Next size up from 4T?

DD's leggings are getting a bit snug on the waist -- they are a 4T. They are still okay in the length. What size would I go up to next for more waist room? 4? 5? 5T? I don't know why but I find this so confusing!

I find 5 longer so I would get a 5t

But really depends on the brand

My older DD went 4T, 4, 5 (we skipped 5T)

Some brands 4/4T is somewhat interchangeable. Some have diaper room in the toddler sizes. It can be a bit of trial and error.

5T in carters/Gymboree
At sizes 5,6... they change the styles and it is made super slim and long.

I feel your pain. It's so confusing.

Generally, I did 5t for brands that carried it. Then a 4 and then a 5.

BUT, I think she was really never a 4. Some of the pants I got her JUST fit her so I started getting her 5 for fall/winter for room to grow. Her size 4 tops are ok, I think she has long legs.

She still fits in some 4t but I've decided I'm only buying 5 from now on. I like the warmer clothes to last until spring and I usually go up in sizes for fall/spring.

I find this horrifically annoying. She won't try on clothes and if she puts something on that doesn't fit, it's hard to get it off her. I know, first world problems.
My DD is average height and slim to avg waist.

H& M
Kohls
Children's place (waist)
Carters/Oshkosh
Old navy, gap
Target

We went to 5t and 4 next - it's annoying - some brands run bigger than others.

Great thing about leggings is that you can fold them under at the ankles and they stay put. I wouldn't worry about length too much.
