Anti-Gang Troopers Being Sent to Long Island High Schools
Ten New York state troopers trained in gang violence prevention are being assigned to 10 high-risk high schools on Long Island as part of the state's response to violent gangs.

Anti-Gang Troopers Being Sent to Long Island High Schools

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A special unit of the state police is being assigned to 10 high schools on Long Island in an effort to stamp out gang violence, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday.

The 10 state troopers will work to educate school administrators and teachers about ways to recognize if a student is a member of a gang or at risk of joining. The troopers will also create a curriculum that instructs students on the dangers of gangs such as MS-13, which has been tied to a wave of recent violence on Long Island.

"They are thugs that have to be stamped out," said Cuomo, a Democrat, who traveled to Long Island to make the announcement. "I consider them domestic terrorists. Either they win or we win ... and we are going to win."

The 10 schools are in Brentwood, Central Islip, Huntington, Longwood, South Country Central and Wyandanch. Each school was determined to have higher concentrations of gang violence and more students perceived to be at risk of recruitment.

State police have already beefed up patrols in affected areas and added investigators to a joint law enforcement task force on gang violence. The new troopers, and their educational mission, represent another front in the fight.

"It's a partnership," said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Timothy Sini. "So we'll be doing educational seminars with educators. Educating the educators about gangs and also providing them information about what resources are available in the county and the state so that they can intervene in children's lives; children who are at risk of joining gangs."

The street gang MS-13 has been blamed for 21 deaths in the suburbs east of New York City in the past 21 months. The killings, many of which have involved teenagers, have caught the attention of both President Donald Trump and U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, both of whom have visited Long Island in recent months to promise federal action to stem the violence.

I know the community is upset, to the residents in these areas feel it make it seem their school have gang activity. I think just about all districts have some kind of gang activity, it no longer is just in "those" areas. Like drug use, a huge problem in very well to areas but parents would rather bury their heads

thoughts?? this is in our back yards not across the county

I have no issue with it. Knowledge is power. Being educated on an issue and becoming aware of valuable resources, is the way to make change.

Why a community would be upset about receiving help for their gang problems is beyond me. And frankly this is not the same as the drug epidemic. Gang violence is not present in all Long Island communities. It’s definitely specific to certain areas.

Can I ask where you are seeing / hearing the communities are upset about this?

I know a few people that live in Brentwood and have been screaming to get help against the gangs. So I know they aren't upset about this. And very surprised to hear anyone in the community would be.

The gangs ARE in the schools. It doesn't just seem like it.

There was a follow up that Longwood and Huntington were upset. They were not told they would be receiving the assistance prior to the Newsday story. Both superintendents stated neither have a gang problem in their district.

I don't know enough about either district to have an opinion regarding their statements.

Thank you.

Interesting. Maybe they just want to be proactive. Im very surprised they would be upset about it with all the stories of gangs through out LI.

I don't understand why certain schools were selected and not others. Like are we saying there is no gang activity in Hempstead or Roosevelt that needs to be combatted. That's my issue with the selection of schools.

I think people (especially highly paid school administrators ), prefer to keep their heads in the sand. These specific districts have issues, it's not everywhere. The drugs are everywhere Bc of these gangs. I read a long article on this gang and many times, they are not violent people. The article talked about how these folks work in deli's, coffee shops, childcare, as housekeeper's etc . It spoke about how hard they work .The problem they are bringing to the Island are the drugs. It was stated that the number of the drugs being brought in, is largely from this group. You wouldn't expect your local nanny or barista to be involved in such things. That's the scary part about it. If people become more proactive, these high school kids will have a lot more opportunity and do something good for themselves and their communities.

Here is a recent article

If the people in those areas mentioned don't think there is a gang problem, then they are the ones burying their heads in the sand. If those communities feel it is implying they have gang activity, they are right.

Are those the only areas? Of course not, but I'd like the think the state isn't dispensing these expensive and valuable resources without researching which areas are most in need, and where the gang problem is growing.

It is not the same as the drug problem on LI. Drugs are a problem in ALMOST every district, gangs are not. There may be a couple kids that are members, but it isn't a huge epidemic like in the areas mentioned. It is not to say that every town in Longwood has the problem, but I can name at least 2 that do, or every neighborhood in South Country, but the problem is definitely there, we can't pretend it's not because it's unsettling.

It is not seems, there is a problem. Frankly, there is a drug problem in every school. Saying there is not is just willful blindness. I would really wonder about the motives of the people in power who would not want to accept help and frankly think they may be part of the problem.

This is for gangs though - not drugs.

And I"m sure if it was for drugs - many districts would also complain for damage to their reputation as many of the richer more elite districts have drug problems too.

I live in a top district in another state. If our district can have programming about these things, so can top LI districts.

yes, this is what I meant and News 12 had a segment. residents were including the school admins. Stating having and anti gang team implied they have an issue with gangs, and the community and school insists they dont

Programming yes I agree - but, sending a state trooper is something different.

My husband works for homeland security and has a focus on the local gang issue. I just asked him and he said those districts identified do have gang activity, and he thinks Hempstead should have been on there as well.

For the poster who stated gangs are not the same as drug. Gangs can be in any town and area not just the ones "we assume" they would be in. To assume gangs can only be in certain areas is burying ones head in the sand. Drugs are big on LI yet most people like to assume its not in their town, it all starts with alcohol

It was numerous posters that said you can't compare the two. I was one of them. I think that the problems are very different and I stand by that. And while the drug epidemic is something that EVERY community on Long Island is facing, the gang epidemic is not. I think that the communities where gangs are taking control are hit very hard which is why it's such an alarming topic. But to say that every community on Long Island has gang members seems inaccurate to me.
