe me, we were not expecting that at all. She's a really good student but she had never (practice) tested anywhere close to that. We are thrilled.
