We've ordered the supply kits and yes it is much easier but his year it was over $70 for 4th grade so I didn't do it. I can definitely get the stuff cheaper

Through elementary, we just gave a check with the amount the school suggested. First year of MS they didn't offer it and we bought the stuff. It was a great experience and DS loved it, but I spent much more than I did when it was collected by the school.

Honestly Im surprised. I really thought most schools were offering this. I do agree that it is expensive especially since I see all these sales for supplies and things but on the other hand the thought of looking for 2 highlighters chisel tip, 24 Ticonderoga pencils, Laddie #2 with Eraser, sort of scares me LOL and the list goes on and on. Im sure I will do it for next year since I will eventually have 3 kids in school and supplies would cost me over a 100 if I buy the box.

Don't you live in the Sachem District. I am pretty sure all the elementary schools are doing it. But I know for our school the order deadline passed.

This was the first year our district offered it. Ours was about $25 so it was a no brainer.
Annoyed though I still have to do it for my son entering K since the deadline is early and they won't guarantee school placement for kindergarteners (even though we unofficially know where he's going).

My dd is going into K at merrimac and there was no mention of a supply pack either. From my understanding, it is set up by the PTA but really should be district wide!

We are at Merrimac too. They don't do it there.
I don't think it's a district thing, I think it's an individual school thing

Next year you should suggest it to the PTA. We are Grundy and it is done as a fundraiser. I bet a lot of parents would do it if offered.

That is a lot. My son is going into second grade but I think it was maybe like $38. The stuff in the kid is always name brand, high quality (Elmer's, Crayola, etc.), and again, I'm driven by the ease of not having so search out the particular requirements of the teachers.
For our school, it's never generic stuff like pencils, markers, 5 folders. It's like, 4 pack of fine tipped dry erase markers, specific colored notebooks and folders, odd number of specific glue sticks, one red pen, certain ear buds/ear phones, etc.

Exactly! For K DS 1 needed 3x5 lined post-its, which aren't sold just anywhere, and aren't really cheap.

This isn't an issue for me because our school provides all of the supplies. However, if I had to buy anything, I'd purchase the kit because of convenience.

We are at Merrimac too. They don't do it there.

That's what I don't get... it's good for some schools but not for all... within the same district... just like some had that senior walk day at some elementary schools but not at all. I don't understand why they all can't get on the same page. Grrr.

The K kit was worth it for me because it was 30 some dollars. The 1st grade kit is 60 some, no way! It is actually more than the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. I'm taking this as a challenge to find everything for cheaper lol.

For fun, I just searched for everything on the list on target and it's coming out to $57. I feel like a kit probably would've been cheaper!! Grr... I wonder if any sales will be coming up.

yes it used to be in august and now i hear they always do it in july. they reduce everything for 1-3 full weeks. they make a big section in the seasonal area for it. things are dirt cheap. glue sticks, markers, crayons,.... I stocked up on awesome notebooks for only 10c each last few years.

This is the first year they offered the option to buy supplies through the pta. I checked target online to see what it would cost me versus's buying the supplies through the school and it was pretty close. I just ordered the supplies through school to save myself the time and stress of buying it all in august.
