I only give to the class gift- the one the class mom collects for.
I don't give on my own after that.

Well I really want to give gift to my teacher. Have 2 aids so have to give them.
There is another aid who is one on one for another child - not giving anything
I am not going to give any gifts for speech or OT
I don't know how weird it will be if I meet the speech ..
I am thinking of gettting a small tray of cookies or cakes for the rest..if they come by

Last year I gave only for Christmas I was not happy with them at all.
This year there is some progress , but OT is contracted out , this whole year she has not reached out to me for anything
Speech is mediocre.. and have given her a Christmas gift

The gift giving business is quite expensive

Other. As a class mom I collect money for the class gift. We make it clear it's not mandatory. We sign the card from the whole class regardless. The teacher has no idea who gave and who didn't. I usually give for the class gift and don't do a seperate gift.

I don't expect, and appreciate when I get things. Although I will say, the lotions/etc often go into the donate pile.

Re: Poll - End of year teacher gifts

I give Christmas, teacher appreciation, birthday ( if I know) and end of year gifts to my kids teachers. For the most part I have loved and respected each and every teacher that my kids have had. I go into my kids classrooms during the year for crafts, reading etc and I am in awe of how great these teachers are. I get paid more than most of them do and their jobs are way more important and harder than mine.

PS I give gift cards for Christmas and end of year.

This.

And as a parent, I give my son's teachers gifts for the holidays, teacher appreciation and end of the year because I know how much work they put into helping him succeed.

might be different because I'm not an elementary teacher, but I don't expect gifts from my students at all. I think its alot more common with elementary schools, because I don't really know of any teachers in my building that get end-of-year gifts. We get holiday gifts but that's usually it

ETA: I have never treated my students differently based on whether or not I got a gift for the holidays

I'm with you.

I'm tired of the social pressure/expectation to give. I gave $ to the class collection for gifts, etc in the beginning of the year. The class moms gave the teacher the class gift at the end of the year party. She didn't even say thank you or send home a thank you note. I'm just DONE.

Poll - End of year teacher gifts

I was really upset to see parents at my kids' preschool get the teachers a
"little something on the side" after donating the $20 to our collective gift. Chat Icon It's a token gift, not a kissass contest.
I personally could not afford more than the $60 I dished out for my three children plus the little $2 plants we bought for the 6 teachers back in May for appreciation week, plus the $60 I dished out for Christmas. Chat Icon

We do a group gift for elementary school but, they only collect $10 - $5 goes to the teacher gift and the other $5 gets split amongst the support staff - so in that case I give more to the teacher, as I would normally spend more than $5 on her gift.

If i gave $20 per teacher, I wouldn't give extra.

I am pretty sure this post was spin off to mine. I edited it to say I was just joking about teachers treating kids differently.

I really wanted to know how many people are acutlaly giving.

I am over the whole have to give gifts. I gave in for the class gift and ended up getting something small because DD wanted to.

Don't like DS (who is not in elemntarty school yet) teachers so I am not getting them anything.

It s out of hand all the fing gift giving and I am done.

I may still do Christmas this year but might just stop that too.

I get it. I am a teacher and a mom of 2. This year I gave to the class end of year gift ($10) and I bought a little something extra (also gave a little something for teacher appreciation and christmas) but I feel like his teacher does a lot and is really great. For my younger he was in daycare and school so I had 5 people I just gave little something at Christmas and end of year. I make sure to email and say thank you when I know they did something special or put together a great event.

It is annoying, I hate doing it more for the stress of it because I never know what to give, but I feel as a teacher, we give a lot and it is nice to be appreciated, even with just a small gift, doesnt have to be money. I hug and calm crying students, help with booboos, teach them to get along and share, I spend a lot of my own money for my students. I teach in NYC, I buy snacks because many of my Kindys come with nothing and are hungry, I buy stuff for projects year round and for gifts Christmas, mothers day, fathers day, easter.... I buy chalk and bubbles for them to play with outside, I bought items for hands on modeling to make things for writing How to books. I buy books for them for a christmas gift and put together a graduation gift for each. I send pictures as often as I can so parents can see what we are doing...

Its a lot of work, being appreciated is nice. I don't get that much in NYC and I dont get reimbursed for the extras.

I would hope my son never comes across a teacher that would treat him differently if he didn't gift.

This year I had about 20 people to buy for since my son has multiple aides ,therapists, before care teachers, a bus driver/matron, and then teachers from outside programs. I gave mostly $10 DD GC's because it was all I could do but it did add up. I wish I could do more because I appreciate everyone that is involved with helping my son.

You didn't put an option about buying a gift b/c you want to.

Honestly, its tough, I hate it honestly, on one hand I want the teachers to feel appreciated. On the other, by the time you add everyone up for the end of the year time, and the Christmas time, its a significant expense and headache to come up with gifts for everyone. bus drivers, reading teachers, PT, OT, sunday school, et al.

We're in kindergarten, so its also tough to know who you're "supposed" to get something for and who is really optional.

For instance, bus driver... IMHO, why am I doing this? but if everyone else is.... I don't want to be the douche who doesn't.

It wsa easier in my old office, there were 5 admins, they collected $$$ from the managers and partners, it was pooled and given to them for the Holidays. It was enough you didn't feel like you needed to do any more and it was appreciated.

Re: Poll - End of year teacher gifts

I always give to the class gift and than we do our own I always feel like the teachers go above and beyond and I like to give something extra to them. I give at Holiday time and than again at the end of the year.
I don't feel pressure to at all. Last year I was class mom and most of the class contributed to the class gift and about 1/2 of those kids also gave the teacher another gift on their own.

I actually think the bus driver is one of the most important people in my daughters life. She drivers her to and from school and keeps her safe. I'm always happy to give the bus driver a thank you and a gift.

Re: Poll - End of year teacher gifts

This must be a new thing because I NEVER gave gifts to teachers growing up.

ETA: Nevermind, maybe in elementary school if it was a grouped monetary thing that a class mom organized. But a separate gift just from me, never.
