Splits - or Master on Top Floor?

We have a split and are thinking of adding upper level master suite in a few years - but I'm just wondering about being up there (it will only be 3-5 steps up - but still) while the kids are below. Thoughts? Likes/Dislikes?

Splits - or Master on Top Floor?

We have another bedroom a couple stairs up. It will be my DDs room in a couple of months since baby 2 is on the way and will be taking her smaller bedroom. We originally had 4 bedrooms including that addition, but when we moved in we combined the master and a smaller bedroom to make one big master, so we have 3 good sized bedrooms now. The smallest is my DDs current bedroom.

I don't have any personal experience with this just yet as we have been in our split for only a year. A few houses around us have done this type of addition. It's something we talk about doing but many years from now. I think it's a great idea!

I wouldn't mind being a few steps up from my kids in my split. The only thing I would mind is having the house spread across 5 floors, basically. 4 floors is a lot already. That being said, many people do it and love it. But with 2 small kids, I already feel like I'm running up and down all day, and it's just another set of stairs to baby proof. Maybe I wouldn't mind as much when they were older.

I would love this option if we could afford it. A few houses in my area have this. It's only a few steps up and I wouldn't be worried because my kids wouldn't be on the ground floor.

ETA If I ever came into money and did this, I would try to incorporate a washer/dryer somehow on the floor w/ the 3 bedrooms so this way I wouldn't be going all the way down to the basement where my washer/dryer was, to do laundry.

I agree! A house near us did this and we've talked about doing the same thing and then just use the old laundry room as storage or something else.

We have a split and just added another level. We made a master suite with walk-in closet and bathroom. Plus we added a second bedroom (for 9 year-old) and a laundry room.
We now have plenty of room and love it.
My son is on the top level with us, and DD and DS#2 are one level down (about 6 steps). It is working great so far!

We've talked about it. We're waiting because 1) it's a lot of money and 2) my kids are little and I like being on the same floor. But there are a lot of houses in my neighborhood that have done it and it looks great!

We moved into a split with a Master on the top floor and I love it! At first I was scared having my DD on the next level (5 steps away), but it's totally fine. I have my baby monitor, it's great to have our own level and we have an alarm system which makes me feel better. Our bedroom is also bigger then the other bedrooms on the floor below us.
