I don't buy expensive knives. I put them in the dishwasher and when they start showing signs of wear I get a new 50 dollar set.
I've been on the same set now for the past 5 years at least?

I usually hand wash my butcher block knives unless there was chicken all over them...Then I put them on the top rack.
I did notice some rust on a few (which I had to clean) but that's because my dishwasher blows and I don't want to replace it until I redo the kitchen
I never heard you weren't supposed to put them in there though.

I've heard you aren't supposed to, but I do anyway because I'm lazy. I think they say it dulls them? I've never noticed a difference.

Same here. My DH used to manufacture cutlery & flatware. I won't use any detergents with citrus ingredients either.

A nay that everybody does anyway. But you can sharpen your dishwasher dull knives easily on the unglazed bottom edge of an ordinary ceramic mug. Just run the knife edge along it at about a 20 degree angle several times and voila!

I don't put my steak knives in the dishwasher because they have wooden handles and they splinter. Otherwise, yay.

It depends on whether they are dishwasher safe or not. Sometimes very good knives are specially marked as NOT dishwasher safe, so then definitely not. The handles will usually get destroyed if you put them in. Check the box when you buy them.
