au pair/live in

So it looks like we are going to need to have an au pair/live in when we move to LI due to my and DH's work schedules.

I just registered with Cultural Care based on our friends (very positive) experience with them, but I'm looking for positive and negative feedback with that agency specifically or any other au pair agencies, as we would be willing to consider other agencies if they more meet our needs.

My dd is currently in full-time day care which I love, but unfortunately no day cares I have found that are close are open for the hours we need. I'm so scared that we are going to end up with a young girl who really doesn't have any child care experience and will end up being more of a headache then help.

Also, if you or anyone you know has a live-in that is not an au pair, how did they find them?

No recs but dd is starting daycare next month and DH and I have to either work from home or leave early every day to get her. It's ridiculous, there is obviously a clear need for daycares with later hours. One daycare in particular we looked at (website said it was ideal for working parents) closed at 5:30. I actually asked if they were joking and laughed at them.

Plenty of people on LI work in the city. I see them push and shove their way onto the LIRR everyday. Someone's gotta be watching their kids!

I'm curious to know what you've found in regards to au pairs working more than 45 hours/week? In the minimal research I've done, I thought the work week for the au pair had to be limited to 45 hours. I think there may come a time when we also would consider a live-in because of schedules, but I don't see how we could make that work with commutes to/from the city and long days for the working parents.

PP is right. Au pairs still have limited hours they can work by law. If you need really long hours you're probably better just hiring a nanny who is willing to work overtime. Otherwise, you're faced with employement issues.

Out of curiosity to the OP, what hours do you need? Could you and your husband work flex-time to make a daycare work? My husband does drop off and I go to work early so that I can leave to get my kids before day care closes.

Yeah I wish there was a better solution because I would certainly prefer for her to remain in daycare in a setting she knows, but I feel that at least with an au pair/live in they could be doing things during the day that I'm constantly rushing and stressing about, i.e. DD's laundry, cooking, letting the dog out, etc.

With respect to the hours, we are actually going to enroll DD in a 2's program 3 mornings a week in order to have enough child care hours during the week and hopefully some extra hours here and there if we want to go out on a Saturday night. In the end, even with the cost of an au pair and a separate program we are saving a huge amount compared to what our DD's daycare costs in the city, but that's a whole other thread!

We would be willing to look into a nanny as well, but would honestly prefer someone who lives in because my DH has very late hours and does travel at times for business.
My schedule is more flexible, but we ideally need someone from 8-6:30/7:00 which is why we are looking into a separate program a few days a week so we can "gain" 12-15 hours more for the au pair.

My daycare is open 630-630 and I work in the city. It's completely doable.

Re: au pair/live in

We are in the same situation. Moving to Long Island this summer and our nanny does not drive so she is not coming with us. We need someone from 7am - 6:30pm and I have been disappointed with the nannies I have interviewed. We are working with Au Pair in America which has been recommended by a few friends. I am also concerned about a live-in, but we feel as if the flexibility will be very helpful this first year. My children are in school every day so we don't have to worry about the hours. Interested to hear how your search is going!! Good luck!!

Thanks for this! I'm on Care.Com and haven't been that impressed with the profiles and haven't seen any for a live-in, but I'll keep looking.

I think at this point we have made up our minds that we will try the au pair for a year and see how that goes, so if anyone else has any positive or negative reviews of Cultural Care I would love to hear them!
