I'll just share this....
I took my 5 year old along for her younger sisters doctor appointment. She looked like the textbook definition of a hot mess. Tutu, crazy shirt, insane headband, no matching at all.
My little ones pediatrician is one of the best in the field, as she has some minor health concerns. He took one look at my 5 year and said the following:
"you're really doing a great thing by letting her choose her own clothes. You're giving her control over her body. Parents always try to fight their children for that control, but it's a great lesson to teach them that they have control of their own body and what goes on it, because it translates to them having control over who can touch them. It's especially important for girls."
And here I thought I was just making my life easier, lol.
I don't even go upstairs with my 5 year old to get dressed, she's on her own. I'll tell her warm weather or cold weather and that's about it.
LOVE!!!! I do the same... lately I tell my kid long/short sleeves and pants/shorts and she picks out the rest. You never know Day to day with this weather!!! Like I said, she looks like a hot mess most days but she's learning decision making and that's a okay by me!
As for the 10 yr old I babysit, she came waltzing out yesterday in a summer shorts/spaghetti strap outfit and flip flops... warned her she would be cold but she'd learn on her own.. LOL needless to say she was a bit more dressed today

5yo battles over clothes
My 7 year old has always had a strong clothing opinion.
First, everything had to be blue... Then everything could only be super heroes. Now everything has to be Nike or Under Armour. No jeans, no pants with buttons, no shirts with buttons. Dressing up is an Under Armour polo with elastic waist khaki pants or shorts...
My 5 year old is a little better - as long as it's comfy (which it is since he has a lot of hand me downs). But, compared to his brother he's a lot easier.

I see that the button, zipper issue is pretty common. I thought it was just my DD. When she was younger I really thought she had a sensory issue because she didn't like anything other than sweatpants or leggings or dresses.
But she's almost 7 now and it's still the same. Glad I am not alone here
I will say, if I could get away with wearing elastic waist pants every day and still look cute I would totally do it!!!!
My daughter is almost 6 and has never even owned a pair of jeans.
This generation is smarter than us. If they stick together manufacturers will have to adapt. Rip uncomfortable waistbands!

My 3.5 yr old has been picking out his own clothes for a while now.
Pick your battles
