Another Bat Mitzvah question - update

DH has an old friend who he never really sees anymore. I met him once, very very briefly (We ran into him in the neighborhood - just said hi kind of thing). DH's friend is a rabbi. He sent us an invitation to his son's upcoming Bat Mitzvah. The invitation has only the name of the family (parents and son), date and ADDRESS of the Bat Mitzvah - not the name of where it is, just the address. I googled the address and it's a temple.

The invitation is for a Sunday, at 5:30 pm. When I looked on the website of the Temple, it says they have a service every Sunday at 7:30 pm. So, is the invitation for the ceremony or the reception? I would just like to know what we are attending before we get there Chat Icon

UPDATE: DH spoke to his friend and the invite (which we did get in the mail), is just for the party. I don't know when or where the ceremony is, but now I at least know what to expect Chat Icon

Thanks for all the info/advice!

Re: Another Bat Mitzvah question

It would be helpful to see the website to have a better idea of the type of temple it is. Is it a bar mitzvah (boy) or bat mitzvah (girl)? That may also make a difference depending on what branch of Judaism it is.
I'm glad to help you figure it out, but i need more info since a bar/bat mitzvah usually takes place on a Saturday on Shabbat. They are sometimes held on other days that Torah is read.
PM me and I'll see what I can figure out for ya.

ETA: what are the buzzwords on the invite? Does it say something like : "Joe will be called to the Torah on....." or
"Join us as we celebrate joe becoming a bar mitzvah on...."
Phrases like that mean it's the ceremony.

Re: Another Bat Mitzvah question

if its for his son its a BAR mitzvah. Bat mitzvahs are for girls.

I do invitations for these a lot. Often times there are people invited to the CEREMONY only; there is usually a kiddush luncheon to follow.

is there a reply card with it? B/c often times I do reply cards that have ALL the weekend events on it for the out of towners, then "in towners" who are invited to ceremony / luncheon only; then intowners who are invited to ceremony and the reception.

it can get very complicated.

We only received the invite by text - a pic of the actual invite. He said we should expect the "real" invite in the mail, but haven't received it yet - and thinking we're not going to. Yes, we are actually invited - DH says they are a little "scattered" and this doesn't surprise him.

We've been to other bat/bar mitzvahs (yeah - I should have written Bar) and went to the ceremony, followed by lunch and then the party later - but this is for a Sunday at 5:30 - so def no lunch after. Just a little confusing.

a text invite for a Bar Mitzvah, oy

5:30 seems late in the day, is this a reform, conservative, etc family?

Re: Another Bat Mitzvah question

I just asked DH (raised Jewish, had a bar mitzvah) and he claims he's never heard of anyone being invited to the ceremony and not the party because that would be tacky (said it would be like being invited to a wedding ceremony and then not the reception).

In my gentile opinion, the text invite alone would make me Chat Icon

ETA he also said he's never heard of a lunch after so he might not be the best source of information.

Yeah - it was a picture of the actual invite, sent by text. The message in the text said the actual invite would be coming in the mail, but I do t think that s happening. I'll try to have DH get some more info

I'm not sure, as far as reform etc goes (not sure what each one means), but I know they are very strict with following their religious practices

It might just be the party, lots of people have the party on a different day, on a Sunday especially if they are more observant. My service and party was on a Sunday bc my fathers family is orthodox, but the service wasin the morning and party in the afternoon.

IF they are very religious, yes late in the day would be normal, because they would wait for after sundown for the the party etc to begin.

People do attend the temple part and not the party, and the other way too
like the other poster Chat Icon is how I feel about the way you were invited
