20/20 special last Friday on heroin

Did anyone see this? I don't normally watch it but had just turned on the TV and that channel was on. All I can say is WOW! I've definitely heard how bad the heroin problem is but to see how it effected those peoples lives was really eye opening (and sad!) I had no idea that New Hampshire was so bad and never thought about people who want to get better but can't get into a rehab facility because they're full.

I completely forgot I DVR'd this! Going to watch it at 9. Thanks for the reminder.

As for rehab. It's terrible how many people get turned away. Including for alcohol.

I lost all faith in the system after seeing what someone I know had to go through. And continuously got turned away. Even with a court order.

Disgusted!

Re: 20/20 special last Friday on heroin

I started to watch it on my DVR so sad. My parents have friends who have custody of their grandchildren because their daughter is an addict. Its heartbreaking for them because they never know what is going to happen to her. She comes around to see the kids and they don't know whether she is using or not. I felt so bad for all the families and that one man who went into rehab in the beginning.

I watched it. It's incredibly sad that people who want help can't get it. The problem is so bad everywhere. I know of several people (friends of friends of friends ) who have lost loved ones to this horrible addiction and one person who battled it for years and finally overcame the addiction (although there is always a fear of him being sucked back in)

I didn't watch it but Herion is a problem every where especially here on Long Island. I lost my brother to it about 4 years ago. Since then I know a lot of people who lost friends and family to it and it seems to just get worse.

Hopefully people will start to realize that this is happening right in thier backyards. Not sure what the solution is but it's really sad how many lives are lost to it.

If 80% of the people start out addicted to pain killers I think that the first step is to really regulate narcotic pain killers, or potentially eliminate them. It just seems like no matter how much pain you are in, it would better than risking the addiction factor. Clearly I am oversimplifying this problem but just seems like the obvious answer.

Yup. I think a new law starting soon is that all scripts will be electronic to eliminate fraud like this.

I agree.

Seems like a logical start.

Re: 20/20 special last Friday on heroin

I've never understood the appeal that has lead to this epidemic. What attracts people to even start using it? It's well know that it's insanely addictive... what is so appealing about that?

I know some start out by abusing pain pills but most of the people I know that are addicted, started out by sniffing it in high school.

I know a lot of people that have OD'd. Some were lucky, the others are no longer with us. The ones that get clean only seem to last a few years until they relapse. I've never seen a real success story. It's always temporary. Getting people to just never try it seems like the only long term solution.

DH's cousin is an EMT (she's seen her fair share of OD's). She's told me that when it's all said and done, a lot of parents refuse to talk about what caused their kids death. If anyone asks what happened, a lot of parents lie and say things like an undiagnosed heart problem, etc. They just can't take the embarrassment.
Maybe if they start talking about it, kids will stop trying it.

Just watched this online and I am in tears. It is just so awful. The fact that first you cannot get treatment and then if you do, you cant get the right meds. Ugh. Those poor kids! I wonder if the dad in jail ends up staying clean.

He actually seemed like he was going in the right direction. The fact that his wife still needed the anti withdrawal meds for so long was a red flag to me. It just seemed like there was no way she was going to make it.

I really hope for the sake of their baby that at least the dad stayed clean.

They said 80% start out with pain killers so although that's not your experience, I do believe that's the reality. And I think that it starts out by thinking that of course you can handle a couple of pills, and then you become dependent, that habit becomes too expensive, and heroin is cheap and will satisfy your addiction. Next thing you know you are shooting up.

I think it's less prescription based addiction, especially from young teens and more "everyone's trying it" and it goes from there. Heroin is cheaper than buying pain pills on the street, which is why it's so attractive to all. This I've learned from a good friend who has/had a problem (recovery).

The best answer to this I think is #1. education. It needs to be shoved down the throats of kids starting real young. We've discussed the D.A.R.E. Program from my childhood in other posts and I truly feel it made a difference. Parents need to be educated too. That brings me to # 2. Parenting. Now, I'm not saying all drug abusers had crappy parenting bc I know that is not true. But I do tend to see the "not my kid" parent a lot! A big lesson to teach children is to be a leader and not a follower. Holds true in every aspect. Your dreams, your style, respect for yourself, etc. and especially when it comes to drug use. Just bc your kid is an honor student in 4 different after school actives, doesn't mean he/she is a immune to this epidemic. Talk to them!! Weekly. Daily if you have too. You'll get the eye roll, etc. but it'll be worth it and they will eventually love you for saving them from the life so many are living.

Back on prescriptions ... There are people in chronic pain. These people need that medication to function. I am sometimes one of them. I have chronic kidney stones. And days where even 2 of the heaviest pills I'm prescribed does nothing more then a Tylenol would do and I have to go to ER for pain management to get it under control. The stricter the laws , the harder is it for actual sufferers to get the treatment they need. Yes, track the Drs abusing their privilege and selling to dealers - 1,0000000%. But as it is now, it's harder and harder for people who NEED narcotics to get them bc the laws are being made across the board. Instead of weeding out the bad apples, they are just penalizing all Drs. which in turn is causing people to buy from the streets and the from there they switch from the $10 Percocet pill to the $10 bag of heroin that lasts a longer and relieves the most pain

Vicious vicious cycle.

