A legitimate question regardless of who you voted for

First - before you respond or read my post please take a look at all the threads on this board since Trump was elected.

Now - here is my question - is this going to go on for the next FOUR years? Every single thing Trump does or doesn't do are we going to have a thread where all those that didn't vote for him just go on and on with the same commentary over and over again. Are we going to have threads once a day directing questions at those that did vote for him - "legitimate questions" and then take the opportunity to get our daily frustrations out on whoever is dumb enough to respond (no one really does anymore so I guess those threads will stop soon).

I know I can jut stop coming on the boards (and I hardly do anymore) but, I've been on LiFamilies a long time and there was a time when I found it to be a helpful resource and forum where I learned and grew as a person from having strangers from all different walks of life provide feedback on different topics. I hate the direction this board is going in.

I mean honestly - I'm not a big trump supporter but, HE WON - I know all the HIllary supporters (I'm not a Hillary fan either) are in shock and disbelief and it appears to give them comfort to have these nonsensical posts every day with the same stuff over and over again and the same likes etc. etc etc. but, really, isn't it time to grow up and move on? I hope you don't all do this IRL because this is the ONLY place I have seen this go on. NO ONE talks like this IRL and from an outside perspective it really doesn't come off well. I didn't post every time Obama did something that changed my life in a negative way. It's life. You hate trump - great, but he won so obviously millions of people agreed with him. He is now our President. And just like I dealt with Obama for years and years and watched thousands of dollars go down the drain thanks to him - I will deal with Trump.

Hopefully we can move forward from this. I thought this would have ended by now but I'm hoping it's not going to be the next four years of LIFamilies.

Re: A legitimate question regardless of who you voted for

This is why I was hoping admin (if they still exist) would come on here and make a politics board.

LIF is becoming what my FB feed was. But at least with FB, I just unfollowed all the people who constantly posted about politics - both R & D. Now that the election is over, I refollowed everyone and my feed is back to the way it used to be. LIF doesn't have an unfollow button, so having a politics board would be amazing.

Maybe move these posts over to another board that doesn't get much traffic? It's the same posters pretty much. You all can talk amongst yourselves without clogging the boards with these political posts.

I miss old LIF

I don't know. I hope it goes back to normal. I have said this before, and I will say it again. This whole thing reminds me of the news hyping up a hurricane. Then the hurricane gets downgraded to a tropical storm and then that gets downgraded to just another rainy day. But there are those people that will be glued to the TV and running to the supermarket. Stocking up with a year's worth of groceries in case doomsday comes. There are those people that just LIVE for these situations. They love the drama of it. They never even realize that the news was just hyping it up for ratings. I think that there's a lot of that going on.

I am sure I will be attacked by people claiming there is REAL FEAR. They have a ton to be afraid of. Frankly, there are tons of things you can be afraid of every day but it will ruin your life to live like that.

Its a monumental change for our country. People are scared, people don't know what to think, people want to talk about it. Its totally normal. I would rather read about politics than about how much to gift at a wedding.

Re: A legitimate question regardless of who you voted for

Its totally normal and it does not bother me if I have to scroll through several posts on politics in order to reach one that I want to read.

Lets face it Trump is a very different president elect to any other one we have had - at least in my lifetime. He incites a reaction from most people be it a good one or a bad one.

You cannot turn on any news station without them discussing him as he is choosing his cabinet.

As people have said on other subjects if you know its a political post and you don't want to read it then don't open it. If you are afraid that other topics are not being discussed then you should bring them up.

Re: A legitimate question regardless of who you voted for

I was a HRC supporter and I do not like Trump so I'll state that first. If this was McCain or Romney sure I wouldn't be happy but I would have moved on Election night. I was fine when Bush won a second term. Trump in my eyes is dangerous man. He won an election by bringing people together in the name is hate. He has publicly made racist statements and I believe sexually assaulted women. He made fun of a disabled man and that is something I cannot move past. I don't have trust in a man to lead the free world when he spends his time tweeting about bullsh*t to avoid and cover up his conflicts of interest. For me I have to continue to question his every move. We the people need to hold him accountable. As far as LIF goes if you don't want to read a post you can always skip it. I don't comment on things I read all the time.

Re: A legitimate question regardless of who you voted for

I can only speak to part of what you said because I have not started any of the "legitimate question threads" because I don't care what Trump supporters think right now.

I will speak to your "grow up and move on" comment.

I think part of being a grown up is working towards social justice and helping the vulnerable.

If you've lost money under Obama that is unfortunate. I don't know your personal situation, but I do know that the people who are about to get screwed over big time are some of the most vulnerable among us - the people who TRULY cannot take the hit they are going to get. I want to do all that I can to help them.

I said this in another thread, but these conversations are both fueling and running in tandem with some really great social action. Trump supporters might not see this because it's just not going to show up in their social media feeds.

So yes, there is fear. However, there is also wonderful mobilization.

Your disdain is noted and dismissed. I can only speak for myself, but I will continue to post whatever I need to post to fight what I believe to be an insidious administration and its attack on the poor, the sick, the elderly, women, Muslims, LGBT, etc. I welcome anyone who cares to join me. No matter who they voted for.

