President's address to congress

What were your thoughts on it?

As always with every one of these, it's so frustrating that everyone has to applaud after every single sentence practically. But aside from that, I thought it wasn't half bad. He seemed to speak much more presidential and less Trump-like which is always nice.

Re: President's address to congress

I did not watch but read transcript and saw clips.

I thought it was a good speech, but I am leaving it at that. One speech where he does not go off the rails does not mean much. He hasn't changed. I really had a tough time watching some of the commentators talking about how he's 'pivoted' and now is 'presidential' as if his policies will change, as if this is permanent. Russia is still an issue, and I am sure he's going to rant about the unfair media again by the end of the week.

Re: President's address to congress

My FB friend posted a good comment so I'll just leave that here (sums up how I feel too):

You can make even the most ignorant, racist predator sound convincingly Presidential by giving him the right lines to read.

FWIW, I was disgusted by Trumps pathetic attempt to parade private citizens that were victims of tragedy (terrorism, combat, racism, illegal immigrants) for political gain. It was just in bad taste. Plus, zero details about policy.

I think President Trump did a great job and judging by Wall Street today, so do many others.

I did not watch

There were a ton of fact checks on my FB feed though. That's enough for me.

I also think he did a great job. From what I've seen, he's getting plenty of praise from both sides.

Its sad how low the bar is. He managed to read off a teleprompter for an hour without saying anything crazy, so what.

He said nothing substantive and I thought it was disgusting how he exploited that poor widow.

Why do you think he exploited her? While she was obviously upset because of her loss it didn't seem like she was uncomfortable.

And I don't think he was reading from a teleprompter. If he was he seemed to not need it much because it never looked like he was reading. I realize this is not anything to base the overall speech on, I'm just saying.

He sounded better but didn't really say anything we haven't heard before. I think he's an idiot for pushing this VOICE task force or whatever it's called. I guess in his mind those who are victims of crimes committed by illegal immigrants are more important? The only good part was having Ryan Owens wife there but honestly I wouldn't be surprised if it was all for show.

Every president reads off a teleprompter.

He actually said a lot of substantive things and I think if you asks that poor widow if she felt exploited I think she would tell you quite the opposite. I think she felt honored and she felt that the sacrifice her husband made for his country was honored in a way that most military who are killed in action are not honored.

He could shit rainbows and butterflies at this point and some of you would not be impressed.

He addressed the JCC threats. He addressed pre-existing conditions while repealing the ACA. Why can't anyone just acknowledge some of the good things he said?

This board was crickets today and that actually speaks volumes if you ask me.

Victims of crimes committed by illegal immigrants are more important than who? I'm not sure what you are implying. I am not sure that was the appropriate place to bring up this task force and I don't think he explained it well but any task force established to help VICTIMS is a good thing to me. And of course any victim of a crime is "more important" than the perpetrator of that crime.

I have not watched it, but I did read that he said something against anti-Semitism. Yet, he still has an anti-Semite (Bannon) as an advisor. Sorry, that gets no pass.

One good "presidential" speech does not make a good President.

Yes I was very surprised that this wasn't already a topic. I guess if he doesn't do or say anything that people can rip him apart for then they won't bother talking about it at all.

I thought he sounded good too. Presidential. But puh-leeze! It was one decent hour amongst hundreds of damaging, divisive, disastrous hours. He's not a kindergartner with behavioral issues who needs positive reinforcement. It was the least he could do to try to assuage the fear and tensions of the last month.

He read a decent speech. Yay. The fact remains, the REAL Trump is the one we've watched throughout the election, the one who tweets like a scorned child, and the one who can't construct a coherent sentence while being interviewed. That's the real Trump, not the teleprompter BS from last night. It's all smoke and mirrors.

As usual, lots of big plans and promises with ZERO explanation as to how he'll fund any of it. Somehow, we're going to increase spending in excess of billions of dollars while decreasing the deficit and giving huge tax breaks to the middle class. Yea, OK. That's going to work out swell, I'm sure. Chat Icon

I'm also completely put off by his whole "America First" rhetoric. I wish he'd stop talking about how everything is about America now and basically to hell with everyone else. It makes us look so bad as a country. I feel like he's giving NO thought to how we're perceived across the globe and he's going to make enemies of everyone.

