Goldendoodle or bernadoodle puppy?
Does anyone know a reputable breeder of a standard size goldendoodle or bernadoodle. We are looking to purchase a pup. We really love these type of dogs.

Goldendoodle or bernadoodle puppy?
I had a goldencocker AND found her at a rescue group and adopted her. Would you consider looking to adopt instead of buy :)

I wonder if they can even recommend one? The designer dog thing is kind of questionable, and I wonder if you can really guarantee that breeders do not have "puppy mill genetics." I mean I don't think they are even listed as an official breed, are they? It just seems like a lot of money to pay, so you know what your mixed dog is.
I totally get wanting a certain breed, and I see the point of view of going to a reputable breeder, but I don't think that exists with designer dogs.

There are definitely reputable breeders of goldendoodles and bernadoodles. It is true that they are not AKC recognized but there are many people who breed and raise the dogs humanely. I do not want a dog from a puppy mill or from a breeder who does not raise the dogs in home and the parents are not family pets. I've found many breeders all over the country I was just trying to see if I can find someone who has personal experience. Our vet did not know of any local breeders but gave us one from Ontario but that is very far looking for something in the US.

I would join a Facebook page of owners of these breeds and ask around. You definitely may have better luck getting someone reputable and closer by posting there in comparison to this site.

Re: Goldendoodle or bernadoodle puppy?
My mom has 2. One was from a breeder in Connecticut. He is an f-1 (mom was a poodle/dad was a lab). Fantastic dog. Great personality.
The second was a rescue from Pennsylvania. He was abused. Had some issues at first with trust but he is also a great dog. I can ask for the rescue group and breeder if you'd like

Re: Goldendoodle or bernadoodle puppy?
I just came across a shelter that has goldendoodle pups. Saw the listing today, the shelter is in NJ though so not sure if they would have restrictions on someone in LI adopting.
My MIL has a goldendoodle dog and he's a real hyper guy, so much so that he needs to be behind a gate when my boys and i visit her 'cus the dog will climb all over the boys.

Re: Goldendoodle or bernadoodle puppy?
My friend just got a golden doodle from a breeder in PA. They drove to pick her up. I can get the info if you'd like.
Editing to add add it was a breeder her friends had used before and was very reputable. Not random.

We have a labradoodle from an incredible local breeder. The dogs are all raised in homes he calls guardian homes, he breeds Australian labradoodles. If interested message me and I'll send you the info. They're recognized by the Australian labra association of America. Great disposition, etc.

Listen, I get what you are saying, but if a "reputable" breeder is not AKC recognized, they really have no guidelines to follow.
I learned my lesson after I bought a British Shorthair from a "reputable" breeder. The kitten died from FIP a month later. FIP can happen to any breeder any time, but it was the way that we were treated after where the difference lies. We went to them and told them what happened. They treated us like $hit and told us that we caused the kitten's death. We tried to contact an AKC (for cats, you get the idea) organization and club here. This breeder was not a member of anything like that. She should have never bred that mother cat again, but she did.
My point is that without anything AKC recognized, you will have no further action to take if something goes wrong. There is no quality check for the breed and temperament. I'm not sure how one can say "reputable" if they are breeding and no one is doing a quality / genetic control, TBH. There are no guidelines.
With this situation, I'd just rescue a golden doodle because they tend to be given up because the buyer doesn't get the qualities (calm temperament) that they want. Because surprise, surprise there is no AKC guidelines for this mutt.
I bought a British Shorthair from another breeder with full qualifications, respected by local organizations here etc. I have also rescued two cats and have flown them around the world with my moves, so I have also adopted. I felt better about getting a purebred cat here because they do not have as big of a problem as the US has. I'm not sure if I would get a purebred from a breeder again.
You can't get a designer dog from a "reputable" breeder.

I don't think she is saying that exactly.
There is responsible breeding with real breeds. By having real breeders that show a real passion for that particular breed and is concerned with genetics ensures that the breed won't die out. It's a hobby-- if done correctly and you can pay for it. A real breeder does not make much money at all. A real breeder shows their animals because they love the breed.
It's a completely different argument of real breeders and shelters.
A Goldendoodle "breeder" is not a real breeder. They are mixing two different animals to essentially make a mutt. And getting about $2,000 for a breed that doesn't exist.
A Goldendoodle is not a real breed. Thus adding to the pet overpopulation problem in the US.
If the Goldendoodle turns into a real breed, then I might think otherwise. But as of now there are no official guidelines for them.

Re: Goldendoodle or bernadoodle puppy?
At this time, Goldendoodles are not recognized as a distinct breed by the American Kennel Club (AKC), the United Kennel Club (UKC), the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) or any other widely-recognized all-breed purebred dog registry.
They are still only considered designer dogs.
And I will never understand paying up to $2000 for a dog that isn't considered a purebred.
But if it's something you must have. Please do your homework. Know about F1, F1B. when breeding.
I know someone that has one. Like any other dog she can be sweet but definitely has her moments. Has snapped at me a few times and actually broke skin once.
If at all possible look into a rescue.

Re: Goldendoodle or bernadoodle puppy?
Wow I cannot believe some of these responses. My husband and I have ALWAYS rescued from North Shore and we donate every year. We just had to put our 15 year old rescue boy down last month. He was a adopted from NSAL and we gave him a great life.
Now my girls really want a doodle. Our friends have 2 and they just love them. I understand that these dogs are not AKC but there are many breeders who do follow codes of ethics even though they are not AKC dogs. I do not consider someone who breeds and sells a golden or bernadoodle a puppy mill if they are breeding their dogs in the same way a reputable AKC breeder is breeding their animals. This is the reason I was looking for a first hand experience.

Exactly! Every time you shop vs adopt two dogs die. The dog you could have adopted and the dog that could take his place in a shelter.
If you're patient you can definitely find the breed you want via a rescue!

Sorry for your loss
But you won't be able to find a "breeder" since there isn't a breed. There are no "breed" standards to follow. A "doodle" isn't a breed; it's a mutt, sorry.
ETA: there is no code of ethics for a non-AKC breed, sorry.

We will continue to look through a rescue. As I said many times in this post we have always gotten all our pups through NSAL.
Thanks for letting me know I will killing 2 dogs if I buy one. That is just insane. If I didn't get a dog at all would those same 2 dogs die? I will continue to support the NSAL and put my money towards shelter animals. This shaming of someone who is looking to buy an animal from a breeder is just uncalled for.

Goldendoodle or bernadoodle puppy?
For all of you who think that you bought your dog fro a reputable breeder in PA, congrats on really buying a puppy mill dog. The amish are known for that.
If for whatever reason you need to have this one particular breed, look into rescue groups specifically for them. These days there a recue groups for practically every breed there is.

Amish country is the #1 place for puppy mills. It's their livelihood and it's repulsive. Please do not ever buy an animal from anyone Amish.
