Re: If you were to move and buy a new home

We bought our home last year and when we were looking, our "must haves" included:

- at least a 1.5 car garage, a basement, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a large kitchen, master bath, GAS heat, NOT on a busy road, no major repairs needed like new roof/boiler/floors, etc.

I love our house, it has everything we were looking for and more (I am still tickled over having more than 1 zone heating, lol) and we have enough yard space to expand our house and still have room for a large in-ground pool. But I would only change 1 thing about this house that irks me...and thats .... low ceilings. Since we bought a Ranch, our ceilings for the entire house are only 8 feet high, I really miss higher ceilings. Chat Icon

Re: If you were to move and buy a new home

We're dreaming here because no way can I afford to move.
But if I could this would be my ideal....

I'd want to live someplace with a warmer climate.
So I could have a tennis court on my property Chat Icon
I'd also want more bedrooms (maybe 5), and bigger bedrooms, and at least 2.5 baths (an en suite would be nice).
MUST have a decent sized basement
Maybe would be cool to have an attic
lot of closets
lots of natural light
Big shady private backyard
Would love a separate den (playroom) & living room.
Bigger kitchen
2-car garage
I'd want it to be turn key because we aren't handy & don't want to spend time doing renovations.
modern/updated ( don't like older homes which my current home is )
gas heat
2 full floors (not incl basement)
central AC
Big Front porch

Re: If you were to move and buy a new home

We just moved last spring (wow, it's almost a year ago already!) but we were fortunate to get everything on our list.

*Two car garage
*Good size grassy private yard (no pool)
*4 bedrooms all on the same floor
*Master bathroom
*Large finished basement
*Separate living room and den
*Updated enough where we'll be happy living here without pressure to change anything for a few years
*No more than 40 min commute to the city on a direct line/no transfers since that can be annoying
*Office space

Re: If you were to move and buy a new home

We moved 2 years ago OOS and built a new house so it has almost all of our must-haves, many of which were listed on this this thread. But, the one thing I couldn't get with our builder was a fireplace. There really isn't anywhere to put one now bc we have an open layout and one wall is almost entirely windows. We plan on putting in a patio/lanai and will put in a gas firepit, it'll have to do.

I also really miss having a basement. Don't have those here.

ETA some things that were important to us:

4+ bedrooms
separate playroom on main level
lots of natural light
large open kitchen
master and kids' rooms all on same level
home that was 2 levels
double ovens
large island (ours is 12 ft long)
large backyard
ample closet space

2500+ square feet
Finished walk out basement
5+ bedrooms, 3+ bathrooms
Does not need gutting/major immediate work
Close to parkways
Central air very preferable
Open kitchen/entertaining area
1+ acres land

We are not looking on Long Island.

If you were to move and buy a new home

We're in the process now. Moving from a 3 bedroom cape with a full finished basement to a 4 bedroom colonial without a basement.

We REALLY wanted a full finished basement but the area we are moving is a high flood risk and it's tough to find homes with a basement. So we basically got everything else we wanted except that, we'll see how it goes...

Must haves:
At least 2500 Sq ft
4 bedrooms (on same level)
2.5 baths
Attached garage
Eat in Kitchen plus formal dining
Open concept
Fireplace
Large rooms
Office space (or extra bedroom)
CAC
Gas stove or ability to be put in
Walking distance to LIRR

4+ bedrooms
formal living room + family room
large enough kitchen to get an 8+ burner stove, wall ovens w/french doors and an island or peninsula
yard large enough for an outdoor kitchen ( small is OK )

10 min or less walk to train

this is why Im never going o find anything

My dream kitchen.....We saw a few homes that fit this description in Long Beach. But they were on the bay and over our budget. Maybe our next home lol

This sounds wonderful. I'd also include a finished basement and fireplace.

I only bought my home last year so I got a lot of the things I wanted- quiet street, walking distance to stores/LIRR, preferred school district, 3 large bedrooms on 2nd floor, formal dining room, sun room, 2 baths. Our living room and back yard are a little wonky, which initially turned us off but we decided we could live with it and make some changes down the line. I'm very happy with our purchase overall.

ETA: I'd also love a walk-in pantry in the kitchen and a master bath in the bedroom!

Ha! So true. I am in Northeast Queens and a million dollars is chump change for the prices of homes around here. You will need another $150k to renovate the hunk of junk after you buy it, and that is being conservative.

we looked at long beach one day. theres a house STILL on the market that looks straight out of New Orleans. Then we realized the train commute would be torture.

Haha yes! We've seen it. Yeah, that's our one drawback the commute is longer. But we're beach people and it's as close to "city life" as I can find living on LI in the sense that you can walk everywhere and there's a lot of diversity. Far as hell from any highways though lol

I live in a condo so I have a lot to get right the second time around... lol. I want a basement and an en suite bathroom. Oh and a yard and a garage! We already have 3 bedrooms, and don't need more. At least 2 full bathrooms. A kitchen with an island would be nice too.

Re: If you were to move and buy a new home

We are currently planning to move off the island in the next 2 - 3 yrs. I have been keeping my eye on zillow and these are my wants:

3000 + Sq ft
1.5 + acres
Front porch or ability to put one on the house
8 - 9 school district
2 story colonial or craftsman
Walkout basement
2-3 car garage
4-5 bedrooms
At least 4 of the bedrooms upstairs
Master suite
At least 2.5 bathrooms
Office space
Great room
Fireplace
Laundry room w/counter & hanging space
Central air
Gas
Zone heating / air
Large kitchen / breakfast area
Double wall oven
Island w/seating
Pantry
Mud room
Dining room
Foyer

*I don't feel the need for a formal living room. We currently have one and its basically wasted space

I know I'm going to have to compromise here and there, but I'm hoping I can hit the majority of stuff. We are currently considering building a house.
