My mom does this, annoys the crap out of me. She does it to all of us

This! It makes me irrationally angry but I've learned as I've gotten older than she just thinks she is helping so I try to give her boundaries now although sometimes she still pushes them

IE: You're free to clean the kitchen and bathroom but leave the closet alone.

Yup! Although, my mom lives 500 miles away, and when she visits now, she has to stay with my sister, because I can't tolerate her re-organizing LOL

If someone wants to clean and organize my house for me, go ahead. Lord knows it is a mess and I have no time to do it.

I'd be livid. It's a complete invasion of privacy. I am close with my parents but I would flip my $hit if they EVER thought to go in my closets let alone organize them. Nobody touches my things, I'll organize and keep things clean as I see fit. What nerve!Chat Icon

She’s staying over in your home all week—to watch your child, I assume for free?
There is always a price for “free” babysitting. This is your price! So you can either deal with it, or find other arrangements. If your child is young and napping for a few hours she’s probably bored.

I 100000000% disagree with this. Just because someone is staying with you or helping out does NOT give them ANY right to take over your household, go through your things, and do whatever they want. That's a load of cr@p.

Her MIL should have respect for their home and personal belongings and space. Period.

Exactly. Nobody should have free reign over your personal belongings because they are doing you a favor- no matter how big that favor is.

Re: Would this piss you off?

I’d put something that she wouldn’t want to find in the closets. A sex toy catalogue, some racy lingerie, or something like that. That usually establishes some boundaries without having to say anything Chat Icon .

I remember when STBX and I started dating we were getting dressed and ex-MIL walked in. She learned from there on that there were boundaries.

And, yes, that would bother me. My closets are personal. It’s like going to someone’s place and opening up their closet and medicine cabinet. I don’t think it matters if others wouldn’t mind; it’s more about what you are comfortable with.

You could also be diplomatic and say thanks for organizing the closet, but you are particular with that and paperwork. Say I appreciate her trying to help and maybe say these are things I need help with (kitchen, dinner, etc.). Depending on your MIL, I’d probably have your DH say this.

She rearranged her sons closet (that didn’t bother him).
Replaced a ripped bag with a non ripped bag.
Ok maybe she should’ve have gone through papers but if they were laying out on the table I doubt they were highly confidential.

I don’t think any of the things she did are horrific and an insane invasion of personal privacy/space. But if the OP disagrees, then she can talk to her or return her child to daycare.

I didn't say it was horrific but rearranging a closet- well you should at least ask first.
My closet is messy but I have a system. A method to the madness and I know where everything is.
I would never go in to my sister's closet while babysitting her kids and take it upon myself to rearrange it

Her DH is wrong. Unless he's married to his mommy he should respect his WIFE'S feelings on the matter and put his mom in her place. He's not 10, his mommy shouldn't be organizing his clothes. That's ridiculous! Again, no matter who you are you should respect a person's home, things and privacy. MIL is overstepping.

My mom does this and I LOVE it and I’m so grateful! I wouldn’t care but I’m really easy going and would know it’s coming from a good place.

No. Send her to me.

ETA: Neither my mom or MIL have ever cleaned or helped me in any way, including watching my child. Ever. I'm usually the first one to say hell no to bs but this is one case where I'd keep my mouth shut and thank your lucky stars you have a MIL who wants to help.

Re: Would this piss you off?

Make her a list of stuff you wouldn't mind her help with. Tell her you appreciate her help but some things you prefer to do handle yourself. Also make list of things she can do with child.

My mom does this all the time. She won't go into my bedroom closet but she'll offer first. She never organizes anything without consulting with me too. My mom comes almost every other week and helps me with laundry, cleaning, etc. I love it, however I know my sister in law doesn't love it as much when my mom "helps." I think for some it might be different if it were their own mom.

10000% it would annoy me

i'm organized, and even if my closet was disorganized, i would HATE someone else cleaning it. I know where literally everything in my house is and if someone else were to come along and rearrange things to their own liking, or even differently than i had it, it would drive me nuts.
My mother, MIL, whomever.. doesnt' matter who it is

I know many others don't seem bothered by it, but to me that is a big invasion of privacy and overstepping boundaries. Your DH may not care, but he should care that you care. It's YOUR house, not hers. Unless you specifically ask for help, then anyone should know to keep out of it.

I don't think its worth going nuts over though, i'm sure there's a way to nicely address it - you can tell her you're super anal about the house and you'd prefer her to not do stuff like that. As others said, try to give her other things to do if she's bored!

This is my dream and I am a neat clean person. My brother was just complaining to me his MIL was doing his laundry and folding his undies and he was so pissed about it. I was like send her to me! She can fold my undies and bras and whatever else she wants!

recently my DH was away and I had to work on a Sat
my parents kindly came over to take the dogs out for a walk
my dad later that night said "mom was laughing you have a sweater in your closet of hers"
I said "what was she doing in my closet"
BUSTED for snooping!
I know this has nothing to do with your question but made me think of that day..only a few weeks ago

It would really annoy me. And idk when she does these things, but if she was doing it while she could be playing with my child, that would be even worse.
