Effective tick repellent
With everyone reporting that the tick problem is so bad this year, what is everyone using? I'm afraid my Honest co and Burt's Bees isn't going to hack it this year.

Deet. I showed my ped the California Baby stuff I bought last year and she looked at it, said "all natural is code for doesn't work. You need some Deet!"

Effective tick repellent
Can anyone recommend something GREAT for me to use on my 8-year old daughter while she's in camp this summer? I'm real nervous about ticks!
*I thought for children they say it has to be Deet Free, no?

I like poofy organics bug spray, I'm not sure how it is with ticks though.

I plan on using everyday, so I will use a natural repellent like the one linked above or oils for everyday use in the yard, when we plan to be in higher tick areas (even my parents yard which backs up to woods), I will use Deet. I am OK with Deet, but I just dont know about it if I am going to be using DAILY.

My pediatrician said the same thing. He said the risks associated with bug bites far outweigh the risk of Deet.
That being said, I do find that Avon's Skin So Soft line works well.

Deep Woods Off
If you want a lower concentration of Deet you can use the other kinds of Off they have one that smells good- it's like in a pump- it has a lower concentration.
They have a dry spry one that isn't sticky etc.
You can just see what concentration it says on the label and go from there.

I'm in a FB Dog group. A lo of people recommend Essential Oils.

Question: Do you plan on putting it on daily? or just when in areas where you know ticks can be found?
Would we need it when in our backyard in Queens? I have really only used it when we were out East in Montauk or in our friends yard in South NJ, where they know there are ticks.

I don't.
Actually I rarely wear anything because mosquitos don't bite me. I mean I can literally be sitting right next to my DH and he will be getting eaten alive and I am not touched.
I can't even tell you the last time I had a mosquito bite.
But DH has to bathe in DEET to even set foot out the door.
As far as ticks, I have never worn anything in my yard and never in my years here seen a tick at all.
So no, I'd only wear it if I was like in the woods or areas that are known for ticks

I wouldn't worry about using it in Queens. I live in a very woodsy area of LI, and even I don't feel comfortable using DEET daily.
Before my kids play outside, I put a natural tick repellent on them...1 cup water, 2 cups white vinegar, and 20 drops eucalyptus oil. They STINK when they wear it, but I have never (knock on wood) seen a tick on them while wearing this spray. I would 100% use a DEET repellent on them while hiking or something like that.

No where in the Northeast is safe, it doesn't matter whether it's the boroughs or L.I. I technically live in Queens, but 1/2 mile away is Nassau County, believe me, the ticks don't know not to cross the border!!!
