Recommendations for Pediatrician

I'm about to go in my 7 month and I wanted to start looking for a pediatrician. I am giving birth at Winthrop. My friend was telling me it's a good idea to have the pediatrician come and see the baby once they are born.. I am looking for one preferably in the Nassau county area

1. Please recommend your pediatrician and where he's located

2. Tell me something you really like about them or don't like about them pros/cons.. ( response time, waiting room time, etc)

3. Do they do consultations?

Thanks in advance I greatly appreciate it :)

Re: Recommendations for Pediatrician

It's NOT really important to choose a pediatrician who is affiliated with the hospital you're delivering at. That's 2 or 3 days of quick visits, tops.

It IS very important to choose a pediatrician who is convenient to your house, who has good hours (late nights, weekends, etc), can squeeze you in for an emergency or sick visits last minute, who will return your phone calls, etc, etc, etc. This is a dr (or practice) you will be with for 18 years, not a few days.

What town? You might prefer someone local to you and affilated with Winthrop. Although at the hospital the baby will be seen by whomever is on call at the time at Winthrop or you can have someone you choose see them and choose someone else for primary care (if not affiliated with Winthrop).

Re: Recommendations for Pediatrician

I go to Beach Pediatrics in Oceanside. 5 doctors in the practice and I like them all a lot. The practice is great, all the support staff are lovely, our wait times are minimal and they have a doctor on call (and a doctor answering the on call line, not a service) 24/7.

I go to Prokids in Levittown on Wantagh Ave. They are a multi doctor practice so getting appointments is never a problem. They have weekend hours and are open until 8pm which is very important as a working mom.

I agree it is important to find a practice convenient to your home because you will probably be there a lot the first year. Especially in the winter time, you will not want to be driving far in bad weather every time your child is sick.

Re: Recommendations for Pediatrician

Dr. Grillo in Levittown. He's a one man practice so you ALWAYS see him. His on call staff is great, he delivers at Winthrop and will make most likely 2 visits before you leave the hospital. With my older DD, she was in the NICU for 6 weeks so she was cared for by NICU staff, but we got her an appointment with him the day after she came home. With my younger DD, he came to see her twice within the 3 days from when she was born to when we went home. I've been so happy with him and his team.
