Possible spoilers below if you haven't finished!!!

I finished it last night. I don't know why but something really bothered me about the main character. The two times when she expected people to run after her (Clay & Mr. Porter) after she clearly pushed them away...that doesn't make them horrible people & shouldn't make them feel responsible for what she did. They show her as a pretty strong girl, her parents love her...she seems smart enough to realize that reputation in HS means nothing...that if she did move somewhere else for college she could have a fresh start. It frustrated the hell out of me that she expected the guidance counselor to help her, yet she didn't want to give him any info he needed in order to help. Don't get me wrong, I think shows like this are really important...I just feel like this could've been done better. They could've done more with the depositions...it seemed like they were all starting to tell the truth. I would've liked to see some closure in the case for the parents & those involved.

It's based on a popular YA book.

Originally I was interested in it so I looked it up on Netflix. I wasn't thrilled with the trailer and it seemed a bit too juvenile for me so I didn't end up watching it.

Re: 13 Reasons Why (Netflix)

So this sounds a lot like a movie I recently watched on Netflix called A Girl Like Her.

Look it up- if you liked this concept, you'd probably like the movie.

She basically secretly video tapes the girls who torture her and bully her to the point of suicide and a friend of hers finds the tapes and exposes it all

It probably has a young adult feel to it because it takes place in a HS. I really like the message that it conveys.

I don't usually mind shows that take place in a HS setting but this one just isn't resonating with me. I'll give it another shot. Chat Icon

I think they did that intentionally....because she's a teenage girl who is struggling with stuff....and sometimes that makes you act irrationally. Sometimes you want people to fight for you - but you don't want to tell them that that's what you want. It's not fair to the other person, obviously....but she didn't care about that at the time. I thought it was pretty realistic as far as human nature is concerned....we don't always make the right choices and our choices don't always make sense to others.
And I think they're gearing up for a 2nd season, so that's why they left it unfinished.

I also think its intentional. Yes she can come off as a strong girl but the point is we never know what is going on with someone on the inside.

The entire cast has their issues. The jock with issues at home, the rich kid who rapes etc. But on the outside you would not know about all of it.

The fine line with Clay, though, is that he tried multiple times after they kissed to figure out what was going on. He obviously didn't want to leave, but she kept yelling at him to go. When he finally left, and she wanted him to come back - that would have been difficult for someone like Clay. He's already rather inexperienced and very hesitant about his standing with her (shown by all the times he wanted to say something but didn't). If he had gone back after she repeatedly yelled at him to leave - she could have taken that as him being aggressive and not following "no means no."

I felt badly for the guidance counselor. It seemed like he tried to help her, but she didn't want to talk. I think they referred to him as not having a psych degree, so he should have followed up with her to give her resources. I don't know what's supposed to happen in these cases (when someone hints about suicide) but it also seemed like he should have alerted her parents so they could help her quickly.

Having Weber as the principle made me think that something "bad" was going on at the school with the principle, counselor, and the lawsuit. Weber seems to play the bad guy a lot lately, so I kept thinking the school was trying to cover things up (which wasn't really what was going on - they had no idea that Hannah was being bullied - except with the suicide note to the teacher).

The guidance counselor did a horrible job. I work in a school and he had NO IDEA how to talk to those kids. I cringed every time he was in a scene because he was so inept.
However, in his storyline, he has a newborn....so I can't fault him for that. I think he was overtired and that's what led to him sucking at his job at that point in time. Which is important to remember....because they seemed to focus a lot on how each person had their own struggle they were going through when other people needed them.

Totally unrelated.....but I was so sad that Jeff died...he was awesome!