I would be in full support of this. I think a political board is a great idea! Does anyone know how to contact administrators to see if this is a possibility?

Re: A legitimate question regardless of who you voted for

I started the "legitimate question" thread, so I'll respond.

1. I dismiss all the disdain as well. Grown ups can discuss things rationally. Grown ups care what goes on in the world, and grownups speak respectfully to one another. Those who respond to everything with hostility, tout their own ignorance, and expect the boards to conform to their every desire need to grow up.

2. It's actually not the same stuff over and over. I was not a rabid HRC supporter, and I readily accepted Trump's win and prepared for him to act with the polish, work ethic, and professionalism that all of his predecessors have (both parties).

When he acted in a startlingly unprofessional way and displays immaturity, cruelty, and laziness that could endanger the country and the world, I have reacted to each thing anew. Not rehashing anything old. NOT insulting people who voted for him. Actually...not insulting anyone. It's called being a grown up.

3. I am proud of the vast majority of us who speak respectfully and sad for the people who are so hostile and defensive that in order to open up real, moving-forward dialogue, I HAD to preface my "question" with the word "legitimate." SAD.

But the truth is that yelling the same baseless accusations while refusing to deal with the present--with what is in front of us...is going to mean that some of us interact--on here and IRL--join hands across the aisle and move forward intelligently, having been taught to communicate and react maturely when we see extreme things.

Re: A legitimate question regardless of who you voted for

Every election, the boards are filled with political posts, even 4 years ago, 8 years ago, etc... The threads back then were vicious. Much worse than the current threads, but TPTB were very active, and deleted the worst of the threads, so there is very little evidence of it, unless you were following the thread and remember it.

Every December, the boards are filled with Christmas posts....

Every major tragedy, the boards are filled with posts about that....

It's all that's in the news feeds lately, so even if you try to find non-political stories, it's not easy...

I try to make posts about non-political topics, but they get very little traffic. Even my "positive news" thread. The political posts are what's keeping this board active right now.

A Political forum has been brought up every election, and TPTB repeatedly say they won't do it, so I don't see it happening now.

Agree.

Considering that only the first 10 or so threads on the first page are active, and it's been that way for a long time now, these political threads are the only thing keeping this forum alive. As I've said before, without the political threads all you'd have on these boards is the occasional wedding gift post every few weeks. It's easy enough to skip the threads that don't interest you and allow others to post what interests them.

Re: A legitimate question regardless of who you voted for

I'm not a Trump supporter and have moved on. Not because I don't want to fight for certain rights I believe in but because I feel it was affecting my sanity.
My head hurts from all the political posts. I come to LIF to get away from political posts on facebook. But now its here too.

Honestly I rather talk about nice things.

Where the best place I can I donate old toys and coats too?

Or maybe where we can volunteer? Hospitals, Nursing Homes, Animal shelters, Soup Kitchens.

We can talk about someone who is currently fighting Cancer, and how they could use some extra prayers.

Or how many lives a day heroin takes away.

How Wonderful it is that So many streets around long island back our police officers and tied with blue ribbon.

Also I encourage everyone to do one random act of kindess. It feels so good!!
I recently went to lunch with my mom and we paid for a WW2 vet and his wifes lunch without his knowledge. It felt so good!! I also saw a homeless man sitting in Burger king with his head down and bought him a $50.00 gift card to burger king so he can get food. He Cried.
These are the things that make me the happiest to talk about. These are the things that make me believe that no matter who is president we can still do good in small ways, even if they go unnoticed.

I also want to say May all your Holidays be filled with Love, Kindness and Hope.

Because Donald trump is not normal. THIS (what is happening and has happened in the past 3 weeks) IS NOT NORMAL. And if we become silent and stop talking about what is happening, it becomes normal.

Everything I would respond has been written, so I won't repeat it, but if you enjoy LIF but don't like all the political threads, why not start some other ones? there is plenty of room for any thoughts/questions etc that anyone wants to post about.

As others have already said, this is not a normal transition. I feel like much of this has been said, by me and others, so I am not going to repeat it. But in a nutshell, there are lots of concerns about lots of issues. My husband is an economics professor who is anxious and skeptical about the impact Trump's plans will have on that aspect of all of our lives. As long as there are outrageous actions on the part of Trump and his administration, there are going to be people here talking about it. And that's important.

I will not be silenced - I was a 2002 LIW bride so around a long time

Never got into politics or paid much attention or got worked up about it.

As others said this is a different time.

We cant normalize Trump which is why you may think its abnormal to see so many posts

Sure i can enjoy life and focus on other things and try not to worry

I will not be silenced - not here or FB or IRL

And it's good to stay informed and educated, no matter what your views are. Look at history. In purges, they always go after or insult the academics, the educated, and the press. Because they know what's going on, and they are why others will know what's going on.

I mistrust any government that is not open to intellectuals and to the press. Because history.

We need to keep up with what is going on. Keep learning, and keep forming opinions.
