Elecare?

DS was put on elecare in early February, we have continued to mix with alimentum because he wouldn't fully take to elecare. We have now had success and only our 1oz alimentum with 5oz elecare. Did anyone else's child get constipated on elecare? He seems to be having more gas pains with the elecare

Re: Elecare?

Both of my kids were/are on Elecare and yes, both became constipated for a few weeks in the beginning. Once their bodies get used to it they should start to regulate themselves again.

Also, if your baby has a true milk protein allergy I would cut the alimentum out altogether. Alimentum has milk protein casein in it. If he has a true allergy even the small traces inside that 1oz will effect him. He could potentially be getting constipated from that. Babies are generally put on Elecare because they cant tolerate anything else. If you're still adding in a formula that he couldnt tolerate, he's likely still having some symptoms.

A lot of babies have trouble with Elecare because its a very thin formula and it either causes them to choke or causes reflux flare ups (because it's pre-broken down essentially), not because they dont like the taste. If that's the case, try adding a very small amount of rice cereal in to thicken it. We use about 1/2 teaspoon per 3oz of formula. It thickens it just enough that she doesnt choke down the formula and it helps with her reflux.

Because it was so thin and he already had reflux we were advised to mix in the aimentum. We are phasing out our last ounce- this has been almost 7 weeks of doing this... and then he will be on straight elecare!

pretty much this, exactly. although i can understand why you mixed it in. But because you are still mixing it in, it probably is causing the constipation.
My son was put on Neocate (its essentially the same as Elecare) and if you can or look it up on the company website, it states that there is very little waste since the formula is so broken down. so they don't poop all the time. While this is a generalization, some kids may go more often (mine still does every day) some kids may go a few days before having a bowel movement. Either way, it may take some time before the constipation goies away.
