I don't know but I hope to not give into what it is becoming. Another religious holiday turned commercial. A long time friend of mine who is also a self proclaimed atheist face timed us with her daughter to show us everything she got for Easter. I asked her if they also went to mass to celebrate Jesus for Easter. I can't stand when people use a religious holiday to spoil their kids & there is no acknowledgement of the Holiday's true meaning.

To be fair, it's very hard to not do anything for your kids for a holiday you don't celebrate when they are hearing about it everywhere. Two years now, dd has come home from school hearing all about the Easter bunny and asking why he doesn't come to our house. She even brought home a board book about the Easter bunny from public school prekChat Icon. You can bet she hasn't come home asking for a passover seder or a box of matzo. They get easter baskets from my ILs and do a little egg hunt with them which took me a few years to even be comfortable with. This was the first year I got my kids anything bc I felt guilty that my 5yo kept asking why the Easter bunny didn't come to our house. Religion is not something we really talk about yet and it sucks to end up in an awkward position bc you are in the minority.

But so what?

Bunnies are cute and candy is fun. Plus it's nice to celebrate the start of spring.

That is what the holiday means to them.

You do you and let them do them. It doesn't have to dilute the meaning for you.

And if you think about it, the Easter bunny, Santa , etc are all secular characters.
There is no religious significance of the Easter bunny or Santa.
Easter is about Jesus rising from the dead, not a bunny who brings eggs.
So in essence it IS secular.

Yes, exactly! The bunny has nothing to do with Jesus

Actually that's not true. Santa Claus is St. Nicholas a saint, he was known for his secret gift giving and Santa Claus was derived from him. The Easter bunny has roots going back to Germany and the 17th century. There is some different talk regarding the bunny and its symbol but one is it represents rebirth.

ETA: My DD's public pre-k had an entire week of "easter activities", 2 days of easter egg hunting, 1 day of easter egg dying, and reading multiple books about the easter bunny, etc. My daughter, did not hear any passover stories, get to share matzoh with her friends or anything. Very frustrating. On top of it my in-laws shower her with gifts and candy for Easter which is aggravating to me. So I have made "Easter" about the celebration of spring. I don't need to find fault in bunnies, spring colors, egg hunting... but I like it to be the day of spring celebrations...

My daughter goes to private pre-k so they don't have to follow any start regulations. They had a Spring party and focused on Spring type things in addition to learning about Easter and Passover. Same at holiday time.

Also I used to go toCatholic school when I was little and we celebrated and learned about all holidays. We actually used to make little clay Dreidles.

Well, I made the mistake of getting the LARGE Pottery Barn basket Chat Icon so I feel compelled to fill them up now. Honestly though, my kids aren't huge candy kids, especially my 4 yr old DS, so I tend to get more gifts then candy but I get little things.............punching balloons, a stuffed animal, puzzles, bubbles, journals, books, cool pens, toy figurines etc.

Bottom line- who cares?
Who cares what other people do?
Who cares what they post or don't post?
Do what works for YOU.
Don't feel bad
Don't feel guilty.
Don't feel not good enough.

Make a tradition that works for you and YOUR family.
Whether that be getting a pony for each kid and a sunrise egg hunt with mimosas or a small basket with a chocolate bunny and a bunch of jelly beans.

Just own it. Like everything else in parenting. Make a decision based on what works for YOU and own it and don't worry about what others are doing.

Everyone has their own traditions.

What I buy my daughter and what we do for Easter is 100% based on me making her happy. Not on what my neighbors or facebook friends are doing or posting

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Who cares what anyone else does. People spend entirely too much time stressing over what others do, spend, say, and post. On FB, people interpret everything as a brag when maybe it's just a harmless post but that post makes you feel insecure so it angers you. Everyone should do whatever works for them.

I LOVE the holidays, all of them, so I tend to do them up but that's just me and I don't do it to brag or make someone else feel less worthy, I do it because I am holiday crazy. LOL I keep a tree up from Oct through Dec for goodness sake and do a Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Xmas tree. See, holiday crazy! LOL

Take what others do with a grain of salt and don't let it bother you.Chat Icon

OMG so much yes!! Especially Easter which for Christians is the highest holy holiday. My cousin is Atheist and celebrates Easter. I'm like what??? I don't get it.

OP: Don't feel bad. I didn't even want to do Easter baskets. DD1 is 9 and knows there is no such thing as the Easter bunny and DD2 is 1 and couldn't care less. DH ended up running to Walgreens and buying pre-made baskets. To each his own but over here we are drowning in toys and crap and I feel no need to add to that.

The egg thing is actually pagan... colorful Easter egg dying tradition goes back over 1000 years BC. It represents Spring.

But that said, my kids learned about both Easter and Passover and had separate days celebrating both. I don't mind either.

Oh that burns my biscuits. It's literally, as Catholics, our most sacred day. Don't turn it into a day everybody celebrates.

I just don't get this, you can't win. Everywhere I go people were wishing me a happy Easter, strangers going out of their way to give me easter egg hunt flyers, play dates that turned into egg hunts, etc. If you (general you) want it to be a religious holiday it should be celebrated as a family and church thing and not extended to everyone in the community. Unless someone advertises that they are a different religion or atheist it is assumed you are some form of Christian and that you celebrate. Makes it hard not to recognize the holiday. I've finally (mostly) gotten over being dragged into recognizing easter and now people are complaining about it.

Re: When did Easter Become the New Christmas??

Does it really matter to some if other people are non-believers or they're showering their kids with tons of crap and posting it on social media? Does it really matter if someone is atheist and posting pics of their kid celebrating "secular bunny day" on fb? There are Christians that vary in their level of practice. Should a Catholic who doesn't regularly go to mass not be celebrating the holiday? Should they be celebrating more modestly than someone who does? Not being snarky, just genuinely curious what people think about this topic.

OP, and anyone who relates to your post, never doubt your decisions based on what other people do. You do the best for your family and never let what anyone else is doing conflict with that. As the parent you make sure you're the one teaching your kid the importance of the holiday.
