DD had a cough and runny nose I can't get rid of

My 5 year old has Constant congestion and coughing. She has had 5 ear infections since November. She had pneumonia in Jan and bronchitis in Feb and has never really stopped coughing and her nose never stopped running. Sometimes the coughing gets a little better but never goes away. Right now her cough is really bad again and she is barely sleeping at night. She has seen her ped at least 10 times since Nov. She has been to pm Ped 3 times. I took her to see the ENT who put her on a nose spray but that doesn't seem to help. She has asthma so all cough supresants are out. Any one else experience something like this? What can I do to help?

Can she take any allergy meds? Sounds like she needs something to dry up the congestion.
This winter was a shit show for DD, too. She is normally very healthy but was on antibiotics once a month from Nov-Feb. Still has an occasional stuffy nose and post nasal drip. I give her benadryl at night when it's bad.

This has been the worst winter for my dd as well..bw the numerous ear infections n strep twice plus pink eye..im so done!! Anyway, my dd now has a cold n cough.. Ive been giving her probiotic in her juice to build up the good cells to try n get her immune system stronger.on top of that i do a multi-vitamin plus a chewable claritin. Im finding it does help! Definetly try that n see if there is a difference

Is she in a daily med for the asthma? We feel this has helped my DS prevent from escalating into full blown asthma issues. I do find that when we start the routine of his albuterol when cough first starts, we can limit how bad cough gets. Then we wean down. It's not ideal but it helps especially at night.

I'm also leaning toward allergies. Each time we wean down it all returns, and it is worse on days that are warm and sunny. I almost welcome the rain at this point. We are heading to an allergist next week.

Did you put a humidifier in her room? That helps my son a lot with his cough. Also the Vicks vapor plug-in.

She sounds exactly like my DS who is 7. The final thing that has actually been helping? Honey. I had to take him to the ER one night and they said he had bronchitis and gave him a bunch of scripts but my ped didn't want me giving him a cough syrup, and told me to do honey. It's been such a bad winter for us, my 2 year old is having non stop sinus infections as well, it sucks and I hope your DD feels better soon!

She isn't on a daily asthma medication. We use alubuterol and plumicort when she starts wheezing. I'm thinking of having her tested for allergies. She is in a huge kindergarten class. With 27 kids in her class she doesn't stand a chance. This morning her nose is running thick and green so it looks like we're back to the doctor again.

I'm actually not sure If there's a chance my DS developed allergies this fall/winter just for the amount of times he has been sick from oct-now. But from what the doctor said the honey coats the throat and helps the cough. He wasn't getting sleep from coughing fits (colds and bronchitis) and the first night we did honey he slept the entire night without coughing. I do plan on taking him to an allergist to see if that was the root cause or not.

Re: DD had a cough and runny nose I can't get rid of

Did your doctor suggest a nebulizer for the cough? My daughter is recuperating from pneumonia and she was placed on a nebulizer every 4 hours for the wheezing and coughing, along with an antibiotic for 5 days, a steroid for 5 days and brofmed (prescription cough syrup) to help dry up the mucus. It took nearly 2 weeks and she's starting to act like her old self again. She's the same age as your DD.

DD had a cough and runny nose I can't get rid of

I would recommend seeing an allergist. My son constantly had a runny nose and I thought it was colds or viruses from daycare. We wound up seeing an allergist for food allergies and it turns out he's allergic to dust and a bunch of other things. He's now on daily allergy medicine and doing so much better.

I love the honey elixir to relieve the post nasal drip cough irritation
I use allergy meds to help dry her up.
And I agree with the others, I'd see another ENT. That's an awful lot of ear infections and sounds like allergies to boot.

If not an ENT then see an allergist.
