Switching to foward facing

My DD screamed until I bought a headrest mounted DVD player and put on Mickey Mouse Clubhouse or Baby Einsteins. Worked like a charm! I would NOT turn until at least 2!

Yes... It's not ideal. But the new recommendations are really new. My DS and DD were both forward facing before a year. Yes, we got into a car accident where the other car was totaled (she was texting and rear ended us). My kids in car seats didn't even wake up... And the older one was 18 mo front facing. With #3, I have her rear facing at over a year. I will do it for as long as I can...

I think a kid screaming, a mom reaching to give kid things, watching a kid in a baby mirror, giving kids food or talking on the phone is MUCH more dangerous as it causes distracted drivers more likely to get into accidents.

I just want to point out that most crashes are frontal crashes and frontal crashes are the ones where RF seats protect against internal decapitation. The body moves toward the point of impact in a crash. RF is thought to be best for all crashes, but especially front end crashes.

Switching to foward facing

I tried everything people mentioned in this post: mirror, iPad with videos and games, toys, drinks/food, sitting in the back, etc and nothing worked. It would turn into everyone in the car yelling, screaming, crying. It was definitely not a safe driving environment.

We frequently travel 3+ hours away from our house and honestly, the screaming was unbearable. I always thought I'd do Extended rearfacing and encourage everyone I know to do it, but I just couldn't handle his behavior on long drives. At 22 months, DH switched cars and installed DS' seat forward facing. We switched him in my car a few weeks later. I know this is not ideal, but we were desperate.

To the PP, see if you can put up with it a little longer. That's what we did.

Thank you everyone for your honest replies. Like I said I'm a huge advocate for rear facing as long as possible. She has a mirror back there, which I was told is a no no by the car seat inspector. She uses pacifiers but ends up throwing them and I do not want to pull over bc I feel like that's not safe either. Anything I give her, she ends up throwing and then screams even more bc she threw it! I do end up getting frustrated and yell and make the radio louder and I try so hard to tune it out, but it's not just s cry, it's like a blood curdling screech that goes right through me and it actually hurts my ears. That being said, I'm going to try and stick it out as long as I can. I was hoping to make it as long as DD1.

The don't switch until at least 2 is not a really new recommendation. It's been recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics since the early/mid 2000's and was officially adopted in their formal recommendations since 2010/2011.

Fwiw for others reading - foward facing before a year is illegal in every state as it specifically goes against the manufacturer limits of the seat.

Distracted driving is definitely dangerous as well. At 18 months I wouldn't switch though. The neck vertebrae are only beginning to fuse at 2 and aren't fully ossifed until closer to 6/8 years old.

To the OP - what seat do you have them rear facing in? Maybe it's the seat. Some are more of a "C" shape and a child prefers a straighter back. Some recline more then others, maybe they want to sit up more?

I don't know. I find nothing more distracting than a screaming child. I see both sides of the argument but if you're really that distracted I get why you would want to switch.

Rear facing is great- unless you're rear ended. We were rear ended and took DD to the ER and they said rear facing is the way to go, but is less than ideal in rear end situations.

Just curious why the mirror is a problem? DD loves her mirror and I like that I can see her.

They say it can be used as a projectile if *God forbid* you are in an accident and can cause serious injury. Same for anything you have in the car really like your purse or packages. I try to keep my purse on the floor when in the car. I know people who put their purse on the floor in the backseat too, and sometimes the trunk just to avoid the potential projectile.

Re: Switching to foward facing

I had a similar issue. We got a new truck and a new car seat and we just needed to install it quick to drive a short ride homeAfter taking delivery of the truck. The car seat was complicated so DH just installed it FF for that ride and then was supposed to turn it around. Well DS was not having it. He wants to sit FF. He's only 15 months. I'm not 100% comfortable with it but I turned DS1 at 13 months and I justify it in my head by saying the truck is super safe, the car seat is super safe and I found the screaming extremely distracting.

Her seat in my car and my dads car is the same. Britax Marathon. Driving her home yesterday was fine bc DD1 was there to distract her. I'm going to try to hold out for as long as I can.
