Christmas in NYC- for limited patience people
I would like to take DD to the city (Maybe!) this year but I can tell you right now we are not going to deal well with the crowds by the damn tree. My anxiety and limited patience prohibits that. I also always found it very anti climatic going there- you fight the massive, anxiety inducing crowds to look up and say- yeah, wow, pretty, same tree as last year. Now what?
Macy's is also OUT! Way way out.
What else can we do? Bryant Park? Anything good in Central Park? Anything more off the beaten, tourist ridden trail?

Brookfield Place in the WFC. You can look at the Oculus and make an appointment to see Santa.

Gilt has a VIP package for skating in Bryant Park right now. Tree at Met is beautiful but I wouldn't call it zen there unfortunately. In past years NY Historical Society right across the st from natural history museum has done a small train exhibit. They also have a great kids section downstairs that is never crowded. Xmas puppet show at marionette theatre and Wollman Rink in Central Park.

Re: Christmas in NYC- for limited patience people
That is the reason I am taking my DS out of school and going during the week. I know my Husband who has beyond limited patience so to make it a nice day for everyone, we are picking a week day.

I went last year during a weekday and there were no crowds (well, regular NYC crowds) and no lines. I walked the Macy's displays, to Bryant Park, public library behind Bryant Park, and to Rockefeller - zero problems.

Christmas in NYC is not good at all for people with limited patience Anywhere you go in NYC there are tons of crowds this time of year as well as tons of traffic

And THAT is why we have never gone. Ever. But DH wants to take her. As far as traffic we never ever drive in NYC even in the quietest of times. So it would be all public transport. I have to really think about if it's worth it.
Some of the suggestions on this thread though were great, so thank you all! I will look into them

So let your DH take her, deal with the insanity while you sit home and enjoy the peace and quiet with some wine

Christmas in NYC- for limited patience people
Is going during the week a possibility? This will help cut down on the number of people doing "touristy" things. Not sure if you saw that I updated my post about Macy's and Santaland after having gone this past weekend. I know that many people who went on the first weekend it was open expressed very negative experiences and long wait times, but with my reservation, I was in and out in about 30 minutes (and this was on a Saturday!) Everything was very efficient and ran smoothly. I would think mid-week, Macys Santaland would be a breeze to do, especially if you made an earlier morning reservation. Also, going sooner rather than later would help. As we get closer to Christmas, things get more hectic and the number of people increase.
Edited: I just read that you are going on the weekend. Can DD still go to a regular day of school and you go in after for a late afternoon/early evening NYC trip? The tree is much better to see anyways when its dark out and you can totally snag a Macy's reservation mid-week late afternoon. I believe they go thru 9pm.

Just don't go during SantaCon like I did my first time.
Are you wanting to see the lights (at dark when everything is lit)? If not, what about earlier in the morning (around 8 or 9am) when people are still waking up? There shouldn't be too much pedestrian traffic that early.

Re: Christmas in NYC- for limited patience people
My only advice is DO NOT GO the week between Christmas and New Year's. DO NOTTTT.
We did last year. There were lines to get into stores. LINES!! My anxiety was through the roof and I work in the city so I'm used to a certain amount of crowds.
I imagine all weekends prior to Christmas are better than that week.

Re: Christmas in NYC- for limited patience people
Santacon is this Saturday, the 9th. From the ideas above, you could very easily do Brookfield and South Street Seaport one day. Brookfield also has an ice skating rink. There is a free shuttle bus that can take you from Brookfield place to the seaport, and I don't think it is that busy on the weekends.

Re: Christmas in NYC- for limited patience people
Avoid Bryant Park unless maybe you’re there when it opens. It was so crowded it wasn’t enjoyable when we went this past Sunday. Walked in, did carousel, walked out. Or rather pushed our way in and out.

I would take her to American Girl and see the new store, and they have a cute tree. Maybe get lunch...or breakfast there. Maybe you can go early in the morning while it's still dark and see the tree lit up that way? (American Girl is behind the tree) You could see a Christmas themed show....the Rockettes, try MCDC code, or see the Nutcracker at Lincoln Center (so nice). There is a cocoa and carols cruise or something like that...I saw it as a FB event

Nell, I don't even know who you are right now.
The Plaza has tea with Santa. Probably not insanely crowded over there, even on the weekend. Can take the subway from Penn, but obviously don't get out and walk through Herald Square to the N, Q, R.

Last year someone posted that they go at like 5am and are home by 9am. We are trying this idea on the 26th because I don’t feel like battling crowds.

Lmao. I have flashes of insanity sometimes. It's funny because I was sitting on the couch with Dh less than an hour ago reading him the response about the nightmare of Bryant Park and saying....I think we should skip it totally like we do every year. So you aren't the only one doubting who the F i am!

Christmas in NYC- for limited patience people
I just took 5yo DD. Drove in on Sunday am. Was parking in a garage at 930am. Took her to American girl doll and just walked through the store. Walked to ST pats and did a lap in there and finally a lap through the LEGO store. Made an 11am show at Radio City Music Hall to see he xmas show. And then walked down the street for lunch and drove home. Was super easy, no traffic and no lines. I saw home at like 3pm.
