Would send your child to school in this shirt?

My dd's aunt went to the same elementary school as dd, about 15 years ago, back when the mascot was a Native American. The school still has the same Native American name, but since then they have changed the mascot. Her aunt gave her a school t-shirt from her school days. It looks exactly the same as the shirts the school sells now, except for the mascot. She wants to wear it bc it was her aunt's, but should I let her? 1. It's not PC, and 2. Her classmates will probably ask her why it's a different mascot. Am I over thinking this, because I tend to do that. But I also don't want to let her wear it if it offends anyone. They changed the mascot for a valid reason.

I think I'm going to have to make the shirt "disappear" so dd can't keep asking to wear it.

No. And you can turn it into a teachable moment. Explain why the mascot was changed.

I would, but she's only 5, so I don't think she'd understand me correctly.

Ok, shirt is going away. I will just buy her one with the current mascot and hope she doesn't notice or care.

I wouldn't send her to school wearing it. I'd try to find an age appropriate way to explain to her why it's offensive and use it as a teachable moment. Something like:

I know you like the shirt because your aunt gave it to you, and it is something you should hold onto as a special gift from your aunt, but unfortunately it is not appropriate to wear to school. This may seem odd, because it's a school shirt, but when your aunt went to school people didn't realize the Native American mascot was offensive to actual Native Americans. As you know, your mascot is now a ________, which was changed because the Native American mascot was offensive to people of that culture.

I agree - I don't think it's too early to start a conversation. It might not mean a whole lot to our DD right now, but it might be something she remembers or asks about again later on

Our school mascot is still the “Indians.” The logo is now just the first letter of the town with two feathers. But I have seen some stuff with profile pictures of a Native American. I find it odd but no one else here seems to! And in school they refer to them as Native American Indians.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. I can't. "Native American Indians."

Actually I just googled it and on Wikipedia it still lists an also known as as American Indians. I think I searched for it when my son first came home saying it because it struck me as so odd but apparently it’s still pretty common.

Really?!! That's nuts. I agree with you, so odd. I don't think it's accurate terminology even if it is commonly used.

Our school mascot is a Native American...we are the "Warriors". To be honest, I actually never really thought about it until this thread. My Grandpa is of Native American descent, and while he is deceased now, I never heard him complain about anyone using the term American Indian, mascots, etc. But, I can see how it can be offensive to some.

Would send your child to school in this shirt?

I guess I am in the minority I would and see nothing wrong with it.

As a previous poster said we have the Cleveland Indians, the Washington Redskins, and a variety of other teams like that.

Same. l honestly don’t think l would have thought twice about the shirt. Both my family and DHs family has a Native American heritage ((his great grandpa lived on a reservation until he passed a few months ago)) and this was never a subject that was discussed as a problem, it was only considered a problem if the person used it in a negative way. Showing pride of their mascot l dont see as demeaning, or negative, but thanks for the PSA bc I’ll think twice from now on.

No. They changed it to a "C"

ETA: If you go to the fan shop, they do sell stuff with the C and the Indians logo.
The players hats have a C on them and the Indians logo on their jersey. Chat Icon

This was a picture from a game this summer.
When did they change it?

I do see the C on this hat, but he still has the logo on his sleeve patch:

I guess they can wear both ?
On their website, the first article shows a pitcher wearing a C on the cap.

I was actually thinking the same thing. What exactly is offensive about the use of a Native American as a mascot? What makes it different than say a Fighting Irish mascot which I've never heard anyone say was offensive. A mascot is supposed to symbolize strength and victory right? So wouldn't that be complimentary?

Are you kidding? Its incredibly offensive and puts an entire race of people on a different level - it makes them caricatures. Think about it - you are putting a race of people on the par of a Tiger or a Lion. Think about how it would be if you put any other race of people on a hat.

The Indians mascot is buffoonish and super offensive.

The fighting Irish does the same thing.
