Contributing for Class Gift
So I started getting the letters from DC's class moms about how much they are collecting, what/who it's going towards, etc. My question is: Do you contribute to the class gift? If so, do u give the teachers a separate gift also? I'm leaning towards skipping the contribution and just doing my own gifts, but I don't want to look cheap. I do love these teachers, but I'm trying to see where I can save some $ this year.

I always contribute to the class gift, and sometimes (depending on the teacher), give a little something extra just from us.

we got the call last week $20 for the class gift- I was on the fence but truthfully if I bought something on my own I am sure it would have ended up costing me more.
DS has 21 children in his class are they really going to give the teacher a $400 gift- seems INSANE to me considering she makes over $100K a year

I do and then get a small edible gift (hot cocoa was easy, cute and regiftable if the teacher didn’t use herself).

Many people don't contribute to the class gift.

I would contribute what you are comfortable with towards the class gift.
FYI $20 seems like a lot! a $400 gift card is excessive!

Is that just for one teacher??!! If so, that is kind of crazy.
I collect $20 for preschool, but that covers the lead teacher, assistant, secretaries, and special area teachers- so it actually saves the families money and they all get one larger gift instead of 20 candles

Most people don't spend more than $20 on a gift they buy which means the teacher is getting a bunck of little things she doesn't need and probably doesn't want. In NY where teachers make so much I guess $20 can be a lot but in other places OOS where teachers earn less the teachers completely deserve a $400 gift.

I agree.
And our classes generally only collect around $5 or $10 per student.
I know myself I wouldn't want a bunch of bath and body works or scarves or whatever. I'd prefer the one gift card too. Much more practical

I contribute to the class gift and don't give anything separately to the teacher(s). We only do so during 'teacher appreciation week', or at the end of the school year.

Is it just for the teacher?
We have a $10 class gift - $5 goes towards the teacher and the other $5 is split between the TA's, specials, secretaries, etc.
I usually give a little something extra to the teacher, and in K the TA (since she's there all the time and does a lot) on top of the class gift.

we do have a TA - she is there for one boy mainly but does help out- she is in the class picture. The message on my answering machine just said we are collecting $20 for the class gift - so I would think some of the money goes to the TA since she did make the school picture...
I am contributing most likely won't do anything extra
I have another question what about before care? There seems to be about 5 ladies there, we go 3 times a week- what is appropriate for that- I pay for before care it is in the school.

Contributing for Class Gift
I contribute to the class gift. When I organized gifts for my kids' teachers, I found most contributed to the group gift. I always sign the card from the class as a whole so no one is singled out.
My kids then write a note to their teacher and put it in a holiday card.
Way back when, when my kids had multiple before card/after care teachers, I'd either bring in a tray of cookies or fruit, or give each a small $ gc to Starbucks

The TA may very well be a one to one aide and not a TA. Entirely different job. And I am not being snarky, I am just saying that a TA and a one to one are different pay grades, benefits, responsibilities, expectation, etc.
My son's class has a teacher, a TA and 3 one to one aides. They are all part of the class but the one to one are there only for the assigned children. But they do participate with the entire class as they are able to.
If I was giving gifts, I would give to all 5 adults in the room but the teacher, the TA and my son's one to one would get more than the other 2, but they would not be excluded.

I agree with this if that is what they're doing. The one and ONLY one time I contributed to a class gift they bought a stupid purse for the teacher.
I think she would have preferred my gift card that I was planning on giving instead of a purse that IMHO is something you buy yourself.
From that day on I stick with doing my own thing. I'd rather pay a little more and get her a gift card than contribute to a class gift that is not.

I do the class gift and depending do something small on my own. Our contribution goes for a Christmas gift and an end of the year gift and maybe money towards crafts at a party.

I do class gift and a separate gift from us.
Usually they only collect $5 or $10 most.
I also get the teachers a Nordstrom GC and throw is those slipper socks too.
I did less when the boys were in daycare and several teachers.
DS1 has 2 teachers and Speech
DS2 only has 1 teacher to get for.

I usually donate $20 towards the class gift. However, one of my kids usually ends up with a teacher that they LOVE and insist on getting them a special gift.

This is DD's 2nd year at her school. Last year, I got gift cards for her main teacher, 3 asst's, art teacher & music teacher. It added up to a lot!
This year, we got a letter asking for each child to give $5-$10. I'll prob put $20 in an envelope and call it a day.

Contributing for Class Gift
DD goes to a private school. We contribute to the class gift. There is a "recommended" amount. Some years we have the money to give that, some years we don't. The money gets split between: classroom teacher, music teacher, art teacher, pe teacher, 2 foreign language teachers, groundskeeper, librarian, technology teacher, science teacher, front desk staff, and lunch monitor.

WOW! When I collect for the teachers, it is usually $5-$10 per person. We say you can give more or less but only request from that range. At $20 cash, you can just gift your own $20 GC or present.

we haven't gotten a letter yet this year... but last year i think they collected $10 to split up between the teacher and the TA (this was in kindergarten, and they had a full time TA in there). SO i did that, plus got each of them a gift card to Target and a thing of chocolates, too. They were AMAZING--- the teacher just went above and beyond. at the end of the year, she made each kid a personalized "yearbook" with a picture of them at Halloween, on their birthday, on the field trip, etc,etc... and this is public school, too!! HAHA
i haven't gotten the note to contribute for this year yet, but i'll probably do the same thing- contribute, and get a separate gift card on my own, too.
