Hurricane Matthew

DH's aunt, uncle, and cousins live on Merritt island and have been evacuated.

My sil, bil, and their kids are also on the space coast but far enough inland where they don't need to evacuate but they will be hit hard. They've boarded up their house.

I hope they and everyone who will be and already have been affected by this monster of a hurricane remain safe.

This one is really fcking scary.

My parents took a direct hit from Charlie in 2004 and I was there a day later for cleanup. It was like a warzone.

My mom was living in Deltona during Charlie. She said it sounded like a freight train coming over the top of them. No real damage to the house (just some roofing), but lots of trees down and they lost power for almost 3 weeks. She sold the house last year and told me last night she was so thankful that she isn't down there now (she lives in Georgia).

I have a lot of friends who are in the path of the storm and I'm really worried about them. The damage is going to be so bad.

I drove through Homestead, Florida, about a year after Hurricane Andrew hit. I couldn't believe it. There were either brand new buildings (just a few) or piles of rubble (a lot). There were no mature trees. They had planted some small palm trees. It looked like a wasteland.

This is a scary storm.

I have family in deltona, jensen beach, fort lauderdale and DH has family in edgewater and orlando (well a town close to orlando just can't think of the name), The edgewater family went to stay with the orlando family.

How can you find out what the evacuation zones are. My cousin in jensen beach is staying wondering if she was ordered to evacuate and is being an idiot and staying anyway

Same for my mom - she's inland (Rockledge) but still close enough to the beach. They have a generator from last time and boarded up the windows. I'm guessing we'll know tomorrow how bad it's going to be.

Hurricane Matthew

My in-laws are in Jupiter a few blocks from the beach, as of last night they weren't planning on evacuating. I told DH to call them this morning and try and convince them to leave while they could. He couldn't get them, so I'm hoping it means they boarded up and left.

Rockledge is where the family from Merritt island evacuated to! DH's cousin lives there. Sil and family live on viera/melbourne.

Hope your mom stays safe!!

All the meteorologists say it's too soon to tell what will happen with that at this point

My in laws called back and said they changed their minds about evacuating even though they are in a mandatory evacuation zone. Not to mention they are up there in age and MIL is not quick on her feet should they need to get out quick. They and the couple across the street (also in their 70's, who have a generator) have decided to ride the storm out together.

I told them they are crazy and should get out while they can, they are stubborn. They are in Palm Coast, between Daytona and St. Augustine and literally have a dock in the backyard.

So what does Mandatory Evacuation zone mean if you don't HAVE to go?

Like what is the difference between Voluntary and Mandatory Evacuations.... if people are staying anyway?

Sorry but this makes me so angry. They are in a mandatory evac zone and they are staying. They are putting their lives at risk and the lives of the police/fire who have to come rescue them!!!
Don't they realize that homes can be replaced but human life can't?????
I have friends doing the same thing. I just don't get it..

So scary, they should really evacuate. I lived down in Palm Bay (on the east coast) and we went through a Category 2 hurricane and it was CRAZY. The winds were howling, everything sounded like it was going to be ripped apart, palm tress were bending over to the ground..........it was no joke. This is a Category 4, I can't even imagine how much worse that is.

Better to be safe than sorry, homes can be replaced but your life cannot. I hope you can convince them to leave. Either way, hope they stay safe no matter what!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Hurricane Matthew

My in laws have a vacation condo in Jupiter .8 miles from the Atlantic. They are staying. We tried and tried to convince them back on Monday to fly home a week early. When they refused that, we tried to convince them to go with friends who left yesterday to go to a hotel in Fort Myers. Again, they refused. Their condo development is on the intercoastal waterway. There is nothing we can do, they are both grown adults in their 50's, but we are very worried about them. At this point we think they may still be stuck in their condo on Tuesday when they are supposed to fly home to NY. People are crazy. Just leave.

I found this:
Those who ignore mandatory evacuation orders should be prepared to be self-sufficient for the first 72 hours after a storm.

Utilities – electricity, water and phone service – could be damaged and unavailable for extended periods of time, and high winds and water could isolate those residents for long periods of time.

In addition, public safety officials will not risk lives to respond to emergency calls in mandatory evacuation areas during the storm.

OK yes I thought I heard someone on the news down there say if you ignore an evacuation order you can't expect first responders to help you.
makes sense

Re: Hurricane Matthew

We are in NE FL. We are not in an evac zone since there is theoretically no threat of flooding. We expect a category 4 to come through here. We have done all that we feel we can to keep safe. By this morning all hotels within 5 hours were booked so for many of us, especially the recent transplants, there is nothing for us to do but brave the storm in our homes. Lesson learned if there is a next time. Seasoned floridians knew to book hotel rooms just in case days ago.

Having stubborn parents I get it. But this is SO dangerous. Not only for them, but the PD, EMS that would have to come get them. Older people are so childish sometimes.

Ugh so I just found out that DH's cousin, her FH, and 18 yo son are staying behind even though their area is under mandatory evacuation and they're even shutting down the water. I wish they weren't so stubborn.

Hurricane Matthew

Just saw that Matthew is pulling farther from Broward & Palm Beach counties. It is still a very dangerous storm with high winds and storm surges, but it is not the catastrophic monster they thought it would be even just a couple of hours ago. At least for THIS PORTION of eastern Florida. I was just checking on the weather in Jupiter since that is where my in laws are and this is what I read. Not wonderful news, but hopefully makes some people feel even a tiny bit better if they have family or friends in the area.
