Kitchen/dining room help

I can't decide!!
Right now we have a galley kitchen (with a nice sized table). We were getting ready to gut it and redo when we starting thinking maybe we should switch DR with kitchen. Nothing else can be done with out current kitchen due to stairs in middle of house. DR was a bedroom that we took out. It is one very large room with LR. DR part of the space is approx 13.5x13.5. This would allow for an nice square island in the middle that would seat 4, which we would use daily. The problem we are having is the dining room would then be small. It is approx 9ft wider 13ft long. Our current table is 46in wide and extends to 108. This table (which is new and we love) would never fit. I'm thinking we would need a 36 in wide table (could still extend very long) but it will still look narrow. Hardest part is finding a 36in wide table! I'm driving myself nuts trying to figure out what to do. Would love your opinions??

Also, does anyone have a narrow dining table like that? I would like either trestle or pedestal to allow for extra people at the ends.

Do you have any idea if this is super expensive?

It's all relative. I'm sure you can email them with specs and they can give you a price. Large tables with benches are like 2,000 and 10% off and they throw in a rug. You're looking for a smaller piece.

I love kitchen islands, but I wouldn't sacrifice my DR for it. That sounds too narrow, and thus, impractical. What about a smaller island that doesn't seat 4 but leaving the DR the same dimensions?

Not possible, they are two totally separate rooms.

You need a good designer to evaluate your space. If you bring in your rough dimensions and a photo of the space, we can point you in the right direction during your free in-store consult. You will want this project done right. Your idea is viable and could be magnificent with the right design.

by us, all the homes are small capes with galley kitchens. My house had a rear extension put on in 1960 so we don't have a galley anymore, but we are one of the only homes on our block with a dining room still. The people on my block all knocked out the wall between the kitchen and DR and made one big kitchen. I think it is pretty normal nowadays to not see a DR in a house, but I personally would not want to sacrifice it. I love displaying my china in the china cabinet, and having a place to have a nice dinner on holidays. With that said, I don't really know if young home buyers really care about having a dining room anymore!
