Virus - Fever only

Son (almost 11) has a virus with just fever (I hate this one!) and slight tickle cough. 5th day now of 102-104, barely going below 101 with fever reducers. Dr said it should last 3-7 days.

For those that recently had it - did it disappear (like high one day and then back to normal another) or did you find it gradually getting lower and lower? He tends to get this one once a year and in the past it was always 4 days (2 days high, one day low and 1 day low grade). Never had it this long or this high for so long.

Edited to add - he was strep and flu tested and as of Tuesday his lungs, throat, ears, etc. were perfectly clear.

Just curious how others kicked it - quick or gradual? feel so bad that he's so miserable and now he's getting impatient ...

Was he checked for pneumonia? My daughter had this at Halloween. High fevers starting Wednesday. No other symptoms, just a fever running 103.5-104. She said she felt completely fine. On Saturday she was clearing her throat, same on Sunday. Monday she still had a fever. Brought her to the ped where she told him she felt fine. She coughed once and he was like oh that is nothing. Turned out she had lower lobes rales. She had pneumonia. The fever went away by day two of antibiotics, but she has developed a cough which has yet to go away.

DS1 (6) had this a few weeks ago. High fever (103ish) for 6 days straight. 7th day it was down to 100, then gone.
Cough developed on day 4. He also tested + for strep, but I think that was a fluke, as the fever remained after antibiotics.
DS2 (3) has it now. We are on day 5. Days 1-3 were high fever (103 with one 104 night). Day 4 it only went to 101. I am hopeful for no fever today. Cough developed on day 2.
He tested neg for strep.
Doc only said virus, and that they are seeing it a LOT with the fever 6-7 days. From what I have seen, I think this is an adenovirus.
I am sorry your DS is sick- this is a really weird one for us, as the kids are basically fine- a little loss of appetite, and the cough, but other than that, playing normally. They did respond to Tylenol and Advil though, so that helped.
I hope he feels better soon!

Yikes - both got it...You poor kids and you poor mommy! That's tough. Two weeks of sick!

I have fingers crossed my other two stay clear! I have had the sick son quarantined since he started running fever.

My kids just had something similar
Ds was sick from Thursday to wed with a fever but he also vomited twice, had a rash, and a cough tested negative for flu and strep
Dd had a fever (104-105) from sat to tues wed it went down to 100 only complaints were a headache and stomach ache wed she started coughing
Praying my 3rd doesn't get it

My DD had a virus last year that lasted EIGHT days. All she had was high fevers, (102-103 barely getting below 101 with meds) and no other symptoms. She was tested for flu and strep twice, always negative. It was just a virus that had to run its course. On the 9th day her fevers just broke and she was done. But it was a very loooong 8 days and she was miserable.
