Families of 5- how do you travel?
Do you use timeshares when you travel? some are max capacity at 4. But that limits certain places to stay.
We have 3 kids so it just seems silly that we can't throw the 3 kids in 1 room together.
I feel like when I put in 4 people, there are tons of options for a 2 bedroom. But I put in 5, and it dwindles. lol.
Even hotels... do you really get 2 adjoining rooms? or stay in places that have a suite?

You need to check the children policy of the hotel. Some of them might not count all your children towards the occupancy. My children are little, so I wouldn't mind staying with 2 double beds and a pack n play, although a little extra space of a suite is nice.
I don't know anything about timeshares.

I call up the hotel directly to ask about 2 adults and 3 small children to a room. Usually it's fine, you just can't have a third adult. But we generally will stay in rooms that have 2 queens and a pull out sofa, rooms which actually state they accommodate 5 to 6 people. It does reduce our options but I do find the room more accommodating for our larger family. I do not like rooms with double beds.
ETA I know nothing about timeshares. I prefer to stay in suites if there in my budget.

Re: Families of 5- how do you travel?
We just became a family of 5 and booked our first trip. We rented a beach villa that has a kitchen. I think we will always be getting a suite. Many resorts have 1, 2 and 3 bedroom accommodations. Our friends with 3+ kids seem to often rent houses but I personally prefer the amenities that a resort offers.
I don't think a regular room with work for us anymore since the baby wakes up at night. She will definitely wake up the boys.

Re: Families of 5- how do you travel?
It depends on the duration of the trip. Some hotels don't mind having 3 kids as long as there's only 2 adults. Sometimes I will only put in 2 adults and 2 kids and won't add the other one. Some don't care since it's not a per person fee. Not the most comfortable but it works. For longer trips we need at least 2 bedrooms and usually end up renting a house/apartment. We're going to Cancun in July and we will be staying at my MIL timeshare which will be a 2 bedroom suite.

Re: Families of 5- how do you travel?
We aren't a family of five, but I have a 15 YO SD (who lives with us) and she often brings a friend due to the age difference between her and our DS who is 6.
I would say your approach would be different depending on your sleeping arrangements and the type of hotel.
For example, when the five of us go to Hershey we usually do the Country Inn and Suites, where DH, DS and I sleep in the king bed in the master bedroom and SD and her friend sleep on a pullout in the living room. I have to say only 4 occupants when I book though.
Recently when we've been doing Disney/Florida we have rented a 1-2 bedroom suite in a timeshare. The friend doesn't come, but the 2br can sleep up to 8 I think, so we spread out and DSD has her own space. We usually use my in law's TS but we have also just rented online (they're inexpensive due to high supply in Orlando/Kissimmee.)
Spring Hill Suites also are inexpensive and have king beds with pull out couches.

Re: Families of 5- how do you travel?
We just had to book a cruise a year and a half out to get a family suite and paying through the nose for it. Finding it is super expensive to travel with 5! I'm seeing a lot of Disney vacations in the future because they are so accommodating.

Marriott hotel families have not blinked an eye when we book a room and come with our family of 5. That's the way we have been going. Our kids are all young.
Yes, cruises are a lot more and they force you to get 2 rooms (essentially there are just a few that accommodate 5).

Re: Families of 5- how do you travel?
I was wondering about this as we are soon to be a family of five!
Our last two trips we got a one bedroom villa and a one bedroom hotel suite. I'm assuming that will be the way we will have to do it - one or two bedrooms, villas, suites, timeshares, house rentals, two connecting rooms when the kids get older. We already want the extra room with just two kids, let alone with soon adding a third. I also really like having extra space, kitchen and laundry.

Re: Families of 5- how do you travel?
We are only a family of 4 but we often bring other people with us or I do trips with just mom's and kids. Mostly I stay in 2 bedroom timeshare units where the occupancy will range from 6-10. Admittedly, we often have more people. We either bring an air mattress/sleeping bags or stick 3 kids in a bed instead of 2. We always make it work.
