Museum of natural history

Thinking of going Saturday with my boys. They love the movie Night at the Museum.
Any suggestions what to do and where to eat nearby?

Thanks!

We have been to Big Daddy's and it's cute. We also sometimes eat in the cafeteria at the museum but it's pretty gross! We've also been to Alice's Tea Cup but I wouldn't bring boys there. My girls liked it but I don't think it would be my son's cup of tea!

I don't have any answers to your question but check with your library to see if they have any passes!

Admission to the museum is actually free. You pay a suggested admission price to support the museum when you are entering. It's a donation to the museum. So you don't need a pass unless you want to try to get into a special exhibit for a discount, which I am unsure if they even offer.

We frequent the museum a lot.

Depends on what your DS's like and their age. With DS we do the dinosaurs, the area with the blue whale, the american animals and the planetarium, sometimes the movie there (it can be loud and dark for little ones). I have eaten at the cafeteria but I don't really like it. If I remember well, there was a Pizzeria Uno close by, but I don't know if it is still there. I'm sure you could find nice places.

You can ask if they have special exhibitions or things for kids. Once at the Met I asked and they had a map for kids to look around the different exhibitions and search for stuff. Have fun!

Oh I know. I just personally feel weird not paying the suggested donation lol. I feel like they'd judge me or something lol.

Oh and yes as far as what to do in the museum, definitely the big whale room, the dinosaurs, space. Honestly the whole museum doesn't take that long. Don't do the planetarium with young children. they will be scared. the 3d movies can be cute or boring depending on what's showing.

Also, if they love night at the museum you can actually book an overnight to sleep in the museum. I did it with my son's boy scout troop a few years ago. I think I slept about 4 minutes that night but he had a blast.

lol I feel the same way, but now I feel I can brave it and give a couple of dollars for admission. It helps to know that hey have lots of sponsors (and that we actually wouldn't visit the exhibitions that require to get the full admission fee).

I really don't think they do. I used to go to the Met a lot when I was a student and their is some student discount but I think I still paid nothing and went in for free every time. I think they are used to it. And the way I look at it is you will never see them again anyway. the suggested donation is pretty steep. I'm sure a lot of people working the admissions desk wouldn't be able to afford to pay the full suggested donation for a family of four.

You can download the guide to make sure you see all the exhibits from the night at the museum. It's a great way to see Some of the more popular exhibits from the movie!

We are members and go a lot. There is a crocodile exhibit going on with live crocodiles that my kids really enjoyed. Also the giant titanosaur. Go to the discovery room as soon as you get there-it is on the first floor near the giant canoe-they give out a limited number of timed tickets so you can go see other stuff and come back. Shake shack is on 77th/Columbus, right across from museum. Seating is tight but weather is supposed to be nice on Saturday-you could take it to go and eat outside!

I guess I look at things differently. I feel that people should pay the admission suggested donation unless they really can't afford it. Donations are what keep museums running. I feel like the people who reap the benefit should assist in supporting them.

I don't know everyone's financial situation, so I'm not looking to judge people. I just feel that the majority of people that can seem to afford to spend niceties like starbucks, going to the movies, the bar, out to eat, insert random activity here... can afford to give to the museum when they go.

We love to go a lot too. I think the suggested donation is $22 per adult and $12.50 per child. Sometimes we give more, sometimes, less. It really depends on the day. No one behind the desk bats an eyelash.
