Yes, the people HAVE spoken

Out of curiosity, what about people who voted for trump due to economic reasons? Regardless of whether or not it's accurate and will happen, he outlined a very specific plan for his first 100 days in office (npr published it), that would greatly benefit people who may need extra money in their pocket on a day to day basis. Many of the calculators floating around on the internet showed that trump would put money back in people's hands, while Clinton would keep things the same financially for many people.

Does the real need to have money for food, health insurance, shelter make someone a racist?

The race was even at different income levels.

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/11/08/us/politics/election-exit-polls.html?_r=0

It's very easy to look past some of the things he said if you aren't those things.

Something else tipped this election and it wasn't the economy. Frankly, I think that's an excuse whether one realises it or not. His campaign was based on xenophobia and other things. To look past that is a luxury. He gave his supporters a voice and they are using it. Maybe it wasn't the way he wanted them to use it, but who knows? He never told them to stop...

No of course it doesnt and its not fair to assume that. However, there is a responsibility by Trump, his administration and maybe supporters to truly unite America and make it clear that they will not tolerate hate of groups due to their race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, relgion etc

You're correct,, the people have spoken, but they have NOT been heard.

Hillary won the popular vote. Thank god the majority of voters are informed enough to make rational choices.

This. If you're not in one of the groups that has been called out or threatened during his entire campaign, you can ignore it because you have that privilege.

As I stated earlier in the thread, the womens vote was right on par with how women voted (within 1%) in the 2012 election. If xenophobia and racism were to blame, we would have seen a huge shift in the womens vote too. The gender gap in this election was the highest it's been in 6 decades. That means men (of all races) went out and voted primarily for Trump. That does not make half the country racist or xenophobic. It's sexism. Plain and simple. It's a shame more women aren't wising up to it.

Yes, there's that, too (honestly he's so many things that I can't keep up). But when you look at the race demographic that also fits in. There are so many things, especially in that inforgraphic, that I don't think anyone can explain it all exactly.

And until January, it's still Obama's job to calm people and expect his and Hillary's supporters to stop creating chaos b/c they didn't get their way.

Its incredibly patronizing to say people are creating chaos because they "didn't get their way".

People are SCARED. I'm not scared personally. I am white and straight. Can you not understand that people of color, people of different religions and people who are LGBT are seriously AFRAID of what might happen to them? You can go to sleep at night knowing that your marriage won't be made null, that the future vice president didn't want to jail you for applying for a marriage license. You can go to sleep at night knowing that you can leave and re-enter the country freely, and that any relatives you may have overseas can come visit you at any time without fear. You can go to sleep at night knowing you won't be deported. A little empathy would go a long way. Nothing like this happened when GWB was elected. People are TERRIFIED and rightly so.

No, I can't to be honest. Because if you watch the videos of the protesters, they are college kids who have nothing better to do than throw a hissy fit. Hardly a mixed group representing the population in those protests. It was WHITE college students that were the overwhelming majority.

Some of us white folks (although I'm technically half Hispanic but white passing) actually feel morally obligated to stand up to the message of hate being spread by self-proclaimed trump supporters and trump himself who is complicit by not doing anything to stop it.

Not sure what you were watching (probably fox news), but all the protests that I saw in NYC were a mix of ethnicities. To say you can't even have empathy for the people that truly have a reason to be scared is just cold and soulless.

I cannot understand the vote for economics.

If you are able to overlook the racism for extra dollars you're very lucky.

I'd have more respect for people who voted for him and said, look I'm at breaking point, on the brink, so as much as it makes me ill to vote for a racist misogynist I had to.
Not people wiling to overlook this tickets attitude to other people's basic human rights for a couple hundred dollars a month and are walking around saying this is a great day for America. The country is divided. Nothing great about that.

The Bush family are life long republicans and at least had the self respect to stand up for what they believe in.

Money is money. It's worth nothing if your family is torn apart.

I see so many hypocrites on my own Facebook feeds. People I know personally who mock others often for their looks, etc, then have a problem with Trump. People who are racist in their own right or judgmental towards others who are different than them (looks, thoughts, etc). But they defend the Trump protestors. As evidenced on these political threads as well, most of the "vocal" ones are the least tolerant and respecting of other's views. So call me a skeptic, but I don't buy many of the protestors (not all, but many) are championing for other's rights.

I agree. Trump's economic philosophies more closely align with mine as a registered Republican. As I sit here today, I would say I'll most likely be in a better financial position under him in many ways. However, I just could not look my daughter, or my son for that matter, in the eye and vote for him based on the rest of his beliefs and his behavior.

That said, I think the hate on both sides needs to calm down. While I will admit I was scared the other night when he was elected, I am far more scared at the reaction to it on both sides. This country needs to come together again as that is what will truly "Make America Great Again"

Re: Yes, the people HAVE spoken

what is going to happen to people of different color or LGBT community under Trump??
So supporting Hillary is any better? She supports countries that throw gay/lesbian people off cliffs??

OMG...all this back and forth needs to stop.
