California school shooting

http://www.wmtw.com/article/california-shooting/13601759

RANCHO TEHAMA, Calif. —
A reported shooting in northern California has left at least three people dead.

The Tehama County Sheriff's Office says the shooting happened at an elementary school in Rancho Tehama around 8:00 am. local time. Rancho Tehama is about 115 miles north of the state capital of Sacramento.

A Corning Unified School district employee confirmed there were injuries at the school.

Police are investigating at least five crime scenes. At least 100 law enforcement officers have responded to the crime scenes. The children inside the school have been moved to a safe location.

"Multiple students" have been airlifted from the scene according to Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston. Johnston told local media at least three people are dead, but did not elaborate if any students were among the dead.

Law enforcement says the shooter was shot and killed by police.

A 6-year-old and another child are among the injured. The Redding Record Searchlight reports a 30-year-old man has also been taken to the hospital with gunshot wound to the thigh.

Rancho Tehama Elementary is reportedly now in lockdown. Local law enforcement have blocked off the road that leads to the school.

Sounds like a domestic dispute that carried over into school. Sad for the victims. School is supposed to be a "safe" place, but yet we see over and over, time and time again, it's not Chat Icon

Re: California school shooting

I feel like we need to start locking down our schools like Fort Knox.
And I feel like we need armed security guards at them.
And metal detectors for anyone entering who doesn't belong.
Because it's clear we aren't going to stop crazies from getting guns.
We aren't going to change what is going on in
this country with guns and mental illness.

So the only thing we can do is be reactive and protect our children. Lock up their schools. Keep the schools on the tightest possible security.
Sad, but necessary.
Our taxes go up for everything else. Spend some of that money on paying armed professional security guards and high tech security.

My DD's school is a joke- ANYONE can walk in. Big deal they have to buzz you in. They don't know who they are buzzing in or what you have under your shirt or in your bag.

This is such fuking horseshit

Re: California school shooting

Nothing will be done. I know all lives are as important as each other but when Newtown didn't change this country and its staunch 2nd amendment protectors then nothing will. Its a sad fact of life and or all the great things about this country the caveat is that a lot of its citizens put their "rights" over the safety of others.

I agree with nervous nell - we have to protect our kids and create a fort knox environment for them to learn in - no other choice and then people will be moaning about their property taxes going up.

Agreed, my kids school is the same. I hit the button and half the time don’t even need to speak and they buzz me in. And then the second doors aren’t even locked, bc I at least assumed the shooter would have to go through the admin office first where someone could hit a panic button or something but nope. And my DD comes Home hysterical every time they do the “intruder” drills at school and it has forced me to have sick conversations with my 7 and 8 year olds. I actually had to tell them that if they are stuck in the bathroom to stand on the toilet seat until a police officer gets them.

I’m sick to my stomach everyday I take my kids to school and I’m sick and tired of feeling helpless.

I don't think he got inside the school. What I read earlier was that the students were inside and the shooter was outside shooting into the building.

I bet that every single parent at Sandy Hook Elementary school wishes the school personnel were armed. I don't care how anti-gun they are. Our kids are sitting ducks at school without the right firepower to stop the bad guy Chat Icon

Re: California school shooting

http://www.cnn.com/2017/11/14/us/california-tehama-county-shootings/index.html

(CNN)A gunman killed four people in a remote Northern California community on Tuesday morning, but a much bigger death toll was averted when the killer was unable to break into an elementary school.

The staff at tiny Rancho Tehama Elementary School west of Corning moved quickly when they heard gunfire nearby just before classes were set to begin, Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston said.
Doors were locked and students dashed inside and hit the floors underneath desks and tables.
The shooter, who was killed by police at another site, rammed a stolen pickup through the school's locked gate, walked into the schoolyard, and fired his rifle through windows and walls.
He tried doors, but the buildings at the Rancho Tehama Reserve school were secure. Only an outside bathroom was open, but the gunman found no one there.
After about six minutes, he left, apparently frustrated.
The school district said a student was wounded by gunfire and was in stable condition. Others were hurt by flying glass.

The killer apparently chose most of his victims at random, sometimes firing at passing motorists, homes and also gunning down someone after he purposely crashed into another car.
At least 10 people were wounded or hurt in the string of shootings in Rancho Tehama, about 125 northwest of Sacramento.
The gunman had a tactical vest with extra magazines for his guns, Johnston said, who viewed surveillance video of the shooting.
The wounded victims from the spree included a mother who was driving her children to school when the attacker opened fire on them "without provocation or warning," the assistant sheriff said.
...

The story of what happened, and the backstory of this guy is pretty crazy. I'm still trying to read all of the info about him.

It sounds like the school did everything they were supposed to, and because of what they did, there were no deaths in the school, and minimal injuries.

There is no logical explanation. It's about money, which is way more important than human lives to the GOP.

Human lives are so far on the back burner of President d*ckwad's brain that he actually tweeted out a regurgitated "thoughts and prayers" sentiment this morning to the people of Texas, instead of California. He basically copied and pasted an old tweet and forgot to change the state. Pathetic.

Did he really? At this point the thoughts and prayers are recycled from one shooting to the next. At least have the decency to change the name of the city. Smh.

I’ve had this conversation so many times with parents in my district. They buzz everyone in and they have no clue who they he’ll 1/2 the people are. It’s a double edge sword. People want to be involved and invited into their kids classroom yet opening the doors leaves schools vulnerable. Even pick up and drop off or having kids in the playground. How do we protect kids at those times. I agree we need to make schools as safe as we can. Yesterday that the lock down saved lots of kids lives! I also don’t want our kids to be locked indoors all day long. It’s an awful time we live in. I want our government to try to protect us more from lunatics with guns but sadly they don’t care about our lives.

Terrible Chat Icon Its really crazy to me how schools don't have better security. With all those innocent children there everyday, schools need to make security a priority. My dd's school makes a big deal about how "secure" they are. They started a new system where visitors have to supply ID and have their photo taken to wear on a sticker while they're in the school. It's a joke bc when I went my picture printed out so dark it was impossible to see my face at all. So what's the point of that? And when they had their book fair, they left the side door open for parent helpers to come and go. They had a security guard there, but they made him write everyone's info down on a clip board as they entered, so he was too busy fumbling with a clipboard the whole time to actually do his job of paying attention to possible threats. More paperwork doesn't make a school more secure. Keeping the doors LOCKED and having security guards who are able to fully stay alert to their surroundings makes a school more secure.

My thoughts are with those families Chat Icon truly heartbreaking and terrifying.

You can still be involved and invited to the class room but you need better security IMO. A better system.
You can't have a 60 year old lady as your line of defense either.
You should have to show ID to the camera in a locked vestibule area and state your business. You should have to be on a list of expected visors to gain access. (or picking up a sick child, etc) That area should be secured like fort knox.
I also truly believe in armed/trained security in schools. There are plenty of retired cops who retire young and are looking for a part time job. Who have experience in the police dept.
It won't stop everything of course, but it's a hell of a lot better than a school secretary being the first line of defense.