As an aside, Paul Ryan looked like such a phony. He's so smug and two faced, I can't stand him. Bunch of spineless Republicans.

To end, one scripted speech doesn't negate what he's already said and done and his general immature, moronic behavior. If he was left to his own devices that speech would've sounded like the ramblings of a 4 yr old just like EVERY other speech he's ever given. Still not hopping on his crazy train!

Sorry but I guess I should have expanded more. He gave an example about someone being attacked by an illegal immigrant that was a gang member. My thought is any person attacked by another person, regardless of the perpetrators nationality, should be given the same treatment and justice. I feel like he's putting to much emphasis on illegal immigrants at this point.

I hope I explained it better. There is never an instance where I would think a perpetrator would be more important than a victim.

In all honesty I didn't quite understand the whole task force but what I did get is that you could get swift and immediate justice if a crime is committed against you by someone that is not here legally. All people do deserve just process but if you are here illegally and you commit a crime there are different networks of justice and I "think" that was the point. Like I said, he didn't make it clear which was unfortunate because I think it was the only sour point of the speech.

If you were struggling because of the unfair trade policies that we have with other countries you might feel differently. The fact is we are all privileged here on long island and I think its hard to get the perspective of people that have been detrimentally affect by the trade deficit.

From what I saw I think his writers wrote an excellent speech and he did a great job reading it.
I just don't have much faith in him.

As for the widow. I dont necessarily think he exploited her. I'm pretty sure she knew what to expect. However when he made the comment about breaking a record in reference to the standing ovation. I thought that was in extremely poor taste. Although his widow didn't seem to mind. She smiled raised her hands and applauded harder.

Agreed here, what he did was a performance yesterday and if you're grading him on how he was on script and not dissing anyone, sure he gets the A.

But his words aren't consistent with his actions. For example, he hasn't drained the swamp but filled it even more and he isn't giving us clean water - hours earlier he rolled back the Obama clean water rule.

He still talks like he's campaigning for chrissakes!

What a hypocrite...

Yes, saying that serviceman must be very happy right now seriously annoyed me. He's just so clueless.

I had little to say about the speech overall, mainly bc he didn't say much that was new. Some of his remarks were also so inconsistent with his actions or previous talk. His opening remarks about antisemitism came the same day he tried to blame it on people trying to make the other side look bad. He talked of clean air and water the same day he moved to get rid of a clean water regulation. There are a few things he talks about that I can get behind but I don't trust him for a second to do anything right or in the best interest of the little guy or the environment.

Re: President's address to congress

So now our new bar for being "Presidential" is reading one script that someone else wrote, and not going off the rails and acting like a whiny baby....

His speech was filled with plenty of outright lies that are again, easy to confirm. The words he said directly contradict the actions he's been taking over the last several weeks, and the last several months.

He made a lot of "campaign" promises, but never actually said anything about how he plans to accomplish them.

When a Democrat recognizes families of fallen service members, the right-wing media tears them apart for politicizing it. However, when a Republican does the exact same thing, it's honoring the victim. I appreciate the families being recognized, but when trump refuses to take any blame for an action he took, it does seem much more like he's politicizing rather than honoring.

"Actions speak louder than words" is what I'm basing his presidency on, and with all of the safety, environmental, corporate profit, and banking policies that he's trying to write, and the fact that he isn't actually accomplishing much other than talking a big game, I'm not impressed that he can read a speech.

This has nothing to do with "privilege"..................which BTW, I'm so tired of hearing about with regards to Long Island. Chat Icon

That aside, I said what I did because he's giving off the impression to the world that we don't care about or consider anyone else but ourselves. I think it's the wrong message to be sending. He needs to change his language and tone. I don't have an issue with fair trade or improving our own country but I think there is a way in which you get that point across without sounding arrogant and self serving.

I don't like the delivery of his message at all. Words matter, perception of the United States matter, how we deal with other countries matters, and it's in our best interest to maintain and foster relationships with the world around us. I feel like he's intentionally alienating us and I don't agree with it.