Education is #1 and it's not just for law enforcement or the schools. Education needs to come from the parents as well.

Re: 20/20 special last Friday on heroin

its a huge problem where i live in Bucks County PA. mainly b/c the I-95 corridor is a huge traffic route of drugs.

i had a coworker a few years ago whose 22 yr old daughter OD's on xmas eve and died. Left behind a little girl that she now takes care of.

lots of kids start b/c their parents have pain pills and kids get hooked on that fast and then move on to heroin pretty quickly.

People who are drawn to trying drugs, and who in turn develop deadly addictions, usually do so in order to fill some sort of void. It doesn't matter how they look on the outside, they are looking to fulfill or numb something on the inside. Depression, undiagnosed mental illness, family history...all of those things play a part. I think in younger kids and teens, it's a way to fit in, be part of the "cool crowd." There's just no blanket definition of who or why, I think it's all incredibly enmeshed in the individual.

probably friends but my brother always had drug issues. he probably tried most drugs I know at one point he was very big on special k. he was in and out of rehab a lot. when he got he always went back to smoking weed and then when that wasn't good enough he would end back to some hard core drugs.

right before he died though he got injured on the job and lost his eye ... there is no guarantee he wasn't using drugs before that but the assumption is the pain from the eye loss made him get back to it heavily and he accidently over dosed.

some notes I don't think weed in anyway was a gateway drug for my brother. I still strongly believe he was at fault for being an addict like previously stated he was in rehab plenty of times he had all the support he needed and yet he still went right back to getting in trouble. he had a kid and didn't still didn't force him to grow up. right before he died he had another son that was not even a year old and who was there when he died. we fought a lot about his lack of ability to grow up and take responsibility and I am still not over it. after all this you think I would try to understand and be more tolerable to addicts but I am not. I believe if you really want to get clean you will do it and I know lots will disagree with this.

Re: 20/20 special last Friday on heroin

I didn't see the special but having buried a cousin and a brother in law due to heroin overdoes and burying a father from alcoholism related death I can say that there needs to be a serious upheaval of the way we deal with addicts and addiction in this country. I watched rehabs turn them away due to lack of space telling them to come back next week. I have seen the sympathy drain from someone's face once I tell them the cause of their deaths. There is a huge stigma that goes along with addiction. Not all addicts are lowlifes. Some go to work everyday, come from good homes, towns and families. And yes, both my cousin and brother in law started with prescription pills. The pills and prescriptions run out and they are forced to buy them on the street, which is pricey. The heroin is cheap.

i caught this movie on lifetime last year and it totally changed my thinking of heroin addicts.

http://www.mylifetime.com/movies/perfect-high

it is sooo easily addictive and can basically happen to anyone. the only lesson i, as a parent, could take away from it was to be as present as possible. in this situation, the kid was a good student and involved in sports, so the mom assumed she was doing the right thing.
so so scary.
i made my DH watch this movie too

Agree on both the education & parenting points. But it was so sad to me to see that EMT on the show teaching 11/12 year olds how to give Narcan. 11 & 12 year olds! They just seemed so young to be learning about this!

Re: 20/20 special last Friday on heroin

I was doing my clinical rounds in the ED this past weekend and let me tell you...4 heroin overdoses arrived within 3 hours of one another. I live in anne Arundel county in MD, the problem is terrible here. It's actually pretty bad in lots of areas that are affluent believe it or not. Heroin is an awful thing and it is killing people. It is heartbreaking, especially seeing younger kids on it. And the outcome was all the same...get narcan, get a meal, then they're itching to get out the door to get their next fix. Just the way it is. something has to change.

On a personal note, I have a sibling w an opiate addiction. If he doesn't get help soon, heroin will be next even though he swears he wouldn't do it. But that's how they all started. Heroin in cheaper and quicker than pills. It makes me sick to think of.

Re: 20/20 special last Friday on heroin

My uncle is a Heroin addict. He is only a few years older than me. It started out with a pain pill addiction, then he turned to Heroin. This has been going on almost 8 years. In and out of programs. He had a son at one point but he gave up his rights after the mother begged him. He actually chose to give up his rights instead of going to jail because of child support. Of course now he regrets that he did that because now he will never see him again. Then He winds up having another child. This time the girl who he is with helps My uncle get clean. He goes away for 90 days. He came back a new person!! Best he had looked in years. Well after getting a really good job and his 1st paycheck he winds up overdosing on the job. His boss found him in the bathroom and Narcan saved his life. 130 days clean and then right back to it!! Uncle went back to detox at St. Charles after a week of being there, the insurance kicks him out. Not long enough, back to getting high. I cant take it anymore!! My grandmother refuses to throw him out of her house. My heart breaks that he had 2 children. One we will never see again because of him. The other little girl still sees him but supervised by the mom of course. I still say he hasn't hit rock bottom because of my grandmother, and one sister who gives him a $20 here and there. Always waiting to hear the phone ring expecting to hear that he died. Herion SUCKS!
