Re: Tips for running

Try doing run and walk intervals like this one:

To Start Out

Time: 30 minutes* including warm-up and cool-down
Calories burned: Approximately 170 per workout**

First 10 minutes: Warm up with gentle walking that gradually gets brisker.

Next 16 minutes: Break into a gentle jog that feels somewhat challenging for one minute. Recover for three minutes with moderately paced walking; by the end of the three minutes you should have the energy to jog again. Repeat sequence three more times.

Last four minutes: Walk at an easy pace to cool down.

Challenge yourself: Gradually ramp up your walking pace so it gets brisker toward the end of your three-minute recovery interval.

Tips for running

I started in June. If you really want to do it and continue I say sign up for a race so you have a goal. I registered for a Half Marathon so I knew I had a goal.

The first day I went out it was just to get started. I ran/walked for 2.5 miles. But when I would walk it would be for a few houses. I always made sure I made myself run again. its so easy to just say F it and go home. I picked a route that wouldn't allow me to jsut turn around.

Since June I have been able to get myself to just over 8 miles on my long runs by adding mileage each week. When I started I was lunch if I could run to my fridge. it becomes addicting. I always finished and was excited to see how far I could get next time.

I run 3-4 x a week. My short runs are 3-4 mile and then a long one on the weekend. You slowly build endurance and strength.

Let me know if you have any questions. I didn;t follow any program but did take advice from 3 marathon runners. I have my first 10K on Sunday so we will see if it had worked

Re: Tips for running

Absolutely start with a run/walk interval program. C25K is a GREAT one to start with.

Re: Tips for running

C25k didn't work for me
But like PP said, intervals did

I started with literally 20 secs of running at first. Walk fast for 3 minutes , run, walk fast, run

Now I'm at 90 seconds of running and I only walk for another 90 seconds and go back and forth

I have asthma so it's a little different for me. Physically, I feel I can do more, but my lungs hate it lol

And most recently, I hurt my knee and the ortho put running on hold until MRI comes back boooooooo

But I have to say, it feels really good seeing yourself get stronger and stronger
Don't get dicouraged and just try your best everytime you go out

Tips for running

And I suggest running outside. So much better than a treadmill. Too easy to quit on a treadmill.

Re: Tips for running

I have done C25k twice lol worked both times. I stopped running when pregnant and had to do another round after the baby came. Now I can jump in and out of running as long as I go for a good run every few months.
Just remember you are not trying to run your fastest each time. Just focus on running the full time each section.

Tips for running

I started running with intervals too, I think I started with like 2 min running, 3 min walking for like 6 times through, then worked up to 8 times, then 12, then increased to 3 running, 2 walking, then 4/1, then 5/1. I stayed at 5/1 intervals for a LOOOONG time and ran my first 10K that way. Then after a 10k, I signed up for a half and worked up to 10/1 intervals. Now I just do what feels comfortable on the day I'm running.

They're not as popular on LI, but here in Tucson, there are a ton of running/training groups, so I always found that running with a group is helpful. Even if I'm not running "with" people, it's good to have accountability that you're meeting a group of people at 5am (it's summer in the desert, we run at crazy hours). Maybe you could search around on he interwebs for groups near you!

Also look into Jeff Galloway for beginners. He's huge with intervals.

I used c25k and the forum running ahead. So much support there!!!

I'll be honest, I put so much pressure on myself about taking walk breaks and was hard on myself that it took the fun out.
Is like to stay up again but this time use an interval method in a positive way. I get side stitches. ALWAYS have and probably always will. Have to accept that an interval method might be the best for me. Basically, I'm just saying that intervals and walk breaks are ok. You're still running!
