First, I don't believe most people equate "white trash" with poor people, instead with Jerry Springer-style antics. I'm fairly certain the op isn't going to be hanging up pictures of the Depression.
Here are some costumes I've seen worn through the years: geisha, Native American, guido/guidette, hobo (bum), cowboy/cowgirl. This is a legit question: can we not wear these anymore?
A couple of years back on this very site, 4 pages of replies were given to the question "Do you use the term white trash?" Overwhelmingly, people answered yes. Now, people are subject to snide remarks for using the same words. Not educated discourse or enlightenment. Insults. That's what we've come down to. George Jefferson and Archie Bunker probably had more intelligent debates.
I threw my DH a Mad Men party 5 years ago for his 40th. Today, I'd probably be accused of celebrating misogyny.

Most of the examples you gave are examples of cultural dress and are not an issue.
Hobo/bum? I think that's pretty awful.
Honestly I am not sure why this is so hard. If there is something insulting in the title, why embrace it? Why mock it? Why hurt people?
Your example about the prior post just proves my point that I made in an earlier post - over time, we become better people. So what if everyone used it years ago? If we can learn and be more kind, isn't that a good thing?
You want mullets, flannel, leg warmers, bad hair, I don't give a shit. But call it an 80s party.
And insulting? Please. The first comment was that she should pick a more culturally sensitive theme. That was as subtle as could possibly be. She responded with an eyeroll and an obnoxious comment. She basically said "I don't give a shit if I might be insulting anyone." So spare me.

I don't think anyone is trying to sound perfect or self-righteous. Just sharing how it's making them feel, or how it's coming across.
If it makes you feel uncomfortable confronting that which makes people feel differently than you, I think it's worth trying to understand it.
Like, why is it funny to have babies from different men?
Why is it funny?
and why are we still calling those tank tops wife-beaters? Is that funny too?
I'm uncomfortable with that. But you don't need to insult me for stating so. And since this is a public forum, you should expect people to share how it's making them feel.
But like, why is this funny?
I'm all for themed out parties. But someone else asked - what are we teaching our kids when we do something like this? That it's ok to make fun of people. That's ok to you.

White Trash party invite wording
My mom was an Irish immigrant and was completely offended by the way St. Patrick's Day is celebrated in America -- people puking green beer in the streets, putting on fake accents, completely caricaturing her culture. I understand the push back we have to our modern propensity to be offended, but this is my basis for thinking about these things. Who am I to police what should or should not offend someone else if they feel they are being caricatured in society?

I don't think there has been snide remarks, and I know I've been posting with the intent of just pointing out that the party theme could be offensive.
The people defending the theme claim that it's not making fun of poor people, but the suggestions on how to execute the theme are all centered around mocking aspects of life for poor, typically rural, people.
The suggestion to mis-spell words, because its funny that poor people are under educated and can't spell. Some are even illiterate, like the father who used to come into my office to have us read a letter from his daughter's school because his wife wasn't home to read it for him. Many never finished high school because they needed to work to help support their families and some just weren't able to pass the tests necessary to graduate.
The suggestion that they only have one tooth, because it's funny that poor people can't afford proper dental care. Going to the dentist is expensive, and in rural areas the nearest dentist may be half and hour to an hour away. Also, it's it's not always easy to take off from work, and lose money from your hourly job, just to go the dentist.
The suggestion that women have children close in age (and even at a young age), because it's funny that poor people don't have access to birth control. Where I grew up the closest planned parenthood or ob/gyn (if you have insurance) is an hour away. Many other areas of the county it maybe much further away. Yes, they can buy condoms at the local drug store, but that isn't 100%.
The suggestion of a John Deere t-shirt or a trucker hat, becauese it's funny that they're farmers and ride tractor or that they drive tractor trailers for a living. Both of these professions are people who are working hard. That farmer is out on the tractor at 4am after he already milked the cows at 3am. That truck driver is away from his family for months so you can get your goods/food/products. The fact that their pants and boots are dirty is because they work hard.
The suggestion of cheap chairs, cheap beer, and cheap food, because it's funny that people can't afford more expensive things. Again, if the claim is that you're not mocking poor people, then why would you have "cheap" things?
If you don't think a White Trash party is about mocking poor people, then you need to do some serious self reflection about what the intent of the party. You're just having fun, but at who's expense. I'm not saying everyone needs to perfectly PC all the time, and I know if you're born and raised on long island you may not have met many people that could be called "white trash." But as someone who grew up in a poor rural area, I felt it was important to state that just because someone drives a pick-up truck, and drinks cheap beer, and loves John Deere that doesn't mean he/she is trash.

IMO the perfect example of trash is the Kardashians.
And they have plenty of money.
So you can go dressed as one of those skanks and it would fit the white trash theme perfectly
Do a lot of contouring on your face, stuff you ass with pillows, fake hair, 14 lbs of make up spackled on your face, fake spider lashes, overly lined lips, gross looking skank clothes like they wear.
And if you want to go as Kim wear an alien mask.
I have a lot more respect for hard working "red necks" than for those skanks any day..

I'm not going to comment either way on the theme. I think that the problem with wording arises because there would be no formal invite to a party with such theme. Maybe someone writes the address on a bar napkin or something.
