Taking off for Halloween?
Happy Halloween everyone!
Just wondering, is it the norm for parents to take off work for Halloween? Both my bosses are out today for the holiday. I didn't grow up with parents who would ever consider or could do that, just curious if it was the norm now.

I did but I get 23 days a year now (well technically I get unlimited time off) and I never use them all up so I pick days like these to take them. I would have taken a half but my boss isn't to keen on that idea all the time and figured I have other stuff to do so I will just take the day.
I have to be at my DD school for a class party (class mom this year) and my DS daycare for his Halloween show.

DD's school has a Halloween parade at 930 in the morning and I do like to be there for it.
I know it's tough for working parents to attend these things.
Luckily I can work from home and attend, then come back home and work so I don't have to take off.
But my friend is a teacher in another district (obviously can't work from home) and she took off to attend the parade and also volunteer in the classroom for the party later this afternoon.
I wouldn't take off for just Halloween or trick or treating- because we can do that after I get home- but for things in the classroom, I can see why people might...because you don't want your kid to be the one without a parent there.
Working mom guilt I guess. 
Fortunately I dont' have to take off and I can still attend but many probably have to take a vaca day.
Once they are out of elementary and there is no more parades/parties , I see no need to take off

haha yes working mom guilt. My job is also very flexible I can work from home disappear for a couple of hours no one would care. I actually feel bad doing that. Like I said since I have the time I just take the day and get other things done too.
But I have to say at my school most classes don't invite parents in for parties and I am grateful for that. It drives me crazy to think I would have to go in to see my kid what a freaking cupcake, chips etc. I see that every day at home I don't need to go to her class and see it there too.
Now if there is a show I get going in, even if they are dong a craft I get but not just for eating.

Maybe they are REALLY into the holiday and need a day of observance?

The commute was very easy today (the roads I take). There was barely anyone on the roads.
I guess people did take off.

I didn’t this year because I work 4 miles from home now but always did when I worked in the city. When DS was in daycare I would go to the party. Then we would ToT at 5-6 ish.

I wouldn''t and my parents never did but I know a lot of teachers are out of my building today for that very reason.

I always took a half day when dd was in daycare. Most parents today at PreK took a half day to be there for the parade. I did feel bad because one little boy has no one there for him so I helped him. He didn’t seem fazed.

My dh decided to wfh today so he could see dd in her school parade. I'm a sahm so I would've been there anyway.

I don't leave early. DD is in Middle School. If we ToT early, there's nobody else home, so what's the point? If we ToT after I normally get home, then everyone else is also home, and DD can get candy from most of the houses.

Taking off for Halloween?
I WFH but I'm taking off an hour early to bring DS toting. If I commuted I'd take half a day. No reason to take the entire day. He's in preschool and parents arent invites to the Halloween party anyway.

I am leaving work early but DS is only 2. When he's in elementary school, I would probably take the day so I can be at his school, take him ToT'ing. I also just love being home and handing out candy and seeing all the costumes.

I am new to my job. My boss was working remotely today and logged on late because she was attending a Halloween party at her kids' school and then was logging off early (3pm) for trick or treating. I am here a month and didn't dare to ask to leave early, but my boss was kind enough to offer to let me leave early, so I am leaving at 3:30.

Taking off for Halloween?
I didn't bc I took off Thursday Friday to go to Disney and I am a teacher, but next year I will be. Last year I was on maternity leave, and I was off the 2 years before that.

I had originally taken off today. My DD has a parade at her school. But something came up yesterday and I had to take 1/2 day. So, I took 1/2 day today too.

I did. But I like to see my kids in their parade and then pick them from up from school. DH could not take off last year and boy did they make him feel guilty for it. This year both DH and I took off. My kids were sooo happy it was like they won the lottery. So worth it! When I was young we never had a Halloween parade at school or anything. Just went ToTing at night.

My DD is almost 2, so not old enough for school yet but there was a parade at daycare. DH and I both took off. I can't imagine still taking off when she's in junior high.
