Can anyone tell me the good, the bad and the ugly? Seriously considering relocating and I came across Waxhaw outside of Charlotte as having great schools. Would want to be close to a city and airport. Any info is appreciated!

I have family in Charlotte and am possibly considering a move also. They told me to look in Waxhaw, Weddington, Marvin, Huntersville, and Ballantyne. I really had no idea how much the homes have increased there! I just posted about this a few days ago, if you want to look up that post!

We are also considering Raleigh as well, but it's hard because we don't know anyone who lives there who can advise. Cary or Apex area based on research!

Re: Charlotte, NC

I know a little about waxhaw. My friend recently moved there with her daughter. Its pretty rural. The other issue she is having is the schools are over crowded her dd is in 5th grade and her classroom is in a trailer and her class had 30 kids in it. But she does love it there and cost of living is much cheaper than L.I. She is finding it much easier as a single parent to swing everything and sounds so much happier.

I lived in Ballantyne for 2 yrs and bought and lived in waxhaw for 3.

Total dream.
If you can swing the $$$, stay in Ballantyne. Dh job was closer to waxhaw, so it worked for us.

Look up hawk ridge public school in Charlotte, it is excellent.
The wax haw schools are going through an overcrowded stage right now.

Yes, Waxhaw is very rural. May I ask why you prefer Ballantyne? Sorry, don't want to hijack the post, but hopefully the original poster can gather so info from my question! Appreciate it! Thanks

Good luck to the OP! It's such a tough decision!!!!

Waxhaw is very nice, quaint, has a Main Street, historic train bridge, better home prices.
But everything for us was a 20 minute drive to Ballantyne.
It was just way more convient to live in Ballanty e. Much different.
But ymca, church, trader joes, nice big library, most restaurants...you have to do that boring 20 min drive

Re: Charlotte, NC

thank you all so much for the responses. we are in the very preliminary stages so i appreciate all the info. are there better parts of each of these areas (ballantyne and waxhaw)? i see huge ranges in prices (some beautiful homes in waxhaw for 225K all the way up to 700k).

Really just depends on waxhaw community.
Nothing "bad" but people avoid waxhaw elem because the other schools are great.
No bad parts of Ballantyne.

I live in Waxhaw. We moved a year ago and love it. There is a more rural part of Waxhaw, but not all of it. If you are looking at Union County I would stay in the Weddington and Cuthbertson school clusters. Marvin Ridge has great schools, but overall, it was not the vibe I would want (a lot of pressure to keep up with the Jones') All of it is a great area to raise a family.

I also know of people who moved to Fort Mill, SC which is I believe 20 minutes south of Charlotte. Those schools are supposed to be great as well.

we lived in charlotte from June of 2004 - November 2014, just moved right north of charlotte to Concord in early December. Cabarrus county schools are MUCH better, IMHO (unless you are in one of the super swanky areas of charlotte) than Mecklenburg county (charlotte) schools. We are happy with it down here in NC and our new neighborhood is awesome, tons of kids, safe, etc
