While I do understand that school being closed makes it hard for working parents, if the roads are not safe for students and staff to make it to the schools that has to be the first priority. Exactly for me and my child we will be no more safe than if schools were opened. I have to go to work and I have to take her out of the house if she doesn't have school. So we'll be on the roads regardless.

My husband and I just drove around... and unless there is a miracle... I doubt there will be
The streets by me are barely plowed and I can't see a bus being able to turn around the corners.
Sunrise hwy service road going to Brookhaven hospital was a mess...

We closed tomorrow, and the reasons have nothing to do with the current snow. It can be plowed. We closed because it is turning very cold and everything is turning to ice. Also due to high winds, they are worried about drifts covering roads. (We are in a pretty rural area.) It is a matter of safety. And yes businesses should offer the chance to work from home if it is unsafe as well.

why can LI not efficiently remove snow?
I live upstate in a suburban area. We got 9 inches of snow today - first notable storm in 2 years. The plow just came by - you can literally see the pavement - third pass today. My sister lives in Levittown and has seen 1 plow?!?! I just don't get it. It snows on LI every single year why do they not have better snow removal.
I will say that up here they really encourage people to work from home if possible, which reduces the number of cars on the road. They also do not allow overnight street parking during the winter in my town. Cities issue snow emergencies and limit street parking to enable more efficient plowing.
We're suppose to go down to LI tomorrow to meet my new nephew so I hope the roads are better by 7/8 pm.

I have to say where I live, in the Town of Islip, they plowed so well there is barely snow on my road. The plows came by a lot and I live on a side street in a development so it's not like it's a main road. Despite that, schools are closed but I figure it's because of the ice.

I disagree. People should be at work. Clear the flucking roads and then there is no safety issue. For what I pay in taxes alone it should cover salt for the entire town of hempstead.
In the city, sanitation salivates over snow. They clear the roads, which means the kids can go to school and the parents can go to work. No one bats an eye. Because that is how you have a functional society.
Here, no one wants to do anything. Sanitation (or whoever clears the damn snow out here, I don't even know, they might be mythical creatures because I've NEVER SEEN THEM but I highly doubt they're freaking volunteers) doesn't want to go to work. So now, NO ONE can go to work. Which I get the school employees love but like 2% of LI doesn't work in schools. I know, I know, low number but there's a lot of people on LI so that ends up being tons of people who work in places that aren't schools.
Vent over. Get me off this island.

I feel like if they could efficiently plow....down to the pavement...then ice wouldn't be an issue.
And treat the roads better too....salt.
When it snows by me (town of Islip) they plow ok but there is always a huge bumpy coating that they leave and it just refreezes until the next thaw and my neighborhood is.like the burma road...all bumpy....until it actually melts or rains.

The ironic part...we pay so much more in taxes than nyc...and their snow removal is amazing. And ours sucks

This is how it is in Levittown. The other problem is everyone parks in the street. They really need alt side of the street parking during snow emergencies to plow effectively.
I agree with you. Plow/Salt/sand the roads properly and then ice won't be an issue. By me, it's going to be below 0 tonight and I highly doubt anyone will close tomorrow (rural mountains, city, suburbs).

At the height of any storm, it is hard to keep the roads clear when there are a lot of cars on the road. So, ideally people would stay home - especially when it's snowing 1+ inches per hour. Overnight though I really feel like they should be able to properly treat the roads.

I'm in Nassau/north shore and we are open tomorrow but a delayed start. At least on my street anyway it doesn't look bad. I saw plenty of cars driving by ever since mid afternoon.

I respect those who are busting their butts as well. But whoever is in charge isn't doing what they're supposed to be doing if they are unable to sufficiently salt major roads before rush hour tomorrow. It stopped snowing at 5pm.
