Music at the office...

If you live in the cubby world.. what do you think is appropriate?
Look, I understand everyone’s tastes are different but it’s really hard to work on important, urgent, time pressing work with a Got-to-get-it-done-kick-butt attitude when I have mellow flow, crying, weepy music flowing behind me. It’s just SOOO Hard to be motivated. Opera, slow dance, orchestra, mixed with slow jazz, a few old timey songs but nothing with a beat or something to get me going. Just drag me down to the depths of hell and despair.

I’m DYING!

I swear I think it actually affects my mood. Do you think that’s possible? I put on my phone (Spotify) to counter but it’s like a drain. Do you think there should be like company rules on that kind of thing?

IMO, you shouldn't be able to hear music played by a coworker. They should use head phones and not play it so loud that you can hear it through their head phones.

Agreed - I *hate* when I can hear someone else's music. If it's not soft enough then they need to put on headphones. If headphones aren't allowed, they shouldn't listen to music that others can hear.

This is a tough one. In our office, we used to allow headphones but then people stopped hearing their phones or when someone would call their name, they couldn't hear a thing so we stopped that.

I think if you put the music low enough that it does not affect the people around you its ok, but if it's to the point where it's annoying to others....someone needs to speak to them.

It's kind of all or nothing, you can't tell someone they can't listen to it and then another worker on the other side is playing theirs.

I don't think music should be allowed at all in an office.
It's not fair to the others
I for one, can't concentrate with any music on, I've always been like that.
If I hear someone else's music it drives me insane.

If you want to wear headphones, fine, but as someone else mentioned if it causes you to not hear your phone then no music. Period

Music at the office...

I worked in an office for a very short period of time that one of the managers would have her music very loud in her office and sing along. It was TERRIBLE! I could not concentrate some days. I am not a fan of headphones in the office either. I say keep it very low or nothing at all.

this. It drives me insane when people don't wear headphones.

Listen I watch TV on my phone while working Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon but I obviously have headphones on and only one bud in so I can still hear other things.

The only time I wear both headphones is when the obnoxious loud, disgusting eater is eating at there desk so I can drown out the sound. If I don't do that I would probably get fired from yelling at him to stop chewing the way he is Chat Icon

Music is played here. Actually one person plays Pandora; but she switches it.

One week its 80's.
Another week its Oldies. etc.

And if we are sick of the station we just ask her to change it. We all have access to music on our computers; but we just listen to hers and dont have a problem with it.

Its background music to me; so I dont mind it all.

Can you play music on your computer instead of your phone? You may hear it better and it will most likely help block out the sad, soppy music as well.

I would complain. Because I know for sure that I would have to listen to their music but they wouldn't listen to mine.

I use earbuds, and keep one out unless I really need to concentrate or people are being really loud and I need to drown them out.

Rude in an open office.

I stream Pandora from my computer, wear only one ear bud so I can still hear my phone, someone call on my name.

Re: Music at the office...

I agree with the others. thats what headphones are for. we are in open cubes and if i heard music regularly from anyone around me, i'd not be happy.
