Reading Benchmark Assesment test

Has anyone else's child take this?

DS is in 1st grade and he is taking this starting tomorrow - it will be given over the course of 3 days.

A pre-test packet was sent home last week to 'help' them and us understand what the test will look like.

I did it with DS and it is just ridiculous! They want them to write in sentence using'key details' from the passages.

Ummm, DS just started learning how to write a complete sentence the proper way and even that is phonetically spelled and hard to decipher. They are still learning how to spell, so I don't understand what the point of having them write is for.

They are not clear on how letters work all together. DS was trying to write the word 'dragon' and he wrote it with 'jargin'. I did not correct him on anything because that will not help him come this week.

I just think its stupid the pressures these kids have to take on so early on. We are in the 5th week of school (one of which was half days) and he has taken 8 tests already!! He has 2 more on top of the assessment test this week and 1 lined up for next week.

Re: Reading Benchmark Assesment test

Yes. Both of my kids took this test. The way of thinking is that by first grade a child should be able to write a simple sentence, and even a paragraph. The spelling does not have to be perfect. They are are graded using a five silo system. Can they answer the question? What does their hand writing look like? Do they write complete sentences? Do they write a paragraph? Is the paragraph coherent? Does the paragraph answer the questions? Can they read and understand what was asked of them?

Reading Benchmark Assesment test

I felt so bad for him. He could not fall asleep last night because he was worried about not understanding what to do. Then this morning he started to panic saying that he will not have enough time to write out any sentences because he is too slow at writing out words.

He is 6!!! and just started with tests and he already feels like this??? I told him to just try his best. If he has to leave things blank then leave them blank, that we would be proud of his efforts not how much he finishes or gets right.

I hate common core!!!!

Yes!!! Especially with kids who tend to worry about things (like my DS). He has always been a worrier, so I am on edge about how he will handle things as he gets older and the pressure really starts to get put on him.

My DD is a worrier too. I always make sure to tell her that she should try her best and as long as she does Mommy is happy. She's not a score on a test. I honestly hate all the pressure put on these kids especially so young.

My son is in first and they do a star assessment for reading. It's all computerized so I assume they don't have to write sentences... Our school didn't tell us anything about it prior to administering, the results came home in his folder on Tuesday which was surprising.

Wow I read these poss and wonder what districts they are. While I am sure my kids do assessments, they never have them prep, we don't hear about them. My kids also never had tests in kindergarten. Wonder if some districts push more than others, as do certain teachers.

I would be surprised if this is the case. My bet is all kindergarteners are taking math tests now. They probably just don't tell the kids they are tests, don't tell the parents and don't send them home. All the common core math programs - math in focus, go math etc. all have math tests in kindergarten. They take them at the end of every chapter and at the end of the year they will take a cumulative test that will be used to see who needs pull out services the following year. My district (which is probably the case in yours) doesn't refer to them as tests, doesn't tell the kids they are tests and the NEVER come home and the parents won't ever see them unless they know to ask about them. The same is true for the reading benchmark tests - given at the end of every unit and end of year for the same purposes in addition to the typical assesments.

All that said, I think it depends on the presentation - if the teacher doesn't stress the kids about these tests and the parents don't stress their kids and it is just presented as regular school work where the teacher is trying to figure out who knows what and how to help them (which is all it is at this age anyway) this stuff shouldn't cause anxiety. I think sometimes it's the parents that get crazy about the numbers and in turn cause the anxiety which is why I believe our district and lillykat's don't share. Honestly, and this it what I tell my kids - don't stress about these tests at this age - they don't mean anything other than the teacher trying to help to teach them. There is NO prize for 100 - you can get all 100's and no one cares. Same in the reverse. All just a part of learning.

Also, what you are describing about your son's abilities is TOTALLY typical at this age! The teachers aren't expecting much AT ALL at this point - but, through taking these things - your son will likely amaze you in how much he grows by the end of the year!

See to me though that isn't a test. Your child is not coming home prepping for it, they don't know it is a test. IMO that is not the same as being told your child will have a test on x day and the results will be shared. What you describe to me, is just a way for the teachers to know if your child is understanding the work. Yes I did ask. No the schools says no tests. But as I said not sure how that is really different from worksheets done in class for the teachers to see what they know. My district doesn't do "math tests" until 2nd. They do have spelling tests in 1st. But that is the first so called "tests" given in school. But I could be wrong but didn't you say our district tests sight words at the kindergarten screening? I know ours ones not.

The way my DS's teacher described it, with regular worksheets she does it on the smart board with them. Goes over each question, has the kid come up and circle answers, etc. Also, the assistant will walk around the class and help. With the tests, the assistant doesn't help, she doesn't do it on the smart board, if the kids ask for the answer she tells them she can't give it to them. She says the kids are not stressed out, she doesn't call it a test.

Re: Reading Benchmark Assesment test

In first grade she had to write 5 sentences about a topic 3 nights a week. two had to be on reading topics. Seemed normal to me. each sentence had to have 5 words in it minimum. Ironically, in 2nd grade they downgraded that to 3 sentences 5 days a week but required a drawing on each one (which I thought was slightly stupid).

Now in 3rd grade is when they do the assessments here. Actually her first will be just after we get back from vacation. hahaha good luck getting her to concentrate. But its only benchmarking. Our actual 3rd grade State Level exams are in the spring.

Texas, for the most part, opted out of Common Core. Though we use it for math which I love. That said, she is required at 3rd grade to read 40 books by the end of the year 10 for each 9 week period. She's currently reading a 293 page book to be completed by tonight and finished her last book which was 337 pages in 6 days. She has to write a one page report. After she's done with the current book she's on she wants to start on her next book which is 523 pages. Seriously??!!! who comes up with this crap? I mean I love reading but I never loved it at that age and sure as heck wasn't doing book reports in 3rd grade much less reading 200-300 page books in a week!! I just encourage her, which is all I can do.

But they put such darn high goals on these kids! She bought into the fact that a 300 page book counts as 3 books out of her 10. I have told her that's only because 100 pages count as a single book. So she can read 3 books or one big 300 page book. She chooses one big book. Crazy! As a woman who hated to read at her age, it's hard to knock it but crazy! Crazy, crazy!

Re: Reading Benchmark Assesment test

DD is in first and I haven't heard of this test.
She is really just learning to read.
Forgot about any comprehension.
And sentence writing- forget it- it still looks like it'sin greek.
The results be pretty funny if she had to take this test.
