Does she get any magazine subscriptions? They are usually the biggest culprit of selling info

Girl Scout magazine

And years ago, over 4 years ago, my mother got her a subscription to National Geographic kids. I called National Geographic back then because I was kind of upset at her receiving mail unbeknownst to me and they assured me kids names are not sold or rented....but she has not gotten anything in the mail for years since that subscription ended (other than Girl scouts) until now.

I am starting to wonder if places like Skyzone, etc, where they take all your child's info, sells them or rents them. I tried to put fake info for that reason but the last time we went for a party, they wanted all the info that I left off. And my child said her name so it had to match when I typed it in.

I doubt it, since we go to Sky Zone, etc. all the time, and my kids only get mail from Lego (which I signed up for). I did receive that same coupon...but in my own name. Do you shop at Justice? I know that they ask for the kid's names at check out. I wonder if they sell that info?

Yes but I don't give her birth date or name for any stores. Unfortunately only Sky zone because she told them her name (I had abbreviated it on the form). And GS magazine and that kids Nat Geographic years and years ago. So it's weird to me.

You abbreviated her name on a waiver? I don't think you should do that legally

Sorry, if I am missing something, but why is this a problem? Yes, junk mail is annoying, but who cares??? Toss it in the garbage.

I agree. I get junk mail daily. Toss it

ITA. I understand seeing your kids name getting mail, but it's nothing personal. It's public record. It's not like they are personally writing out the names. I just throw it away.

It bothers me because years ago I was a victim of identity theft. Getting things in the mail that you may not have signed up for are some of the signs of such. And sadly kids can become victims too and often don't find out until they are much older and their credit is ruined. So seeing my child's info used for solicitation definitely is odd to me when I an very cautious about sharing info.

If getting things in the mail I never signed up for is a sign of identity theft I am REALLY in trouble.

LOL, right???? Besides the fact that most people will be the victims of card hacking and such anyway, believe me it's not coming from junk mail!! Besides the fact that Pinelawn literally sends those out to everyone and their dog, LITERALLY!!! Yes, my family dog received a brochure from Pinelawn.

What if someone is trying to steal your dog's identity??

Well I definitely know that the schools sell the kids name. I remember I used to get the "Who's Who" things. I know friends who received things from an organization who says they got their child's info from school, and they might be interested in xyz. Maybe the school picture company shares the information if the school itself isn't?

I'm just curious as to what anyone thinks can happen if a company has your child's name. I don't understand the reason to be upset. I get mail at my house for my husband's ex wife. Sometimes it's even in her maiden name. She has never lived here. Who cares?

I agree with you.

It's not like anyone is opening credit cards with their SSN

My thought is that children do not have credit cards, do not make purchases on their own, do not drive to stores on their own and use their own money, therefore should not be solicited. What could happen if the name gets sold and rented, etc, is it could mistakenly receive offers of credit and then put the child at risk of fraudulent use of their info, a credit card opened in their name, etc. The use of information these days is concerning at the least, with all of these breaches. A child's info being used for solicitation is not appropriate in any way. When you go to American Girl website, they even state "This website is intended for grown ups only". Because adults are making the purchases, not the children.

Re the ex wife - She is linked with your husband due to being married so somehow they associated that address with her. Regardless, though, she is an adult. I don't see how that compares to a young child who does not make purchases - being solicited through the mail.

I feel like you lose all privacy when using the internet. Plus they use online video gaming where they are providing their name and other information. They sign up at birthday party places when they have to do a waiver. And I'm convinced that NYS sells lists in connection with the common core exams. It's like there is no way you can avoid it these days. It doesn't bother me as I just throw that stuff away but it is kind of scary when you think about it.

And that is the point everyone is trying to make with you....your child is connected to you and your address...or did you not file a birth certificate when child was born

Chat Icon I get the cemetery is disturbing, I was disturbed too when Pinelawn solicited me before I was 30, more so when the dog was. Just move on and toss it. Solicitations are not going to stop, it would be lovely if they would!
