Why would you buy a kid a board game you know they already own just in a different character? I really try to be grateful about gifts we receive but this is the kind of thing that always happens and I end up feely crappy about myself for being ungrateful.

Re: Is it me?

I don't understand what board game comes in a different character? I have a family member who gives terrible gifts. I understand.

Re: Is it me?

My boys had a couple of those matching games with different characters or "Guess Who" games. Doesn't bother me. I have given them away if I never opened it or returned it too.

I have no problem returning and donating some things for one reason or another. In this particular case it's from my mom so I know she'd notice. She really tries hard to get nice gifts but in this case (and some others) I just don't follow her thought process.

I agree that you dont need them both...so I would 100% return it and have your child pick out something else. If your mom mentions it, I would tell her that we already have the xyz version of the game so we exchanged it a LO picked out this instead.
Or be proactive and send her a picture of your LO with the new toy and tell her you exchanged it.

Eh, it seems like her intentions were good. She knows LO likes a certain character and got a toy including that character. Maybe you can donate the old version and keep the new one. I wouldn't return or exchange a gift from my mom to my kid, unless she really had the exact same one. And even then, we've just left one at my mom's house and kept one at our house.

Exchange. Intention was good but no need for doubles.

I think it depends on the game. Monopoly comes in like 155 different versions, and I wouldn't mind getting a few different ones.

If it was my mom, she probably forgot you had it or thought it was different.

My mil has done this. There's a little game, like a knock-off of Trouble, with little pegs and a clear dome you push down on to make dice roll so you know how many spaces to move your peg. Mil has bought dd the same game 3 times, just with a different character on it each time. It just makes me wonder if she even pays attention to what she gives dd and if she actually puts any thought into her gifts.

I would never give a gift like that but I have received a few. I just donated them to various toy collections at my son's school.

ITA. It really depends on the game. I wouldn't mind a couple different Monopoly games. Chess sets with different themes would be cool, too. Hungry Hungry Hippos with slightly different colored marbles would not be good... Chat Icon
